Roomdraw Information for Spring 2008

Each spring we have a room draw in order to place returning students in rooms prior to placing incoming first-year students.

1. Housing Preference Form - due by April 7 (changed from March 31)

After Spring Break all current residents of the residence halls must complete the Housing Preference form. This form indicates your housing plans for the next school year.

Even if you are leaving Calvin you MUST complete this form.

4. Looking for a Roommate?

If you would like help finding a good match, pick up a Roommate Finder card from the Housing Office and return it by Monday, March 31.

Stop in the Housing Office to read through others' forms and find a compatible roommate between Tuesday, April 1 and Friday, April 11.

Single rooms are not generally available. If you can not find a specific roommate, your R.D. may need to work individually with you to establish your priority order and room placement.

5. What about Sophomores in KE next year?

Current first year students interested in living in the KE apartments next year (as sophomores) may sign up as part of a KE group. However, groups may not have more than 2 sophomores, in order to preserve space for junior and senior residents.

Students who cancel their plans after the KE room draw will be charged a $200 discontinuation fee. Full-time students who remain at Calvin may not break a housing contract unless given premission by the Residence Life Office or KE Area Coordinator. If permission is not granted, the student will continue being charged for the duration of the contract. If persmission is granted, students will be charged a $200 fee for breaking the contract. Permission will only be given for extenuating circumstances.

How we prioritize requests

The Room Draw process is designed to give preference to students who wish to return to their current residence hall, and even to their current floor. In addition, there will be a limited number of spaces in each hall for students who want to move from one building to another, depending on demand and the college's policy of balancing numbers of new and returning students in buildings and on floors. The order of priority for rooms, floors, and buildings is determined as listed:

1. Current residents of a room who remain as roommates have first priority to that room.

2. Current residents of the same floor (different rooms) who become roommates for next fall will have second priority to open rooms on that floor.

3. Current residents of the same building (on different floors) who become roommates for next fall will have third priority to specific rooms on either of their two floors where they currently live.

4. Current residents of the same floor who become roommates but want to move to a different floor will have fourth priority to open rooms on the other floors, behind current residents on that floor.

5. A resident of one building who wishes to room with someone from a different hall will have fifth priority to open rooms in either of their two floors. Other floors in either of their buildings may be necessary.

6. Students wishing to room with a specific transfer student or incoming first-year student in the current student’s building will have sixth priority to their current floor. Other floors in the building may be necessary, or other buildings altogether. See RD for special circumstances.

7. Two residents who become roommates and wish to move to an entirely different building will have last priority to open rooms in that building (if any are available). These students take part in the "All-Hall Room Draw" as outlined above.

*** Students will always have the opportunity to return to the same building next year depending on roommate choice and as long as they follow the process outlined. Students who want to guarantee that they will be able to return to their current building should select a roommate from their current building. Students who want to guarantee that they will be able to return to their current floor should select a roommate from their current floor.
