Opt out of Calvin's health insurance
Calvin College uses a "hard waiver" system for KnightCare insurance. All students will be enrolled in the college-sponsored student health insurance plan (KnightCare) automatically unless they show proof of comparable existing insurance and submit a signed waiver.
Requirements to opt out of KnightCare
To meet Calvin College's insurance requirements, private health insurance must meet the following conditions:
- Provides coverage for medically necessary care in the greater Grand Rapids area and anywhere in the United States.
- Provides coverage for the entire academic year.
- Provides coverage for at least $50,000 per year.
- Covers both outpatient treatment and hospitalization for mental health problems.
- Covers both medically necessary outpatient treatment and hospitalization for medical and surgical services.
- Plan is not a travel plan or an "emergency only" plan.
If you do not know if your current health insurance plan meets these requirements, contact your plan administrator to get accurate information before submitting a waiver form.
Annual verification of insurance
Every year in the spring, each student currently enrolled at Calvin College must submit information about their current health insurance coverage.
This is your chance to enroll in or waive out of Calvin's student health insurance plan (KnightCare) for the next school year. If you choose to waive out of the plan, you must be prepared to answer questions about your current health insurance coverage.
An insurance waiver with current information must be submitted by March 15, or a registration hold will be placed on your account.
