Calvin Insurance Requirements
Calvin College is concerned with the health and well-being of all students. For this reason, Calvin College requires all undergraduate students taking more than 6 credit hours to have health insurance.

Calvin College uses a "hard waiver" system. All students will be enrolled in the college-sponsored student health insurance plan (KnightCare) automatically unless they show proof of comparable existing insurance and submit a signed waiver.

Please note that a student enrolled at Calvin College must enroll in or waive out of KnightCare every year.

To meet Calvin College's insurance requirements, private health insurance must meet the following conditions:

  • Provides coverage for medically necessary care in the greater Grand Rapids area and anywhere in the United States.
  • Provides coverage for the entire academic year.
  • Provides coverage for at least $50,000 per year.
  • Covers both outpatient treatment and hospitalization for mental health problems.
  • Covers both medically necessary outpatient treatment and hospitalization for medical and surgical services.
  • Plan is not a travel plan or an "emergency only" plan.

If you do not know if your current health insurance plan meets these requirements, contact your plan administrator to get accurate information before submitting a waiver form.

Canadian Students
While we recognize that Canadian students have provincially-subsidized health care administered by their own government, the college feels strongly that the Canadian provincial plans offer only limited coverage for health care received in the United States. We therefore require Canadian students to carry supplemental insurance in order to waive out of enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

Please visit our Canadian Student Insurance page for more information about Calvin College's student insurance plan.

International Students
Health care costs in the United States can be very expensive. That is why the college sponsors its own affordable student health insurance plan. This plan is designed to help pay the high costs of hospital, surgical, and other medical expenses while studying in the United States. All international students are required to enroll in KnightCare in order to meet the college's minimum insurance standard.

Please visit our International Student Insurance page for more information about Calvin College's insurance requirements for International students.

Annual Verification of Insurance
Every year during the months of March and April, each student must submit information about their current health insurance coverage. Students are asked to submit this information through their KnightVision account: http://kv.calvin.edu/go/knightcare .

This is your chance to enroll in or waive out of Calvin's student health insurance plan for the next school year. If you choose to waive out of the plan, you must be prepared to answer questions about your current health insurance coverage.

An insurance waiver with current information must be submitted by April 15, or your account will be billed for KnightCare in May.
