How am I billed for attending Calvin? [back to top]

There are two different types of statements you will receive:

  • Tuition, Room, and Board Statement
  • Statement of Miscellaneous Charges

The Tuition, Room, and Board Statement includes charges for tuition, room, board, course-related fees, and off-campus semester charges.

The Statement of Miscellaneous Charges includes bookstore purchases, telephone service, student activity fees, parking violations, career services, Knightcare health insurance, and other non-tuition related fees. Also, all off-campus interim program charges and related credits will be posted to the Statement of Miscellaneous Charges.

Students may give permission for others to receive copies of the Tuition and/or Miscellaneous statements regularly through Calvin's e-statement subscription service. Each time a new statement is generated, a courtesy copy is then sent via e-mail to a list of subscribers designated by the student.

E-Statement copies will continue to be sent each statement period until the student removes the subscriber from the service. E-Statement subscriptions can be set up by the student in KnightVision. On the "My Resources" tab, under "Resources: Student Finances" there are four different options for obtaining a statement and account information.

Why doesn't all my financial aid appear on my tuition bill? [back to top]

Financial aid may not all show up immediately at the beginning of the semester for a number of different reasons depending on the type of aid that it is.

  • Federal Direct Loans or Federal Pell Grants are not applied to student accounts until after the 10th day of the semester. Theses loans/grants should appear as pending aid on the tuition statement, if they do not there may be something that has to be taken care of in the Financial Aid Office.
  • Scholarships from organizations outside of Calvin are applied to student accounts only after the funds are actually received. If funds are not received by the time the statement was printed, credit for the scholarships will not appear until the next statement is printed.

For questions regarding a specific scholarship, loan, or grant, contact the Financial Aid Office.

Why didn't I get a copy of my bill? [back to top]

Since the 2005-2006 academic year, no paper copies of statements are provided to students or parents. For each due date, statement notification emails are sent to each student at his or her Calvin email address. Students who do not use their calvin email address regularly can sign up to have copy of the statement emailed to them for each due date. Also, each statement will always be available online through KnightVision. On the "My Resources" tab, under "Resources: Student Finances" there are four different options for obtaining a statement and account information.

  • My Statements - View and print statement copies
  • E-Statement Subscription - Designate someone to receive regular copies of statements
  • Single Statement Copies - Send a one-time statement copy via email
  • Recent Account Activity - View activity that has occurred since the last statement was printed.

What charges are included in the balance forward? [back to top]

Your current statement shows activity from the end of the previous statement through the date the current statement was printed. Your balance forward should be equal to the ending balance on your previous statement. If you no longer have a copy of your previous statement, it can be obtained online through KnightVision.

Why was I charged for KnightCare Insurance? [back to top]

All Calvin students are required to have health insurance. There is a form that health services sends to students allowing them to opt out of the health coverage if they are covered under another plan. If this form is not completed, KnightCare is automatically charged to your miscellaneous charges account. If you believe you have been charged in error or have further questions regarding what KnightCare covers, you will need to contact Health Services (616) 526-6698

Why are my Room and Board charges incorrect? [back to top]

You may need to contact the housing office to make sure that they have you set up for the appropriate meal plan and room charge. Changes you have made to room and board that are after the date your statement was printed will be reflected on the next statement you receive.

How is the amount due calculated? [back to top]

The amount due on the Tuition, Room, and Board Statement is calculated per the following formula:

1st payment =
((Account Balance - Past Due Amount) / 3) + Past Due Amount + Late Fee

2nd payment =
((Account Balance - Past Due Amount) / 2) + Past Due Amount + Late Fee

3rd payment = Total Outstanding Account Balance

The Statement of Miscellaneous Charges balance should be paid in full each month. Accounts that are paid after the due date will be assessed a late fee.

Note to Students
It is important to understand that as the student you are responsible for coordinating payment of your account. This means it is your responsibility to:

  • File your financial aid forms prior to the start of the academic year.
  • Contact your parents about each bill if they have agreed to pay your tuition costs.
  • Contact the Financial Services Office if you are having difficulty meeting the due date.

Can I pay my tuition with a credit card? [back to top]

At this time Calvin does not accept credit cards. However, you can pay you bill online through our Electronic Check Payment Center. You can also pay your tuition with check, cash, or money order. If you or your parents wish to pay by wire transfer, contact the Financial Services Office for instructions.

Where do I send my payments? [back to top]

Please send payments with the proper remittance slip to the Financial Services Office at the following address:

Calvin College
Financial Services Office
3201 Burton St SE
Grand Rapids, MI 49546-4388

To ensure proper application of payment:

  • Include the remittance slip with each payment. The remittance slip is found at the top of each billing statement sent from the Financial Services Office.
  • Write the student ID# on the memo line of the check.
  • Mail payments at least five days prior to the due date.

In the event that a payment is received without the corresponding remittance slip, the payment will be applied against the Tuition, Room, and Board Statement first and then to the Statement of Miscellaneous Charges.

Returned Checks: [back to top]

A fee of $20.00 will be charged to the student's account for each check returned by the bank for any reason. A late payment fee may also be charged. All checks are automatically re-deposited unless prohibited by the payer's bank.

If any payments is more than 5 days late, the account will be charged a fee equal to 1% of the past due amount.

Students with past due balances will have a Financial Services Hold placed on their account. This hold prevents students from registering for future courses, charging items at the bookstore, using telephone PAC cards, checking out materials from the library, and receiving academic transcripts.
