| Students - Technology and Activity Fee |
Calvin College has restructured some former fees into a combined Technology and Activity Fee of $225 ($112.50 per semester) for all students enrolled at least half-time. This fee will appear on your Tuition, Room and Board Statement (now on KnightVision). This fee replaces the $150 per year ResNet and $45 per year Student Activity fee that was previously charged only to students living in on campus housing.
This new fee recognizes the benefits all Calvin students, whether living on or off campus, experience from the technology and student activities provided. Upon reflection it seemed somewhat unfair that while all students had access to activities and were using technology, only students who lived on campus paid the fee. Changes in the fee structure allow for further enhancements for all students in these areas. Many of the enhancements flow from the suggestions of the fifty students who participated in The Innovators event during February 2005. |

| Listed below are examples of a few of the services funded by the technology fee. |
Increase in Bandwidth and Speed
We have more than tripled the Internet bandwidth to campus, which means faster access and faster download times. |
|
New Wireless Services Available
Students will now find Internet hotspots in the following locations:
Johnny's, Hiemenga Hall Lobby, Heckman Library, Education Department Classrooms, Public Areas of all residence halls and apartments, DeVos Communication Center, Spoelhof Coffee Shop, DeVries Hall Atrium, Calvin Crossing, RVD Student Rooms and KE Courtyard Apartments.
|
Campus Owned Laptops
We have upgraded the laptops in Audio Visual's laptop loaner pool and students may check out a laptop for those special classroom presentations and academic projects. |
|
Off-Campus Program Technology
The college has also purchased additional laptop computers for student use in Off-Campus Programs such as Study in Hungary and Study in Britain. |
| |
Student Printing
Student printing in computer labs on campus grows by 20 to 25% per year. The technology fee will allow both the student and CIT to monitor individual student printing during the fall semester and give each student a generous quota for FREE black and white and color printing for spring semester. |
| |
ePortfolios
In recent years our Education majors were given the ability to create electronic portfolios within our current KnightVision system. Over the next 3 or 4 semesters every Calvin student will be given the ability to create a secure electronic portfolio online for sharing information with prospective employers, creating projects for Calvin classes or for simply sharing information about themselves to a list of carefully selected others. |
| |
Weblogs
This past year we have piloted class and student group web logs on campus. Students in programs such as the Hawaii Interim and Snow Mountain Ranch have been able to communicate all aspects of their learning experiences to everyone back home. We will be able to expand this service to more classes and groups for the 2005-06 year.

Johnny's Cafe is being renovated and by late September will be transformed into a campus gathering area for all students. Johnny's will be home to cozy couches, new carpet and lighting, a flat screen TV, an ideal area for group projects and meetings, larger food selections (a sixteen selection cereal bar and salad bar) and much more. Johnny's will feature extended hours; students can now use a Calvin ID card as a credit card. |
Continued Support for Residence Halls
The activity fee for Residence halls and KE Apartments will continue to be supported as they have in the past. The fee subsidizes events such as dorm retreats, Chaos Day, picnics, activity council ideas and more. |
|
Increased Support for Student Activities Office
The Student Activties Office will receive an increase in support to provide more concerts, films and other events sponsored by SAO to campus.
|
