How do I renew my Calvin Merit-Based Scholarship?

Calvin student studying on campusCalvin awards merit-based scholarships to new students based on a careful review of the information from the application for admission. These scholarships are renewable for students who continue to demonstrate a high level of academic achievement at Calvin.

 

The cumulative Calvin grade point average required for renewal is:

  • Calvin GPA of  3.50 for the Trustee and Presidential Scholarship
  • Calvin GPA of  3.40 for the Dean's Scholarship
  • Calvin GPA of  3.30 for the Faculty Honors Scholarship
  • Calvin GPA of  3.20 for the Honors Scholarship
  • Calvin GPA of  3.00 for the Knollcrest Scholarship
  • Calvin GPA of  2.50 for the Mosaic Award
  • Calvin GPA of  2.00 for the Multicultural Award
  • Calvin GPA of  2.00 for the Entrada Scholarship

When will I be informed of my scholarship renewal decision?

The grade point average used to determine scholarship renewal is the cumulative average at the end of the spring semester for first-year students and the cumulative average at the end of interim for all other students.  Students will be informed of their scholarship renewal status each year after their grade point average has been calculated.

For how many years is my scholarship renewable?

All Calvin Merit-Based Scholarships and Diversity Awards, excluding the National Merit Scholarship, are renewable for up to four years if the recipient maintains the cumulative Calvin grade point average required.

The Calvin National Merit Scholarship is available for a total of four years, as long as the recipient is continuously enrolled and in good academic standing at Calvin.  National Merit Scholars are considered for a fifth year scholarship based on their cumulative grade point average and the scholarship renewal levels displayed above.

What happens to my scholarship if I don’t meet the renewal criteria?

If a student's Calvin grade point average does not meet the initial renewal requirement for the scholarship originally awarded, renewal is as follows:

  • Trustee and Presidential Scholarship recipients with a cumulative Calvin grade point average between 3.40 and 3.49 will have their scholarships renewed as the Dean's Scholarship;
  • Trustee, Presidential and Dean's Scholarship recipients with a cumulative Calvin grade point average between 3.30 and 3.39 will have their scholarships renewed as the Faculty Honors Scholarship;
  • Trustee, Presidential, Dean's, and Faculty Honors Scholarship recipients with a cumulative Calvin grade point average between 3.20 and 3.29 will have their scholarships renewed as the Honors Scholarship;
  • Trustee, Presidential, Dean's, Faculty Honors and Honors Scholarship recipients with a cumulative Calvin grade point average between 3.00 and 3.19 will have their scholarships renewed as the Knollcrest Scholarship.*
  • Calvin Diversity Award recipients (Mosaic Award, Multicultural Award and Entrada Scholarship) must meet the minimum Calvin GPA requirements listed above to retain the Merit-Based award.

*Renewal at this level is only available to students admitted for the fall of 2005 or later.

Am I allowed to appeal the scholarship renewal decision?

Student and professor in the observatoryStudents may appeal the renewal decision and can request reinstatement of their original scholarship for the next year.  If there are extenuating circumstances which affected a student’s academic performance at Calvin, such as serious illness or other circumstances beyond their control, they are invited to write a letter appealing the renewal decision.

What is the scholarship renewal appeal process?

Students should address their appeal letter to the Committee on Scholarships and Financial Aid and deliver the letter to the Office of Financial Aid by July 15 for first-year students or May 15 for all other students.  In the letter, students should describe the special circumstances on which they are basing their scholarship appeal, including any supporting documentation (such as a letter from a doctor or counselor) that would help the Committee in its review of the situation.

If my scholarship is renewed at a lower level, can I regain my original scholarship?

Students will have the opportunity for their original Calvin Merit-Based Scholarship to be reinstated once they meet the original scholarship’s renewal criteria.  The grade point average at the end of interim is used to determine eligibility for reinstatement for the following year.  Please note that reinstatement is not automatic.  To request reinstatement, students must complete the Scholarship Reinstatement Request Form, available in the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid or at www.calvin.edu/admin/finaid/forms.

If my Calvin grade point average exceeds my current scholarship renewal criteria, will I receive additional scholarship consideration?

Students in the labStudents who excel academically at Calvin and exceed the renewal criteria of their current merit-based scholarship, will have the opportunity to receive additional achievement awards.  Academic Achievement Awards are awarded in multiples of $500 to students with a Knollcrest, Honors, Faculty Honors, or Dean's Scholarship and who earn a cumulative Calvin grade point average that is significantly higher than required for renewal of their scholarship.

Awards of $500 are granted to those who:

  • have a Knollcrest or Honors Scholarship and a cumulative Calvin grade point average between 3.50 and 3.64
  • have a Faculty Honors Scholarship and a cumulative Calvin grade point average between 3.65 and 3.79
  • have a Dean's Scholarship and a cumulative Calvin grade point average of 3.80 or higher

Awards of $1,000 are granted to those who:

  • have a Knollcrest or Honors Scholarship and a cumulative Calvin grade point average between 3.65 and 3.79
  • have a Faculty Honors Scholarship and a cumulative Calvin grade point average of 3.80 or higher

Awards of $1,500 are granted to those who:

  • have a Knollcrest or Honors Scholarship and a cumulative Calvin grade point average of 3.80 or higher

If I did not receive a Calvin merit-based scholarship, but my Calvin grade point average exceeds the merit-based scholarship renewal criteria, will I receive additional scholarship consideration?

Students who excel academically at Calvin and exceed the renewal criteria of the Calvin merit-based scholarships, will have the opportunity to receive additional achievement awards.  Academic Achievement Awards are awarded in multiples of $500 to returning students who do not presently have a Calvin merit-based scholarship and earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or higher.*

Awards of $500 are granted to those who:

  • do not have a Calvin Merit-Based Scholarship, but have a cumulative Calvin grade point average between 3.40 and 3.54

Awards of $1,000 are granted to those who:

  • do not have a Calvin Merit-Based Scholarship, but have a cumulative Calvin grade point average between 3.55 and 3.69

Awards of $1,500 are granted to those who:

  • do not have a Calvin Merit-Based Scholarship, but have a cumulative Calvin grade point average between 3.70 and 3.79

Awards of $2,000 are granted to those who do not have a Calvin Merit-Based Scholarship, but have a cumulative Calvin grade point average of 3.80 or higher.

*Calvin Diversity Awards must be granted at the time of first enrollment for award eligibility.
