How do I renew my Calvin Merit-Based Scholarship?
The cumulative Calvin grade point average required for renewal is:
*For information regarding National Merit Scholarship Renewal Criteria, please read the FAQ “For how many years is my scholarship renewable?”.
When will I be informed of my scholarship renewal decision? The grade point average used to determine scholarship renewal is the cumulative average at the end of the spring semester for first-year students and the cumulative average at the end of interim for all other students. Students will be informed of their scholarship renewal status each year after their grade point average has been calculated.
For how many years is my scholarship renewable? All Calvin Merit-Based Scholarships and Diversity Awards, excluding the National Merit Scholarship, are renewable for up to four years if the recipient maintains the cumulative Calvin grade point average required. The Calvin National Merit Scholarship is available for a total of four years, as long as the recipient is continuously enrolled and in good academic standing at Calvin. National Merit Scholars are considered for a fifth year scholarship based on their cumulative grade point average and the scholarship renewal levels displayed above.
What happens to my scholarship if I don’t meet the renewal criteria? If a student's Calvin grade point average does not meet the initial renewal requirement for the scholarship originally awarded, renewal is as follows:
*Renewal at this level is only available to students admitted for the fall of 2005 or later.
Am I allowed to appeal the scholarship renewal decision?
What is the scholarship renewal appeal process? Students should address their appeal letter to the Committee on Scholarships and Financial Aid and deliver the letter to the Office of Financial Aid by July 15 for first-year students or May 15 for all other students. In the letter, students should describe the special circumstances on which they are basing their scholarship appeal, including any supporting documentation (such as a letter from a doctor or counselor) that would help the Committee in its review of the situation.
If my scholarship is renewed at a lower level, can I regain my original scholarship? Students will have the opportunity for their original Calvin Merit-Based Scholarship to be reinstated once they meet the original scholarship’s renewal criteria. The grade point average at the end of interim is used to determine eligibility for reinstatement for the following year. Please note that reinstatement is not automatic. To request reinstatement, students must complete the Scholarship Reinstatement Request Form, available in the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid or at www.calvin.edu/admin/finaid/forms.
