Academic scholarships
Current students who were awarded academic scholarships at the time of their admission to Calvin may have their scholarship renewed for up to four additional years if they meet the necessary criteria.
Renewal criteria and amounts are based on the scholarship model in place at the time of the original award. To determine your renewal criteria and amounts, see the scholarship model in place at the time of your original award (in most cases this will be the year you started Calvin):
- Scholarships for students entering Calvin in 2009 and beyond »
- Scholarships for students entering Calvin in 2008 and prior years »
The Calvin GPA used to determine scholarship renewal for returning students is the cumulative average at the end of interim. Incoming students have until the end of their first year (second semester) before their cumulative GPA will be reviewed for scholarship renewal.
Changes in scholarship amounts or eligibility
Scholarship amounts may change if a student significantly exceeds or does not meet the renewal requirements for their original academic scholarship. Find out more »
Scholarship renewal, appeals and reinstatement
The Calvin GPA used to determine scholarship renewal for returning students is the cumulative average at the end of interim. Incoming students have until the end of their first year (second semester) before their cumulative GPA will be reviewed for scholarship renewal.
Students who do not meet scholarship renewal criteria may submit an appeal and request reinstatement of their original scholarship for the next year. Students are encouraged to write a letter appealing the renewal decision, outlining any extenuating circumstances which affected a student’s academic performance, such as serious illness or other circumstances beyond their control.
Appeal letters should be submitted to the Committee on Scholarships and Financial Aid (Office of Admissions and Financial Aid) by May 15 and include the following:
- describe the special circumstances on which you are basing your appeal
- include any supporting documentation (such as a letter from a doctor or counselor) that would help the committee in its review of the situation
Returning students whose scholarships were lowered due to GPA changes may have their scholarship reinstated if they now meet the original scholarship’s renewal criteria. Reinstatement is not automatic. Students may request reinstatement by submitting the scholarship reinstatement request form. The student’s grade point average at the end of interim is used to determine eligibility for reinstatement for the following year. Incoming students have until the end of their first year (second semester) before their cumulative GPA will be reviewed for scholarship renewal.
Diversity awards
Calvin diversity awards are granted at the time the student first enrolls at Calvin and are renewable for up to four years based on the criteria and mounts in place when the student first entered Calvin.

Named and departmental scholarships
To explore named and departmental scholarships, use the Scholarship Search or the Upper Class Named Scholarship link in KnightVision (under Resources). A wide range of factors are considered in each scholarship, so please review the criteria carefully. The deadline to apply for named scholarships is March 1. Departmental scholarship deadlines may vary, so check these carefully.
Renewal of named and departmental scholarships is dependent on specific criteria outlined under each scholarship via the Upper Class Named Scholarship link through KnightVision.
Off-campus interim scholarship and grants
The January off-campus interim scholarship application is due October 3. You may also apply for off-campus interim grants for January interim (due Oct. 31) or May interim (due March 6) through a separate application.
