A. Why is collaboration between colleges and community development organizations important? - “Community as Curriculum” and mission statement

B. What are some tradeoffs and challenges of collaboration between colleges and community development organizations? Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement describes challenges and lessons.

C.Examples of partnerships that benefit CDOs and the college:

1. The Calvin at Burton Heights Community Outreach Partnership Center, a HUD Office of University Partnership program; Good City photo exhibit and the annual Community Partnership Celebration

2. With churches: in particular, the Christian Reformed Church - with a group of churches for work on creeks and watersheds (authorization codes: username = pcw, password =scholres) or with a few churches - Project Neighborhood houses; youth ministry training, such as Entrenuity, and ecumenical connections for anti-racism and other social justice issues.

3. Pre-college programming called Pathways to Possibilities, a pipeline to college entry with a last step being Entrada.

4. Departmental specialty areas, such as a parish nursing course, and the Calvin Environmental Assessment Program (CEAP).

5. Centers and Institutes, such as the Service-Learning Center with StreetFest and Residence Hall Partnerships, Center for Social Research, the Institute of Christian Worship and the new center for Faith and Communication
