In order for you to effectively deter crime, you must know what the current crime trends are. Read the Campus Safety Report every week. It can also be found in the Chimes student newspaper. In addition, listen to the local news for serious crime trends in the community. If you live off campus, you can also join Neighborhood Watch. This organization will inform you of crime trends in your area.

MONDAY 10-01-2007

  • At 1:13AM a student reported that at 1:00AM he observed several subjects around a rental van in the Kalsbeek/Huizinga parking lot.  The van was checked and the windshield was found to be broken.  A check of the parking lot found one other vehicle in the area with a broken windshield.  The owner of the vehicle will be contacted to determine if this was prior damage or if it occurred in this parking lot.

  TUESDAY 10-02-2007

  • At 4:17PM staff at the Seminary reported that a student had admitted to keeping a weapon in his off campus Seminary owned apartment on Batachawana Dr. SE.  The Grand Rapids Police were contacted, and the weapon was confiscated along with illegal drugs.  The student was placed in protective custody.  Subsequently, the student was suspended from the seminary and he was issued a no-trespassing letter for both Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary property, barring him from being on campus.  
  • At 5:44PM Campus Safety observed a suspicious person in a vehicle in the parking lot north of Theta/Epsilon Residence Hall.  The subject was identified and his presence on campus verified.
  • At 7:28PM a student reported that on Sunday, 9-30-2007 her vehicle was parked in the Kalsbeek/Huizinga parking lot.  The student stated that when she went to the vehicle on today’s date she found that there was a long scratch on the lower left portion of the trunk lid of the vehicle apparently caused by someone scrapping a key along the vehicle.
  • At 10:50PM Campus Safety responded to a request for medical assistance in Beets/Veenstra Residence Hall.  A student had suffered a finger laceration.  The victim was evaluated at the scene and a friend transported the victim to Spectrum Health Blodgett for treatment.

WEDNESDAY 10-03-2007

  • At 9:15AM Campus Safety responded to a request for medical assistance in Kalsbeek/Huizinga Residence Hall.  A student had suffered a finger laceration.  The victim was evaluated at the scene and a friend agreed to transport the victim to a med center for treatment.
  • A staff member reported that at 10:13AM on Tuesday, 10-2-2007 she observed a vehicle running a stop sign on campus and almost striking a pedestrian.  The staff member had obtained the license number of the vehicle.  The owner was contacted an admitted to running stop signs on campus and failure to register his vehicle.  The information on the student involved was turned over to the Judicial Affairs Office.
  • At 5:42PM staff at Bolt/Heyns/Timmer Residence Hall reported that sometime between midnight and today’s date and 2:00PM on today’s date money was taken from the desk area in the residence hall.  

FRIDAY 10-05-2007

  • At 10:15AM Campus Safety responded to a request for medical assistance in the chapel.  A student had lost consciousness.  The victim was evaluated at the scene and declined any further treatment.
  • At 2:00PM a student reported that she believes that at 11:35AM on today’s date she left her iPod in a study carrel on the first floor of the Hekman Library.  The student stated that at 11:45AM she returned to the carrel to look for the iPod but the iPod was not found.  

SATURDAY 10-06-2007

  • At 8:55AM a student reported that sometime after 1:30AM on today’s date his bicycle was taken from the bike  rack near Beta Hall.  The student stated that his bicycle was chained to several other bicycles but the one of the other bicycle owners removed the chain to use his bicycle and left the others unlocked.

THURSDAY 10-11-2007

  • At 11:35AM a student reported that while walking in the Fine Arts Center lot he observed a vehicle backing out of a parking space and strike a vehicle in an adjacent parking space causing damage to the parked vehicle.  The witness stated the driver of the vehicle exited his vehicle, inspected the damage to the parked vehicle, and left the scene.  The vehicle causing the damage was described as a maroon, late 90’s Chevrolet Lumina.  The owner of the parked vehicle was contacted, came to the scene, and verified that the damage to his vehicle had occurred while the vehicle was parked in the Fine Arts Center parking lot.

FRIDAY 10-12-2007

  • At 11:35AM Campus Safety responded to a request for medical assistance in the Commons.  A worker had struck their head and suffered a possible neck injury.  An ambulance was requested and the victim was treated at the scene.
  • At 3:30PM a seminary student reported that in the evening of Tuesday, 10-9-2007 he observed a suspicious person in the Seminary Building.  The student stated the person appeared just to be wandering around the building and left when someone approached the subject and asked him a question.

  SATURDAY 10-13-2007

  • At 9:20AM staff at the Prince Conference and Lodging Center reported a person using the facilities that was not a registered guest.  The staff stated that the same person had been seen several times in the last weeks in and around the building.  The subject was located and identified.  The subject had no legitimate reason for being in the building and was told to leave the building and not return.

  SUNDAY 10-14-2007

  • At 11:30PM a student reported that at 10:30PM on today’s date he left his unlocked bicycle in the bike rack near Noordewier/VanderWerp Residence Hall.  The student stated that when he returned for the bicycle it was missing.  The bicycle was described as a grey Diamond 21 speed mountain bike.

MONDAY 10-15-2007

  • At 11:04AM Campus Safety responded to a request for medical assistance in Bolt/Heyns/Timmer Residence Hall.  A student had lost consciousness.  The victim was evaluated at the scene and elected to go to Health Services for further evaluation.
  • A staff member reported that at 7:00AM on Friday, 10-12-2007 he parked his unlocked vehicle in the west parking lot.  The staff member stated that he returned to his vehicle at 2:00PM on the same date and found a flash drive missing from the vehicle.

  TUESDAY 10-16-2007

  • At 1:20PM staff in the Fine Arts Center reported that at 7:30PM on Monday, October 15, 2007 an Oratorial Choir member tripped on a mat outside the south entrance to the Fine Arts Center and suffered a knee and wrist injury.  The victim had been assisted by staff at that time and had not requested any medical assistance at that time.

  THURSDAY 10-18-2007

  • At 9:30AM Campus Safety investigated an instance of tampering with a security camera.  The student involved was identified and the information turned over to the Judicial Affairs Office.
  • At 3:10PM Campus Safety investigated a report of a possible threatening message received by faculty member.  The information on the student involved was turned over to the Judicial Affairs Office.

  SATURDAY 10-20-2007

  • At 10:55AM a student in Schultze/Eldersveld Residence Hall reported that her wallet was missing from her room.  The student stated that she last remembered seeing her wallet in her residence hall room at 1:00PM on Friday, 10-19-2007.
  • At 5:02PM a student reported that at 7:00PM on Friday, 10-19-2007 he left his unlocked bicycle near the entrance to Boer/Bennink Residence Hall.  The student stated that when he returned for the bicycle on today’s date the bicycle was missing.  The bicycle was described as an older model red 10 speed.
  • At 5:26PM a student reported that at 3:00PM on Friday, 10-19-2007 he left his unlocked bicycle in the bike rack near the main entrance to the Hekman Library.  The student stated that when he returned for the bicycle at 4:30PM on today’s date the bicycle was missing.  The bicycle was described as a Blue Schwinn 18 speed mountain bike.
  • At 6:35PM Campus Safety responded to a request for medical assistance in Schultze/Eldersveld Residence Hall.  A student had suffered a possible head injury earlier in the day while playing football.  The victim was evaluated and a staff member agreed to transport the student to a med center for treatment.

SUNDAY 10-21-2007

  • At 9:57AM Campus Safety responded to a request for medical assistance at the chapel.  A person attending the Woodlawn CRC service was reported to have suffered a seizure.  An ambulance was requested and the victim transported to Spectrum Health Blodgett for treatment.
  • At 10:10PM a student in Schultze/Eldersveld Residence Hall reported receiving three harassing phone calls during the evening.  The information on the calls was turned over to the Telecommunications Department for investigation.

MONDAY 10-22-2007

  • At 7:24PM staff at the Gezon Auditorium reported that sometime between 3:00PM on Friday, 10-19-2007 and 5:00PM on today’s date a CD player was taken from the control room.

WEDNESDAY 10-24-2007

  • At 11:10AM a student reported that on the evening of Monday, 10-22-2007 she left her bicycle locked to the bike rack on the north side of the Spoelhof College Center.  The student stated that when she returned for the bicycle on today’s date the bicycle was missing.  The bicycle was described as a maroon Shasta mountain bike.
  • At 7:42PM Food Service personnel reported an odor of gasoline near a storage area in the Commons.  The area was checked and a power washer with a leaking fuel tank was removed from the area.

  SUNDAY 10-28-2007

  • At 10:23AM Campus Safety investigated a report of two bicyclists colliding on the roadway near the east end of the Crossing.  The victims were evaluated at the scene and both elected to seek their own treatment if needed.

  MONDAY 10-29-2007

  • At 4:30PM Campus Safety investigated a two vehicle accident in the Fine Arts Center parking lot.  A vehicle pulling into a parking space struck the vehicle in the adjacent space causing damage to the parked vehicle.  

WEDNESDAY 10-31-2007

  • At 4:56PM a resident at the Rho/Tau apartments stated that she observed two young male subjects take her unlocked bicycle and ride away on it going east on Burton Street.
  • At 8:20PM a resident of Theta/Epsilon reported that at 8:15PM she was studying in her room when an unknown male subject entered her room.  When the subject saw that the resident was in the room the subject ran out of the room and ran out of the building.  The suspect is a black male dressed in a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants.
  • At 10:13PM Campus Safety investigated a violation of the campus alcohol policy in Alpha Residence Hall.  The information on the student involved was turned over to the Judicial Affairs Office.
