Campus Safety • Ten Ways You Can Avoid a Ticket
  1. TicketsANY vehicle parked on campus must display a current Calvin parking permit, which will be a decal or mirror hangtag.

  2. Parking decals must be fully affixed in the lower passenger-side corner of the windshield with its own adhesive. Motorcycles must display decals on the right front fork.  Mirror hangtags must be hung on the rearview mirror with the permit information toward the windshield.
  3. If you have any vehicle for a short period of time, you must obtain a temporary parking permit.  During business hours, go to the Campus Safety desk in the Commons Annex.  After hours, call Campus Safety Dispatch at 526-6452.  Dispatch is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  4. Read the signs posted in parking areas and at the entrances of parking areas.  Be aware that some parking areas are designated for specific purposes, individuals, or times, and your permit will limit which lots you may park in.
  5. Unless you have the proper state-issued permit, NEVER park in a space reserved for the handicapped.    Since illegally parking in one of these spaces is a violation of State Law, you may receive a traffic violation from Campus Safety and/or the Grand Rapids Police Department.
  6. Any vehicle parked in posted short term parking areas must be occupied or have lights on. Four-way flashers or parking lights are acceptable.  The maximum time allowed in short term parking areas is posted on signs at the area.
  7. If your vehicle breaks down and will remain in an area where it could receive a traffic violation, you must immediately contact Campus Safety Dispatch day or night and inform them of the situation.  Campus Safety Dispatch can be reached at 526-6452.  The maximum allowable time given to rectify a vehicle problem that causes your vehicle to be parked in an improper location is three days.
  8. If you lend your vehicle to another person, you will still be held responsible for all traffic violations issued to your vehicle.  If you sell your vehicle, you should remove your Calvin parking permit.
  9. Driving on pathways is prohibited except in special cases with pre-approval from Campus Safety or a Resident Director.  The driving regulations and requirements of the Michigan Vehicle Code apply to all driving on campus.  Traffic Violations may be issued by Campus Safety to vehicles whose drivers disregard stop signs, posted speed limits or operate a vehicle in a careless or reckless manner.  All Traffic Accidents should be reported to Campus Safety.
  10. Take time to read the complete parking/driving regulations online at http://www.calvin.edu/admin/campus-safety/parking/index.htm. All persons operating vehicles are responsible for reading and adhering to these regulations.
