UPDATE 03-04-2008: SUSPECT ARRESTED

Robbery South of Burton Street

On November 28, a Calvin student was the victim of a forceful robbery (purse snatching) in the 2100 block of Raspberry Court SE, at the Emerald Creek Apartment complex.    The student was seated in her car waiting for the windows to defrost when the suspect jumped in the passenger side of the car and asked the victim, “where’s the money?”    The suspect then grabbed the victim’s laptop bag and car keys and ran away.  The incident happened at 7:25 a.m. in the parking lot of the complex.

A report on the incident was filed with the Grand Rapids Police Department.  This is the fifth reported incident of this type since November 1st according to Police Officials. 

Area of Incidents:

 The area where all these incidents have taken place is bordered by Burton Street to the north, East Beltline Avenue to the west, East Paris Avenue to the east, and Camelot Drive to the south.  Anyone who lives in or visits this area is encouraged to use caution, and be aware of their surroundings. 

Advice:

Lock car doors, and keep valuables out of sight. Do not leave items like purses, backpacks or computer bags in plain sight in vehicles.   Women should place purse straps across their shoulders.  If possible, try to walk with another person.  Only walk and park in well lit areas.  Be alert to places where people can hide and jump out and to surprise someone.  Do not attempt to confront or fight with an attacker, as they may have a weapon.  Anyone who is either a witness to or a victim of a crime should call 911 IMMEDIATELY to have the police respond.  

Suspect:

Black Male, 20 to 25 years old

Heavy Set with a rounded face

Wearing a black puffy coat, a black beanie hat, blue jeans, and a white t-shirt hanging down past the coat

Suspect Vehicle:

The suspect in this incident was seen using the credit card at a gas pump on a gas station surveillance camera.  The vehicle he was driving was a White Oldsmobile Bravada with black molding on the side of the vehicle and a roof rack as well as a sun roof.
