The Campus Safety Department coordinates all campus safety operations on campus. The Campus Safety Department consists of a director, an operations manager, a dispatch manager, five patrol supervisors, office staff, and 40 part-time student dispatchers and patrol persons.
Student patrol persons receive training in basic campus safety officer procedures, emergency medical procedures, and CPR. Campus Safety patrol persons are not armed. They conduct foot and vehicular patrols of the campus and residence hall areas 24 hours a day. In addition, an escort service is provided in the evening and night time hours.
Campus Safety patrol persons enforce all college rules and regulations. Local police are called in for any arrest relating to violations of city or state laws. The Campus Safety Department maintains a working relationship with local, county, and state police agencies.
Local and state police agencies do not as a practice inform the college of criminal activity in the vicinity of the college campus. A reasonable attempt is made to be aware of any crimes occurring in the area of the campus that would pose a threat to the college community.
Campus Safety as well as the residence life staff enforce the campus wide ban or possession and use of alcohol and illegal drugs. Possession of dangerous weapons or firearms anywhere on campus, including the residence halls, is a violation of the Student Conduct Code.
Mission Statement
We strive for a safe and well-ordered campus environment, effective communications, relevant education, and respectful service of the highest integrity.
Prayer for Campus Safety
Today, we thank you for the opportunity to continue as your servants within the Calvin College community. What a blessing to work in an open Christian environment with so many wonderful people who have no qualms about letting their faith shine through and sharing it with others.
Please continue to strengthen and support the Campus Safety staff as we strive to provide prompt service, a safe environment, and an orderly demeanor tempered with fairness and compassion. Guide and influence our Director, Bill Corner, Operations Manager Dan Gordon, Dispatch Manager Dave VanHouten, and office manager Cheryl Roels.
We ask also for the presence and support of your Spirit in the work of our supervisors and student help; some of whom work long hours, many weekends, and nightshifts. Be with our loved ones who often are without us during the holidays, family events and Sunday worship services.
Please open eyes Lord. Let others on campus realize we are fellow brothers and sisters in Christ – often imperfect, in need of your grace, facing the same challenges, and suffering from the same concerns.
And as we interact with the Calvin community: provide patience for those wanting quick results; thoughtfulness and empathy during times of disagreement.
Thank you in particular Lord for the privilege of working alongside so many wonderful young men and women who chose our Department for part-time student employment. I’m supposed to be a mentor to them, yet how many times have I been humbled at their spiritual maturity. Over and over Lord you have shown me that your kingdom will continue through these young men and women. What a blessed assurance.
Let’s together pray for the Campus Safety Division…
