10789 Preaching Life, The Taylor, Barbara 1/10/2003 People expect preachers to proclaim the gospel not only through their words, but also through their lives. So preachers get busy with good works as well as good words. But w hat strengths of character do preachers need in order to let their light shine without burning out? Barbara Brown Taylor, holder of the Harry R. Butman Chair in Religion and Philosophy at Piedmont College and an Episcopal priest whose noble simplicity has made her (according to Newsweek,) one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English language, will describe three prime virtues needed by every faithful preacher. 13499 Essential Taylor Taylor, Gardner C.
Few can preach a sermon like Gardner C. Taylor, an undisputed master of the art. No wonder that Time Magazine has dubbed him "Dean of the Nation's Black Preachers." ; Garnder Taylor's voice is on that must be heard, not only for the genius of his thinking but also for the sheer artistry of his presentation: an elegant voice that rises and falls with his message, his brilliant use of stories and metaphors, his unparal leled senbse of time and use of the "dramatic pause." The sermons and messages in Essential Taylor, taken from Judson Press's five-volume series, The Words of Garner Taylor, span five decades of Dr. Taylor's ministry. These messages will ministe r to the soul and inspire listeners to want to hear them again and again. Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research

14591 Reading Scripture with Our Foremothers Taylor, Marion 3/4/2008 Women have been thoughtful readers of scripture throughout the ages, yet the history of interpretation has not included their voices. Prof. Taylor will introduce us to the t reasures that are discovered when we seek to uncover these forgotten writings. Authors such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Christina Rossetti, Josephine Butler, Grace Aquilar and many others have much to teach us about the Bible.
Marion Taylor is Professor of Old Testament at Wycliffe College, Toronto School of Theology.

In this sessio n we will discuss the priorities for organists in such situations. We will also explore ways of accompanying the singing of small congregations and repertoire for the organist with limited preparation time. Bookstore (college) : No Restriction

14710 Anger Management, On Earth as it is in Heaven: What Christians Have Learned About Cursing Over the Years Thompson, John 4/17/2008 We live in an angry age. Yet in many churches and congregations, one of the best-kept secrets of the Bible is the presence, right there in the middle of the Psalms, of l ine after line of seething anger and vehement invective. Isn't there a bit of tension between the eager prayer in Psalm 139, that the righteous might live to see God’s vengeance and even "bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked," and the fairly straightforward command of Jesus that we should love our enemies and pray for those who do us wrong? How do we deal with angry texts in an age so filled with anger at home, on the roads, in our cities, and among nations?
Professor John L . Thompson of Fuller Theological Seminary will consider topics such as these in a lecture that draws on his recent book, "Reading the Bible with the Dead: What You Can Learn from the History of Exegesis that You Can’t Learn from Exegesis Alone. " It’s his conviction that the very hardest passages of the Bible are never better read than when we read them in dialogue with the full range of interpreters from the Christian past. Professor Thompson azlso reflects on what we can learn fro m our forebears, ranging from church fathers such as Origen through John Calvin, and how we can find practical help from history when we read texts that seem to approve outbursts that are among the worst, and most understandable, of human impulses.

14430 Stob 2: Why do you seek the living among the dead? Thompson, Marianne Meye 11/8/2007 The quest of the historical Jesus virtually by definition leaves aside that conviction which is most basic for Christians; namely, that Jesus is among the living and not amo ng the dead. The lecture suggests that an appropriate model for understanding and pursuing the quest is that of religious pilgrimage, in which the pilgrim’s convictions, shared with an historic community of faith, provide not only the motivation but also the appropriate context for pursuing this pilgrimage - which is not merely a pilgrimage to the past.

14429 Stob 1: What are you looking for? Thompson, Marianne Meye 10/7/2007 The goal of the "quest for the historical Jesus" is often phrased as the quest to discover Jesus "as he was," an enterprise which typically entails findi ng Jesus without and apart from the church and confessions about him. This "historical" pursuit of Jesus "as he was" is undertaken both by those who wish to debunk Christian confessions of Jesus and those who hold those confessions. Sc holars of all persuasions find it uncommonly difficult to adhere to this historical method, narrowly defined, and consequently the Jesus who is recovered by scholars in the interests of finding the historical figure mirrors their own sensibilities.
