10695 School Choice: Move or Improve? McGlynn, Amy; Walstra, Glen
#103 SCHOOL CHOICE: MOVE OR IMPROVE? There is no question that everyone debating over vouchers and school choice wants children to win. The tough part is figuring out which system would be more successful. If voters approve voucher Proposal 1 on November 7, will thousands of floundering students finally get a chance to excel by switching over to better schools? Or will most students stay where they are, with only the public funding switching over to better schools? Will this measure improve or devastate public schools? Let's ask a leader from each side of the debate: Amy McGlynn of the Grand Rapids Board of Education, and Glen Walstra, Executive Director of the Michigan Ass ociation of Non-Public Schools.

"An outstanding source for training or classroom practice of conflict management. Avery efective production device invites the viewer to invest personal feelings with the role-play scenarios. The video shows highlights or a workshop with real students, parents, and school staff (no actors!). Workshop demonstrations are preceded by "eye-witness" dramatic vignettes of conflict topics chosen by the audience. The conflict reenactments are believable and instructive. The closing scene regarding a tense family mediation is worth the price of admission."

15070 Science on Sunday Hoezee, Scott 1/30/2009 In most churches, preachers and worship leaders generally avoid science in their sermons and liturgies. At most, preachers may spar with science, challenging its alleged re futations of the Bible and the faith and so leaving the impression that science is the enemy of the church. In this workshop Scott Hoezee will suggest that science can be an excellent partner for preachers in celebrating the gifts and wonders of God that come to us in the handiwork of God's good creation. The workshop will explore reasons science is a partner in ministry, not a threat to it, and how preachers and worship leaders can use science more positively in their teaching and preaching. 16720 Science, Preaching, and the Church Haarsma, Deborah; Hoezee, Scott 1/28/2011 We believe God is sovereign over the natural world, including the amazing things discovered by modern science. Christians have readily accepted the technological and medical benefits of modern science but have often ignored or rejected other scientific developments. In this workshop Deborah Haarsma will give a case study of Christian responses to the science of origins, including young earth creationism, intelligent design, and theistic evolution. Scott Hoezee will discuss how the church can have a broader and more positive engagement with the scientific disciplines in sermons, worship, and the life of the church.

16865 Scientific and Theological Issues on Human Origins Haarsma, Loren 10/8/2010 This is the first of what we hope will be a series of seminars this year by various speakers on the topic of human origins. We will first summarize discoveries made in the l ast few decades in genetics and paleontology, and discuss what we can learn from these discoveries about how God created humans. Then we'll survey main points of Christian tradition on a number of important theological topics: humans as God's image-bearer s, the human soul, original sin, and natural evil. We'll describe several proposed scenarios for human origins which seek to bring together what we learn both from scripture and from nature, and we'll analyze some of the pros and cons of those scenarios. The goal of this seminar is to map out the important issues, the areas of agreement, and the range of disagreements. Audience questions and suggestions will influence which particular issues we explore in greater depth in later seminars. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

14169 Search for Extra-terrestrial Life, The Haarsma, Loren; Molnar, Larry 12/1/2006 As of now, there is no evidence of life beyond earth. But within the last decade, astronomers have discovered over a hundred planets in other solar systems, and they a re on the verge of being technically capable of detecting earth-like planets (if any exist) in nearby star systems. In this talk, we will review the current status of the search for extra-solar planets, as well as the search for life beyond earth in our own solar system. We'll also review current hypotheses, both scientific and theological, for how life first arose on earth. Then we'll turn to the question: If extraterrestrial life - even single-celled life – was discovered, what would be some o f the scientific and theological consequences? 13775 Searching for the Self in Complex Terrains: A Conversation with Lilian Nattel and Mary Doria Russell Nattel, Scott; Russell, Mary Doria 4/21/2006 In a moderated discussion, historical fiction novelists Lilian Nattel and Mary Doria Russell explore the ways in which their complex uses of space, setting, and narration tr y to make sense of specific historical times. How does a character's search for self and meaning in a past moment of history connect to the present reader's own searching? Should there be such a connection? And if so, how does the historical novelist writ e to two time periods: the period of the novel and the present? Bookstore (college) : Available for sale.

11901 Seeing and Believing: The Constructive Role of Visual Elements in our Worship Today Torgerson, Mark 1/30/2004 The church has long used visual elements in its efforts to praise and adore our holy God. We will consider the worship life of our churches today and examine the many ways i n which visual expressions can indeed nurture an understanding of God and growth in Christ. Particular attention will be paid to the ways in which we might mobilize the visual for connecting to the highly visual culture in which we find ourselves.< /TD> Bookstore (college) : Available for sale.

10697 Seeker-Sensitive Churches Bolt, John; Daley, Andre; Oosterhoff, Ronda; Weener, Sherwin
#105 SEEKER-SENSITIVE CHURCHES What is church for? Is it only for believers, or is it also a place for others to find out about God? As people try to make church more of a welcoming place for newcomers, some worry that worship and the Bible are getting watered down. Four guests explore some of the goals and concerns regarding seeker-sensitive churches:
John Bolt, Calvin Seminary, Andre Daley, pastor of a seeker-sensitiv e church in Grand Rapids, Ronda Oosterhoff, former Communications Coordinator at Willow Creek Community Church
Sherwin Weener, Reformed Synod of the Great Lake

16320 Selling Out or Looking Up: Writing in and for a Christian Market Parrish, Christa 4/16/2010 Critics of the Christian fiction sub-genre have for years lamented certain aspects of the Christian book industry, yet talented authors continue to write and publish specifi cally for this market. Christa Parrish discusses some of the artistic frustrations and limitations she's encountered within her own writing journey, while also exploring the idea that Christian fiction isn't necessarily "selling out" but "l ooking up." 14069 Sense and Sensibility Sandberg, Stephanie 11/8/2006 Script adapted from Jane Austen's novel by Heather Brown
and Stephanie Sandberg. Directed by Stephanie Sandberg

Set in the shift between Classicism and Romanticis m Jane Austen's classic novel asks the question, “Can we be rational in love?” Adapted for numerous stage, film, and television productions, Calvin Theatre Company's Sense and Sensibility emphasizes the novel's innate dramatic qualities, often sharp satirical wit, and the complicated road to love in a society where wealth was considered an indication of character and a little gossip could go a long way.

16357 Shadow of My Hand on the Paper: Writing and Living a Life, The Palmer, Parker 4/17/2010 May Sarton's poem, "Now I Become Myself," offers a vivid image of the hand that writes, shadowing the shape of the writer's life. Whether we write with pen and pap er or at a keyboard, we start with a blank page and fill it with words—just as we fill space and time with our lives. But are time, space, and blank pages really empty? Do we invent our writing and our living? Or do we discover hidden realities with every word and act? Parker Palmer describes how writing is, for him, discovery and invention, just as living is—done in fear and trembling, faith and hope. Festival Faith & Writing Ofc. : Available with permission.

16085 Shaping the Future of Christianity: A Collective Responsibility Quarshie, Ben 10/29/2009 Dr. Ben Quarshie, the new leader of the Akrofi-Christaller Institute, a longtime programs partner to Calvin College in Ghana, and a biblical scholar, succeeds the late disti nguished theologian, Kwame Bediako as rector of the Akrofi-Christaller Institute of Theology, Mission and Culture. Dr. Quarshie holds the Ph.D. degree in New Testament studies from Princeton Theological Seminary, and has taught for many years in the relig ious studies faculty of the University of Ghana.
His lecture is "Shaping the Future of Christianity: A Collective Responsibility." In it, he emphasizes that the much discussed "future of Christianity" in an age when the faith's hea rtlands have been shifting to the global South is now a shared responsibility. Northern Christians cannot simply hand off responsibility for our faith's future, and Southern Christians cannot assume that they must go it alone. But what does shared respons ibility look like? Dr. Quarshie will offer some perspectives.

16619 She Stoops to Conquer Freeberg, Debra L. 11/10/2010 Set in eighteenth century splendor, this Irish comedy shows us how there’s something about the country air that invites folly. Sweet-talking young dandy, Marlow, think s he’s at a bed and breakfast when he’s actually unknowingly participating in an elaborate farce of mistaken identities and broken social norms. To start with, it’s not a bed and breakfast, the old man is not the innkeeper, and that pret ty girl is not a barmaid. It’s the old man’s home and that girl was the blind date Marlow’s father had set up for him. Join on this bucolic romp of misadventure.

We pay them more than our President, we wait in lines for hours to buy tickets , we drag our three-year-olds to soccer practice in hopes of growing a star. But what happens when athletes do become stars--what happens to them, what happens to us? Sports Illustrated and NPR commentator Frank Deford discusses whether we should be a lit tle more selective in choosing who we uphold as model citizens.

15200 Should Christians be Structural Realists? Crull, Elise 10/3/2008 There is much ado in philosophy of science concerning structural realism--a position about scientific theories that purports to be the "best of both worlds" by dod ging major bullets on both sides of the realism debate. In this talk, I investigate whether or not Christians have different and/or stronger reasons for adopting such a position. I argue that despite the initial appeal of structural realism, it admits of objections that cannot be surmounted even with the aid of arguments from Christianity. Nevertheless, I suggest that a more nuanced version of structural realism in the vein of Poincaré might yet provide a tantalizing option for a faith-informed ana lysis of what science claims to be and do.
