The resulting prayer-poems draw us deeply into the incarnational reality that Hopkins felt so keenly. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

14591 Reading Scripture with Our Foremothers Taylor, Marion 3/4/2008 Women have been thoughtful readers of scripture throughout the ages, yet the history of interpretation has not included their voices. Authors such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Christina Rossetti, Josephine Butler, Grace Aquilar and many others have much to teach us about the Bible.

13609 Reading the Bible in the Global South Jenkins, Philip 1/12/2006 Distinguished Professor of History and Religious Studies at Pennsylvania State University, Phillip Jenkins is the author of many books including "The Next Christendom: The Rise of Global Christianity" and "Hidden Gospels: How the Search for Jesus Lost Its Way". In "The Next Christendom" and in his presentation on The January Series, Jenkins will discuss the ways the Bible is read in the churches of the global South - in Africa and Asia - and how those readings reveal a deep estrangement between the dominant forms of Chirstianity in the global North and South. He states that Southern churches are using the Bible with a freshness and authenticity that simply cannot be achieved by the prosperous societies of the global North.

14638 Reading to "Become" Muth, Jon 4/17/2008 In writing stories, we invite others to feel the world in the same way we do. In reading stories, we participate in a powerful conjuring experience. When these actions are c onsidered in relation to children, there is an added profundity and an important responsibility. It's important that kids read to "become," not just to escape. Muth talks about how he tries to help kids do this through his own work. None : Archive/Available for Research

14070 Realm of Ghosts, The: Sickness to Death in the Early Holland Colony Verhave, Jan Peter 11/10/2006 While at the Van Raalte Institute, Dr. Jan Peter Verhave is doing research on the state of health of the early Dutch immigrants and their vulnerability to certain disea ses, as derived from reports on their physical well-being in letters to family and friends in the Netherlands. Particularly during the first few years the settlers suffered a lot, and the poor living conditions triggered some fatal diseases. Epidemic dis eases came, as well as the naturalization trial: the Michigan ague. Dr. Verhave is a microbiologist at the Radboud University Medical Centre of Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and is an authority on the history of malaria and tropical diseases. 13600 Reconstructing the Art of Happiness Charry, Ellen 11/2/2005 Christian reclamation of the art of happiness will chart a mediating path between an inordinately eschatological Christian treatment that has difficulty embracing happiness in this life and an inordinately political treatment of happiness that has difficulty embracing the spiritual dimensions of happiness. Happiness is the by-product of wisdom and skills for adroit self-use garnered from the habit of knowing, loving, and enj oying God.
Dr. Charry joined the Princeton Theological Seminary faculty in 1997, having been an assistant professor of theology in the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University.
Her most recent books are Inquiring After God: Classic and Contemporary Readings (2000) and By the Renewing of Your Minds: Pastoral Function of Christian Doctrine (1997). Dr. Charry is also the author of many scholarly and popular articles and is editor of Theology Today and editor at large for The Ch ristian Century.

The Bible provides a vast literature of lament for every follower of Jesus who is in the midst of wrestling with God concerning the difficult issues of life in a fallen world. In this seminar we hope to offer an introduction to bi blical lament, as well as contemporary and ancient examples of "applied lament." None : Not Available for sale.

How can we practice worship in whic h our Christian identity is always more important than our particular tradition, while being grateful for our own heritage and at the same time gratefully receive the spiritual gifts that come to us with other accents? This session explores the very diffe rent answers often given to the question 'What does it mean to be Reformed?' 14624 Religious Heritage of Right Talk:
A Symposium, The
Wolterstorff, Nicholas
Witte, John Jr.
3/31/2008 Is religion opposed to rights? Does justice require curbing religious influence? Both popular and academic discussions of human rights tend to see religion as a threat. Thus 'enlightened' secularists are still given to alarmist accounts of how religious traditions squelch civil rights, or how confessional communities trample over human rights claims. On this account, only 'secular' democracy can secure justice, often precise ly against the claims of religion.

But this version of the story has been called into question by recent research. On Monday, March 31, Calvin College will host a symposium with two internationally-acclaimed scholars who have a very different story to tell. John Witte, Jr., Robitscher Professor of Law and Director of the Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University, will discuss the roots and origins of a modern account of human rights in early modern Calvinism. And Nicholas Wolters torff, Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology Emeritus at Yale, will dig back even further, arguing that modern intuitions about rights and justice are indebted to Hebrew and Christian scriptures - and cannot be sustained by a wholly secular etho s.

14623 Religious Tolerance -- Love Your Neighbor Koldenhoven, Dean 3/31/2008 The annual Paul Henry Lecture, featuring Dean Koldenhoven, former mayor of Palos Heights, Illinois and 2002 recipient of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award will be at 7:30 p.m. on March 31, 2008 in the Prince Conference Center on the Calvin College Campus. Mr. Koldenhoven will speak on "Political Tolerance -- Love Your Neighbor."

In 2000, plans to purchase a vacant Christian church and open a mosqu e in the Chicago suburb of Palos Heights were met with extensive opposition from the community and city council. Mayor Koldenhoven took a stand within his community in support of the Al Salam Mosque Foundation, condemning bigotry and religious intolerance toward the Islamic community. He was subsequently defeated in his bid for relection in 2001.

In 2002, Koldenhoven received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for political courage and public service. When asked how he decided to take his controversial stand in the community, Koldenhoven replied "I learned in grammar school about the First Amendment in which the first part of it says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free ex ercise thereof" and Jesus command in the Bible when he says to "love your neighbor." The decision was easy."

A reception will immediately follow the lecture in the Fireside Room at the Prince Conference Center. The lecture is fr ee and open to the public.

Healthy Congregations is a seminar designed by Peter Steinke, author of the books How Your Church Family Works: Understan ding Congregations as Emotional Systems and Healthy Congregations: A Systems Approach. A key concept at the heart of Healthy Congregations is “self-differentiation,” people's capacity to calmly articulate what they think and value, and to act on that basis, while staying in active relationship with those who disagree. This seminar is beneficial for both clergy and lay leaders.

14481 Renovation of the Heart: Spirituality Willard, Dallas; Zandstra, Pat 1/24/2008 Pastors, musicians, and worship leaders know that they are no more immune to spiritual struggles than any other members of the congregation. We all find regular occasion to regret flaws in our Christian character and so to pray for strength to make more progress toward Christ-likeness in both our public lives as church leaders and in our private times as well. Dr. Dallas Willard believes that just this kind of spirit transfo rmation can and will happen when we allow God to bring every element of our being into harmony with the will of God and the kingdom of God. By being transformed from the inside out, we become apprentices of Christ Jesus. As the old spiritual has us sing, "Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart." This workshop will focus on key spiritual disciplines and practices that can help bring our hearts into living contact with the grace of God, renovating us from the ruin of sin into the shining likeness of our Savior. The aim will be on specific steps toward specific changes that anyone can make, from stepping out of pornographic obsession to freedom from anger and contempt. The seminar will conclude with a panel of pastors and church le aders who will discuss the application of Dr. Willard’s advice in worship, sermons, and church life. 13667 Responsible Freedom Crump, David 9/19/2005 The definition of responsible freedom that we use at Calvin is 'the cultivation of a Spirit-directed life guided by a godly conscience.' This is how religion professor Dav id Crump helped student life define the term after decades of using the term at Calvin without a common understanding. All first-year students, through the Prelude course, hear Dr. Crump explain the two faces of freedom as outlined in Galatians 5. We are free from the tyranny that we must earn our salvation by rules and good behavior. God knows all our shortcomings and, because of Jesus Christ, loves us in spite of them. Since we are set free'from' earning our salvation, we are set free 'to' keep 'in step with the Spirit.' In college, many choices fall on the side of a 'Spirit-directed life,' and some don’t. Some choices are not up for grabs: underage drinking, drunkenness, premarital sex, and stealing work that is not ours. But at Calvin we know th at in other areas life does present choices for all of us that can help or hinder us, especially as we live in community.

47 Rethinking the Relationship between Worship and Culture Ward, Karen 1/13/2001 Most of the tensions over worship today concern the relationship of worship to culture. Should worship be relevant to our culture? What if culture diminishes the central m essage of the gospel? Shouldn't worship also be counter-cultural? And what about all those cross-cultural resources for worship? This workshop will present a framework for rethinking rhe relationship of worship and culture, as well as practical example s and case studies from a wide variety of ethnic and cultural traditions.

Christian Scholarship...For What?
14362 Revisiting the "God of the Gaps" Larson, Ronald 9/21/2007 Antipathy to "God of the Gaps" arguments, when taken to its extreme conclusion, leads to passiveness in the face of aggressive, naturalistic, science seeking to c laim for itself alone all truth, including that traditionally the province of theology or philosophy. Such pretensions must be resisted for the sake of science as much as for the sake of theology, and this resistance must not shrink from calling attentio n to “gaps” or failures of science to explain credibly all that it sometimes claims as its own. This talk will explore the issues surrounding several chasms in modern scientific explanations, including the fine tuning of natural laws, the ori gin of life, of human consciousness, of morality, and of human spiritual experience.

Christian Scholarship...For What?
14143 Role of Music in Worshipping God, The Kauflin, Bob 1/26/2007 How should music function when we gather to worship God? Not knowing the answer to that question has caused conflicts in churches throughout the world. In our music-addicted culture, music can easily become an object of worship itself. Others have reacted to that tendency and have greatly restricted the place of music in the church. This workshop will discuss how to use music in a way that truly honors God. A case will be ma de for music that is skillfully played, with variety, complementary to the lyrics, and submitted to serving God's people rather than the musician's ego.
