13603 People, Pipes and Players Hamersma, John E. 1/4/2006 Do emotions have sound? How does a pipe organ work? How can it sound both like a rock concert and a flute? Why are some pipes the size of pencils while others are as tall as telephone poles?
John Hamersma speaks about the past and future of the organ, the "King of Instruments". This multi-sensory presentation is dynamic and, John assures us, not just "an old man talking about pipe organs"! This mu lti-media presentation is a collaboration of many talents including Daniel Garcia (from Calvin's Communications, Arts & Sciences Department) who is serving as executive director of the presentation and Carl Hordyk (from Calvin's Office of Conferences & Campus Events) who is serving as the technical director.
John retired in the spring of 2004 from his position at Calvin College as Professor of Music and College Organist after 50 years of teaching in the classroom and the organ studio, accomp anying worship on campus and performing. He is currently serving his 31st year as Organist/Choirmaster at Grace Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

16093 Perspectives on the Slums of Nairobi, Kenya: What is the Role of the Churches? Bodewes, Christine 10/20/2009 Christine Bodewes received her B.A. with honors from Saint Mary's and went on to receive a J.D. degree from the University of Illinois Urbana. Her Ph.D. was through the Scho ol of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.
For seven years, Dr. Bodewes was a partner in a large Chicago law firm practicing corporate securities litigation. In 1997, she became a Maryknoll lay missioner, moving to Nairobi, Kenya, where she worked on legal reform and civic education in Kibera (the largest slum in Kenya and Sub-Saharan Africa). Bodewes co-founded the land rights program at the Legal Aid Clinic in Kibera, as well as founding the Office of Human Rights, a grass roots program providing free legal service, civic education and advocacy on human rights issues to slum dwellers.

14552 Plenary #2: Edward Cardoza Cardoza, Edward 2/1/2008 Building a movement for global health equity means tackling not just disease, but all the barriers to health. Skeptics warn this approach is too complicated, too expensive and unsustainable-but time and time again experience has shown that a comprehensive approach is the only way to fundamentally improve the health of patients and improve the quality of life in communities. Drawing from the experience of Partners In Health in Haiti and Rwanda, Ed Cardoza will present some elements which might prove essential ingredients in a long-term strategy for reversing generations of privation.

16165 Plenary #3 Gbowee, Leymah 2/5/2010 Leymah Gbowee (pronounced LAY-mah, BEAU-wee) was a 17 year-old girl when the war first came to Monrovia. As she says, she turned, "from a child into an adult in a matte r of hours." She later trained as a trauma counselor and worked with the ex-child soldiers of Taylor's army and came to see that they were too were victims.
Leymah joined the Woman in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET) and quickly rose to leadership. She brought the women of the Christian Churches together into a group called the Christian Women's Initiative and began issuing calls for peace, then formed a coalition with women in Muslim organizations, eventually forming the Liberian Mass Action for Pe ace.
Leymah is currently building Women, Peace and Security Africa, a women's organization in Ghana that will build relationships across the West African sub-region and support women's capacity to prevent, avert and end conflicts.

14553 Plenary #3: Ernso Jean Louis Louis, Ernso Jean 2/1/2008 My country Haiti has been, and still is, for as long as I can remember the poorest country in the western world. 65% of the population is born again Christian, yet nothing has changed in the day-to-day lives of the people. What can be done?
The answers lie in the hands of a new breed of missionaries, young men and women who are willing to go in those developing countries in order to show these people how to fish and n ot to give them a fish everyday like it has been in the past.
I want to encourage others to get involve in what several sociologists have called the 'Quiet Revolution', helping others to become sustainable.

He moved to East and southern Africa region as CRWRC-regional HIV/A IDS coordinator, a position he held until June 2004 when he was hired as a Country consultant in Uganda. In 2006, he took over a new role as team leader for East/South Africa.

14555 Plenary #4: Luis Noda Noda, Luis 2/2/2008 The sustainability of development actions is a high desired goal from the beginning of any project or program. However, this is an element that does not come spontaneously u nless it is planned for and foreseen. But, what do we mean by sustainability? In my professional experience working in development projects and programs, sustainability has to do with the local context, institutional settings, ownership and participation of beneficiaries. Moreover, under a Christian perspective, sustainability has to do with personal beliefs, attitudes and actions (behavior change) that shape the final result of development efforts.

Is that loss of confidence too far advanced to be reversible even by mounting evidence of an unflagging resurgence? 16296 Power of Visual Imagery, The Nicolosi, Barbara 4/15/2010 Long before the advent of movies changed the pacing and style of popular storytelling, the greatest writers understood that "a picture is worth a thousand words." Nothing gets a story stuck in a reader's mind like a lyrical image to expand, mirror, and add complexity to a project's theme. In this session, Barbara Nicolosi discusses how to create powerful visual metaphors and how to avoid maudlin ones, encouraging w riters to embrace mystery. 33 Praise and Prayer of All God's People, The Ding, Lucy 1/15/2001 Our musical prayer is enriched significantly by music from other cultures. We don't sing music from other cultures simply to be politically correct or because it's musicall y interesting. We receive this music as a gift that helps us sense the length and breadth of the universal church and that helps us grow in the depth and vitality of our prayer. Come to this session both to hear worship music from many cultural settings and to explore how to incorporate this diversity in your congregation.

3136 Preacher and His Voice, The Helmus, Christian 12/2/1999

11899 Preacher as Minor Poet, The Barnes, Craig 1/30/2004 T.S. Eliot once claimed that every culture needs its minor as well as major poets. The major poets write the eternal sonnets that echo through the centuries. The minor poet inculcates those words to particular people in specific contexts. The preacher's calling is thus to serve as a minor poet who speaks the inherited Word into the despair and heartache, or the beauty and miracle, that lie just beneath the thin veneer of the ordinary. 28 Preaching and the Practices of the Christian Faith Long, Thomas 1/12/2001 Recently theology has emphasized the understanding of the Christian faith as a set of practices--activities like showing hospitality, bearing witness to the truth, and seeki ng reconciliation--that Christians have done in the past and continue to do that together make up the Christian life. Preaching is often aimed at the idea level of faith, but in this seminar we will explore what difference it might make if preaching take s on the goal of nourishing the practices of the faith.
