6353 Objects of Love O'Donovan, Rev. Oliver 11/6/2001 "My purpose in this year's Stob Lectures is not to explore the expository questions surrounding Augustine's proposal, nor to discuss the merits of realist and idealist political theories. It is, rather, to exploit the understanding that Augustine holds out to us, by reflecting on a range of common moral and social phenomena characteristic of life in late-modern society, and holding them up to the light of his suggestion ."
Oliver O'Donovan is Regius Professor of Moral and Pastoral Theology at the University of Oxford and Canon of Christ Church. His interests lie in the field of Christian ethics, especially Christian political thought, contemporary and historical .

11749 On Christian Plilosophy in an Age of Terror Rivers, Eugene 1/19/2004 The 20th century stands out as a powerful empirical argument against the daringly original fantasy Europe remarkably referred to as the Enlightenment. Ironically, this era g ave birth to new visions of moral and political possibilities: total war, totalitarianism and the Holocaust. This madness presented a historic opportunity to advance an alternative vision of human rationality. We missed this opportunity. On September 11, 2001, unbelievable human tragedy gave way to an exceptional historic opportunity to bear witness to this age. Eugene Rivers, a nationally recognized inner-city pastor, will provide insight into this window of opportunity for Christian philosophers to intr oduce us to a new theory of politics and culture. 14039 Outdoor Experiences for the Young and Young at Heart Hoogewind, Cheryl 9/29/2006 Cheryl Hoogewind is the Ecosystem Preserve Manager at Calvin College.
When was the last time you spent an hour or more outdoors enjoying God’s creation? Peop le are spending more and more time indoors keeping busy with computers, televisions, Xboxes, video games, Ipods, and many other kinds of technology. We are over-scheduling our lives with organized sports, music lessons, and school activities of all kind s. Richard Louv poses some interesting questions in his book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. What is happening to our children and ourselves because we are not spending time in nature? What is capturing our at tention? There are simple ways to give children outdoor experiences in their own backyards and to encourage wonder and creativity. In this seminar, I will share my ideas and give suggestions about how we can avoid 'nature-deficit disorder'.

14566 Overcoming Challenges to Racial and Ethnic Diversity Marti, Gerardo 1/25/2008 This workshop is for pioneers working through the challenge of creating ethnically and racially diverse churches. By looking at successfully diverse churches across the nati on, we reveal critical attitudes for cultivating a hospitable church, perspectives on recent immigration and the neighborhood church, and experiments on musical variety and global awareness. This workshop will stimulate many ideas through discussion of ge stures that signal openness, strategies for contextualizing musical practices that incorporate rather than alienate while avoiding ethnic and racial stereotypes, and issues of change and transition. #113 OVERCOMING RACIAL HATRED When Patricia Raybon wrote the book My First White Friend: Confessions on Race, Love, and Forgiveness, she was in the midst of an amazing tran sformation. Writing it helped her to face the "racial feelings" which she ultimately recognized as hate. Her message about the power of forgiveness will touch every heart that considers it.
