15199 Interactions between Science and Philosophy: Newton on Space and Body Majeski, Carey James; Wykstra, Steve 10/17/2008 This talk presents some results of Carey James (C.J.) Majeski’s summer research project under Professor S. Wykstra, funded by a McGregor fellowship. C.J. describes so me aspects of the collaborative research experience, with some reflections on how Christian faith and academic research interact. He introduces a key selection from "On Gravity and the Equilibrium of Fluids" by Isaac Newton . It shows a strong p hilosophical side of Newton’s thought, in which his theological commitments seem to actively inform--in some surprising ways--the conceptual foundations of his physics, both in his treatment of the concept of space and of material body. 15100 Jesus: Our Worship Leader Man, Ron 1/30/2009 A pastor cannot lead us into God's presence. Nor can a worship leader or a Christian artist, or a song, or singing. Not even worship can lead us into God's presence. Only Je sus can, through the power of the Holy Spirit. This seminar will explore the wonderful truth that when we gather, our living Lord is present and active in our midst—empowering, perfecting and leading our worship. We will see that behind all true wor ship, regardless of its form or style, is the present mediating ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

14511 Thematic Worship: A Rich Feast for the People of God Man, Ron 1/25/2008 Rather than attempting unity in our services through a commonality of style or form, how much richer and spiritually nourishing to use a biblical or theological theme as a u nifying principle. This approach allows for the use of a rich variety of forms and styles, and gives time to focus on and respond to an aspect of God and his truth in a way that is edifying and serves a catechetical function over the long run. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.
Symposium on Worship, 2008
14535 Blended Worship: Good for the Body Man, Ron 1/25/2008 The best argument for blended worship is that the body of Christ by definition is itself blended—therefore our services should reflect that reality. But how do we plan worship that is historically, culturally and generationally diverse? We will look at the biblical case for blended worship, as well as principles and practices. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.
Symposium on Worship, 2008
15107 Firm Foundation, A: Biblical Principles of Worship Man, Ron 1/30/2009 It is critical that churches base their worship practices upon unchanging, foundational principles from God's Word. We need a common understanding of what we dare not chan ge from church to church, culture to culture, century to century—even while we celebrate the rich diversity of expression which God delights in and which the New Testament allows for. Twelve principles were presented as a scriptural framework for th inking about, preaching and teaching on, and planning and leading corporate worship. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.
Symposium on Worship, 2009
15078 Worship and the Word Man, Ron 1/30/2009 Many churches, and especially those in the Protestant free-church tradition, need to use the Scriptures more in their worship. This seminar will explore why and how the Bibl e should inform, infuse and enrich our worship planning and leading. We will also look at practical ways to bring the Word in all its richness into both our regular and our holiday worship services. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

14668 Reading Gerard Manley Hopkins: The Christ-Saturated Thing Itself Mariani, Paul 4/18/2008 When Gerard Manley Hopkins took vows as a Jesuit, he was already an accomplished poet. Although he distinguished his poetic and priestly vocations, he also linked them, wedd ing the tightly constructed sonnet form to disciplined Ignatian meditation practices. The resulting prayer-poems draw us deeply into the incarnational reality that Hopkins felt so keenly. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

11890 Thoughtful Questions for Worship Planners Marsh, Ryan 1/30/2004 Anyone with the responsibility of leading, directing, writing or composing for corporate worship has an incredibly complex privilege before him or her. Perhaps even more tha n teaching and sermonizing, worship shapes a congregation's theology. Worship tells people who God is and how God deals with the world and the people he has made. And conversely, worship gives people ways to respond to God. This workshop will ask a number of engaging questions of our worship, revealing ways to lead, direct, write and compose for more thoughtful corporate worship. 14566 Overcoming Challenges to Racial and Ethnic Diversity Marti, Gerardo 1/25/2008 This workshop is for pioneers working through the challenge of creating ethnically and racially diverse churches. By looking at successfully diverse churches across the nati on, we reveal critical attitudes for cultivating a hospitable church, perspectives on recent immigration and the neighborhood church, and experiments on musical variety and global awareness. This workshop will stimulate many ideas through discussion of ge stures that signal openness, strategies for contextualizing musical practices that incorporate rather than alienate while avoiding ethnic and racial stereotypes, and issues of change and transition. 14503 How Race Works in Multiracial Churches Marti, Gerardo 1/25/2008 This workshop is for those who want a deeper understanding of racial dynamics in today’s churches. Stories and examples from real congregations will show how race with in churches is becoming complicated-and creatively reconstructed-through the post-1965 waves of immigration. Most important, we show how various good-intentioned priorities and programs work (and often don’t work) in racially diverse churches. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

10714 In Search of the Cross-Cultural Church Matias, John
#122 IN SEARCH OF THE CROSS-CULTURAL CHURCH
The idea of a neighborhood church is becoming a charming relic. Nowadays, worshippers drive all around until they find a chur ch where they feel the most comfortable. But this has lead to homogeneous churches where anyone different feels out of place. Should church be like home, or a place where we stretch to build new friendships? Should we be dissatisfied with a congregation t hat is only made of one ethnic group? Guest host June Hamersma discusses these questions with John Matias, pastor of City Hope CRC/RCA, and Reggie Smith, pastor of Roosevelt Park Community CRC.

Some say children should be removed from a family only as a last resort, if their lives are in danger. And then every effort should be made to return them, even if it means spending a long time in foster care. Others say putting the child's needs first means getting them quickly into a new permanent home. Let's hear the arguments from two experts in the field of foster care: Em ily Jean McFadden, professor at the Grand Valley State University School of Social Work, and Stephene Diepstra of the Calvin College social work department.

10695 School Choice: Move or Improve? McGlynn, Amy; Walstra, Glen
#103 SCHOOL CHOICE: MOVE OR IMPROVE? There is no question that everyone debating over vouchers and school choice wants children to win. The tough part is figuring out which system would be more successful. If voters approve voucher Proposal 1 on November 7, will thousands of floundering students finally get a chance to excel by switching over to better schools? Or will most students stay where they are, with only the public funding switching over to better schools? Will this measure improve or devastate public schools? Let's ask a leader from each side of the debate: Amy McGlynn of the Grand Rapids Board of Education, and Glen Walstra, Executive Director of the Michigan Ass ociation of Non-Public Schools.

13639 Songs by Ken Medema for Congregational Singing Medema, Ken 1/27/2006 C13 Ken will use many of his own songs as a vehicle for demonstrating a skill learned over many years: facilitating group singing. If worship is the work of the people and i f singing is part of that work then it should be engaged in with intentionality and energy. Ken will demonstrate ways of teaching a song, creating a variety of textures, exploring the theology of songs, and building energy toward the final realization of the song. 182 Death: Enemy or Friend? Meilaender, Gilbert 1/20/2000 Since for humans to have life means to know that death is inevitable, learning how to die is a lesson we all must learn. In this endeavor our culture gives us conflicting si gnals about our dying. On the one hand, death is understood to be an enemy of our control over our fate, and is, therefore, an indignity; and on the other hand, death is understood as a natural part of life, a friend whose coming we should embrace. This p resentation deals with the tension between death as friend and death as foe from the perspectives of the narratives of dying patients, providing insights on learning to "die well." Dr. Meilaender holds the Board of Directors Chair in Christian E thics at Valparaiso University. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Religious Ethics. Heritage Hall : Available for sale. 181 Balkans: Tragedy in Perspective Meyer, Steven 1/19/2000 Since the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1992, tragedy has plagued the Balkans. Ethnic hatred and the violence it produces are the most deadly forces at work in this part of Euro pe today. But this has not always been so. Misunderstanding of Balkan ethnicity exacerbates the tragedy and prevents us from playing a truly positive role in that melancholy land. Dr. Meyer addresses our inability to cope with the fact that the forces dri ving the post-Cold War world are fundamentally different from those that drove the Cold War. Dr. Meyer is with the Central Intelligence Agency. As part of that role he is a professor at National Defense University, Industrial College of the Armed Forces i n Washington, D.C. 14414 Literature and Scripture: An "Impossible Filiation" Miller, J.Hillis 10/18/2007 Renowned literary scholar, prolific theorist and critic, J. Hillis Miller earned fame in the eighties as one of the four "Yale School" critics, a group largely re sponsible for introducing deconstruction to American literary studies.
This lecture discusses the relation between literature and Scripture by way of what Derrida says about “impossible filiation.” Miller will take Beloved and The Divine Comedy as examples of literature and the Abraham and Isaac story and the Mary Magdalene story at the end of Luke (recognition of the risen Christ) as examples of Scriptural stories. Miller will claim they make quite different claims on the reader's allegi ance, but that Western literature, even the most secular, inherits essential things from Scripture. Miller will conclude by discussing the so-called “turn to religion” in the humanities today from the perspective of a long career that has seen fads come and go, and religion relocate in university life.
