The Lady's Not for Burning by Christopher Fry
Directed by Debra Freeberg

April 19 - 21, 26 - 28, 2007
Gezon Theatre

The year is 1400-give or take a year or two. A world weary veteran of the Hundred Years' War longs to be free of his life, so he implicates himself for murder and applies to the Mayor to be hung-but no one will grant his wish and hang him! A wealthy, beautiful young woman, fond of life, is accused of turning a man into a dog, but the more she protests her innocence, the more the witch-mad townspeople are convinced she's guilty. They meet in the chambers of a befuddled Mayor and his frantic, foolish household and fall in love.

It is a comedy. It's a love story. A gentle springtime romance in Renaissance style.

To many people, Jazz is something that is not very "listener-friendly." Often it may seem that the musicians are in their own world sharing secrets with the other musicians on stage. Even if people enjoy listening to Jazz, they still may not really understand what is going on. Xavier Davis, joined by bassist Brandon Owens and drummer E.J. Strickland to form the Xavier Davis Trio, will attempt to demystify Jazz. Att endees will leave with a greater appreciation for this American art form. This greater appreciation and understanding will hopefully lead to greater enjoyment when listening to this rich music. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale. 13630 Last Thirty Years, The; What we've Learned Along the Way Aymer, Albert; Beach, Nancy; McLaren, Brian; Peterson, Eugene; Sibley, Larry; Witvliet, John; Zimmerman, Joyce 1/26/2006 Seminar 3 Host: John D. Witvliet with Albert Aymer, Nancy Beach, Brian McLaren, Eugene Peterson, Larry Sibley, Joyce Zimmerman
What a period of change we've all been li ving through! Arguably, Christian worship practices have changed more, and in more different directions, in the last forty years than in any single period, with the possible exception of the earliest days of the church. How we conceptualize this change 212;whether we see it as mostly good or mostly harmful—significantly affects the attitudes and trajectories of our ministries today. During the day, we will hear very different perspectives on the last forty years, with contributions from a post-Vat ican II Roman Catholic liturgical reformer (Joyce Zimmerman), an influential writer on Christian spirituality (Eugene Peterson), an Orthodox Presbyterian pastor who has engaged in significant historical study (Larry Sibley), and a leading theologian in th e Emergent church movement (Brian McLaren), a staff member at Willow Creek Community Church (Nancy Beach), and a seminary president and pastor (Albert Aymer). Beyond the descriptive history, the day's sessions will primarily seek to address the question o f what we have learned and how we have been growing as disciples of Jesus along the way.

14709 Law and Order in the Urban Ghetto Venkatesh Sudhir 4/10/2008 Calvin College will be bringing a well-known sociologist to Grand Rapids in mid-April for its annual Bouma Lecture.

Sudhir Venkatesh will speak on April 10 at 3:30 pm in the Meeter Center Lecture Hall on "Law and Order in the Urban Ghetto."

Calvin sociology professor Mark Mulder says Venkatesh is a good fit for the annual Bouma Lecture, named for Donald Bouma who taught at Calvin from 1946 to 1960 and did groundbreaking work in civil rights and community organization.

"Dr. Bouma was always very passionate about issues of social justice," said Mulder, "as is our current department. Venkatesh conducts exhaustive ethnographic resear ch that offers compelling insights on urban poverty in the U.S. Most significantly, his findings interrogate numerous assumptions and misconceptions about poverty. There are complex social organizations, networks and processes that exist in what Venkatesh calls the urban ghetto."

11752 Leaders Breaking Down Barriers: Sport as a Model to Bridge the Racial Divide Lapchick, Richard 1/22/2004 “Sports captures people’s imaginations, their love, their hate, their passion,” said Richard Lapchick, chair holder at the University of Central Florida 217;s DeVos Sport Business Management Program and director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport. He believes that sport can be an effective instrument of positive social change and can be used to break down barriers between different racial groups. Lapchick, often described as ‘ the racial conscience of sport,’ will challenge the audience as leaders in their community to address the crises faced by America’s youth from violence to drugs. He will draw from his own experience as the son of Joe Lapchick, the famous Original Celtic center who became a legendary coach for St. John’s and the Knicks. 14144 Leading with Light: Using Video Projectors Wisely Koster, Steven 1/26/2007 How should music function when we gather to worship God? Not knowing the answer to that question has caused conflicts in churches throughout the world. In our music-addicted culture, music can easily become an object of worship itself. Others have reacted to that tendency and have greatly restricted the place of music in the church. This workshop will discuss how to use music in a way that truly honors God. A case will be ma de for music that is skillfully played, with variety, complementary to the lyrics, and submitted to serving God's people rather than the musician's ego.

The work of the nature writer is to invite readers to see the world—really see it, leaves and bones—and by that seeing, to find a gratitude so full th at it can't be distinguished from joy. The 16th annual Wiersma Memorial Lecture brings an alumnus back to the Calvin College campus who is familiar to the college not only as a poet, but also as a friend of the late Stanley Wiersma (the Calvin English professor for whom the series is named).
Rod Jellema, emeritus professor of English at the University of Maryland and founder of that school's creative writing program, del ivered the lecture, speaking and reading from his poetry.
A 1951 Calvin graduate (as was Wiersma) Jellema is a poet whose latest volume, A Slender Grace: Poems, was named 2004 Book of the Year by the Conference on Christianity and Literature. The au thor of three books of poems, Jellema also is the recipient of the Hart Crane Memorial Award and a National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Prize.

14414 Literature and Scripture: An "Impossible Filiation" Miller, J.Hillis 10/18/2007 Renowned literary scholar, prolific theorist and critic, J. Hillis Miller earned fame in the eighties as one of the four "Yale School" critics, a group largely re sponsible for introducing deconstruction to American literary studies.
This lecture discusses the relation between literature and Scripture by way of what Derrida says about “impossible filiation.” Miller will take Beloved and The Divine Comedy as examples of literature and the Abraham and Isaac story and the Mary Magdalene story at the end of Luke (recognition of the risen Christ) as examples of Scriptural stories. Miller will claim they make quite different claims on the reader's allegi ance, but that Western literature, even the most secular, inherits essential things from Scripture. Miller will conclude by discussing the so-called “turn to religion” in the humanities today from the perspective of a long career that has seen fads come and go, and religion relocate in university life.
