14284 Developing an Incarnational Model of Scripture Enns, Peter 4/23/2007 Peter E. Enns, Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Hermeneutics at Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside, PA will lecture on "Developing An Incarnational Mod el For Scripture." Christianity is an historical faith, and its Scriptures beg to be understood in their historical contexts. The historical study of the Bible, however, can pose challenges for evangelicals since such study accents Scripture's " humanity." An incarnational approach to Scripture (one that affirms the necessity of Scripture's divine and human dimensions, as one affirms the human and divine dimensions of Christ) is a very helpful theological model for addressing the challenges posed by "Scripture in context." It is also a model that has ample precedent in Reformed thought, even if it has not been applied as rigorously as it could have been. This lecture will be held on Monday, April 23 at 3:30 pm in the Chapel Undercr oft. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

14471 German Calvinism in Crisis: The Heidelberg Conflict Over Church Discipline 1568-1571 Gunnoe, Charles 11/15/2007 The "Second Reformation" of Reformed Protestantism in the Holy Roman Empire took a bold step forward with the Electoral Palatinate's publication of the Heidelberg Catechism in 1563. The productive collaboration among Calvinists, Zwinglians, and Melanchthonian Lutherans that the catechism represented proved short lived, however, as the Heidelberg intellectual community exploded in conflict over the question of churc h discipline and the church's relationship with a Christian sovereign. Ultimately a modified Calvinist conception of church discipline prevailed in the Palatinate, due both the persuasive abilities of the Heidelberg Calvinists and the fact that the " Anti-disciplinist" faction had become discredited when some of its leading members were revealed to be Antitrinitarians. 14433 Between Nature and Nationality: The Hague School in the Nineteenth Century: Panel Discussion Bratt, James; Hanson, Craig; Luttikhuizen, Henry; VanArragon, Lisa 10/24/2007 Panel Discussion with Exhibition Catalog Essayists James Bratt, Craig Hanson, Henry Luttikhuizen, Lisa VanArragon, for
"Between Nature and Nationality: The Hague Sc hool in the Nineteenth Century," presented in the Center Art Gallery at Calvin College from October 5 - November 17.
In the 1870's, a group of Dutch artists began to gather and work alongside each other in and around The Hague. The earliest memb ers of the group included Jozef Israëls, Jacob Maris, Anton Mauve and H. W. Mesdag, and collectively they and their colleagues came to be identified with the city. The 'Hague School' label was appropriate since the surrounding landscape and shoreline , together with the rural population who worked the fields and sea, provided the subjects for most of the pictures produced by these artists over the final few decades of the nineteenth century.
