14046 Testimonies: The Stories of the Christian Life: Despair, Presumption, and Hope Jacobs, Alan 11/8/2006 "Despair, Presumption, and Hope"
This second lecture explores the pitfalls of both memory and imagination, the constant temptations to assign false meanings to the stories of our lives: to discern unreasonably comforting narratives, or to write for oneself a false tragedy, or to fail to discern any narrative at all. We will conclude with a meditation on hope as, so to speak, the narrative virtue--the virtue that enables us to tell the right stories about our lives and to tell them wisely, for our benefit and that of our fellow Christians.

14045 Testimonies: The Stories of the Christian Life. Looking Before and After Jacobs, Alan 11/7/2006 "Looking Before and After"
The theme of the first lecture is retrospection and prospection: looking back into the past in order to make sense of experience and projecting oneself forward into a future. The faculties of memory and imagination are crucial to the Christian life, but individual Christians, and Christian communities of faith, do not think often enough about the disciplines and virtues necessary to th e proper exercise of those faculties.

14647 Writing About Sin for People Whose Consciences are Clear Jacobs, Alan 4/18/2008 Writing about sin may be easy enough, we all have plenty of experience to draw on, but original sin is a more challenging topic, especially for people who find the doctrine deeply and personally offensive. 14667 To Try and Try Again Jacobs, Alan; Finch, Robert 4/18/2008 The definition of an essay is "to try or attempt." Two essayists discuss what they attempt to do in their essays and why the effort is worthwhile. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.
Festival of Faith & Writing, 2008
14126 Love Your Neightborhood Jacobsen, Eric 1/26/2007 Some congregations think too little of their buildings, and see the walls and property boundaries as containers of square footage for program and parking spaces for cars. Ot her congregations think too much of their buildings, seeing them as iconic sculptures bearing witness to beliefs and values in contradistinction to those of the surrounding community. In contrast to these views, this session will explore a church building as being part of and contributing to the neighborhood that surrounds it. We'll explore how a building connects to a neighborhood in terms of scale and style, helping to shape the public realm, and how threshold points operate between the church and the p ublic.

12632 Leaving Room for Fascination Jellema, Rod 4/12/2005 [This recording is not available]
The 16th annual Wiersma Memorial Lecture brings an alumnus back to the Calvin College campus who is familiar to the college not only as a poet, but also as a friend of the late Stanley Wiersma (the Calvin English professor for whom the series is named).
Rod Jellema, emeritus professor of English at the University of Maryland and founder of that school's creative writing program, del ivered the lecture, speaking and reading from his poetry.
A 1951 Calvin graduate (as was Wiersma) Jellema is a poet whose latest volume, A Slender Grace: Poems, was named 2004 Book of the Year by the Conference on Christianity and Literature. The au thor of three books of poems, Jellema also is the recipient of the Hart Crane Memorial Award and a National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Prize.

13609 Reading the Bible in the Global South Jenkins, Philip 1/12/2006 Distinguished Professor of History and Religious Studies at Pennsylvania State University, Phillip Jenkins is the author of many books including "The Next Christendom: The Rise of Global Christianity" and "Hidden Gospels: How the Search for Jesus Lost Its Way". In "The Next Christendom" and in his presentation on The January Series, Jenkins will discuss the ways the Bible is read in the churches of the global South - in Africa and Asia - and how those readings reveal a deep estrangement between the dominant forms of Chirstianity in the global North and South. He states that Southern churches are using the Bible with a freshness and authenticity that simply cannot be achieved by the prosperous societies of the global North.

14708 Religious Heritage of Rights Talk: A Symposium, The John Witte, Jr.; Wolderstroff, Nicholas 3/31/2008 Is religion opposed to rights? Does justice require curbing religious influence? Both popular and academic discussions of human rights tend to see religion as a threat. Th us 'enlightened' secularists are still given to alarmist accounts of how religious traditions squelch civil rights, or how confessional communities trample over human rights claims. On this account, only 'secular' democracy can secure justice, often preci sely against the claims of religion.
But this version of the story has been called into question by recent research. Two internationally-acclaimed scholars have a very different story to tell. John Witte, Jr., Robitscher Professor of Law and Direct or of the Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University, will discuss the roots and origins of a modern account of human rights in early modern Calvinism. And Nicholas Wolterstorff, Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology Emeritus a t Yale, will dig back even further, arguing that modern intuitions about rights and justice are indebted to the Hebrew and Christian scriptures-and cannot be sustained by a wholly secular ethos.
