3290 Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation Kozol, Jonathan 1/22/1997 Jonathan Kozol has spent much of his life talking and listening to children and giving voice to their struggles and hardships through his writing. His first book, Death at an Early Age, a description of his fourth-grade teaching experience in a segregated Boston classroom, was published in 1967 and received the National Book Award in Science, Philosophy, and Religion. In his latest book, Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation, Dr. Kozol writes with compelling sensitivity about the children and their families who live in the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district of our nation, and how they find the strength to prevail in the face of vio lence, poverty, and racial isolation. 179 Voyage of the Diligent, The Harms, Robert 1/17/2000 The 15-month voyage of the slave ship "The Diligent" from France to West Africa and then to the Caribbean is described in a journal kept by the ship's 26-year-old First Lieutenant. In studying this journal and related materials, Robert Harms, Professor of History at Yale University, deals not only with the Americas as recipient of slaves but also with Africa as the supplier. He further explains justification among Europeans in the buying and selling of people because of the indispensable need for their services in the cultivation of sugar, tobacco, indigo and other crops. Using slides of maps, drawings and documents, Dr. Harms explores the ideas, practices and pers onalities that animated the slave trade and shaped the emerging Atlantic world in the 18th century. Incoporating such texts as oral history, poetry, memoirs, speeches, journalistic accounts, and music, this original production serves as a living and lasting expression of Christian Reformed tradition and the story of Calvin College within this tradition. 183 Jefferson's Legacy: A Call to Civic Responsibility Rimel, Rebecca 1/24/2000 In 1948, when The Pew Charitable Trusts was established, grantmaking was closer to a personal act of charity. Today's world has greater needs, tougher problems and more comp etition for resources. Grantmaking, accordingly, is closer to a strategic investment with the return measured not in profits, but in long-lasting, positive and powerful results. One result the Trust seeks is the greater engagement of Americans in the civi c process of democracy. Rebecca Rimel is president and chief executive officer for The Pew Charitable Trusts. The Trusts, with more than $4.7 billion in assets, invested more than $213 million in 298 nonprofit organizations in 1998. Heritage Hall : Available for sale. Heritage Hall : Available for sale. 182 Death: Enemy or Friend? Meilaender, Gilbert 1/20/2000 Since for humans to have life means to know that death is inevitable, learning how to die is a lesson we all must learn. In this endeavor our culture gives us conflicting si gnals about our dying. On the one hand, death is understood to be an enemy of our control over our fate, and is, therefore, an indignity; and on the other hand, death is understood as a natural part of life, a friend whose coming we should embrace. This p resentation deals with the tension between death as friend and death as foe from the perspectives of the narratives of dying patients, providing insights on learning to "die well." Dr. Meilaender holds the Board of Directors Chair in Christian E thics at Valparaiso University. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Religious Ethics. Heritage Hall : Available for sale. 181 Balkans: Tragedy in Perspective Meyer, Steven 1/19/2000 Since the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1992, tragedy has plagued the Balkans. Ethnic hatred and the violence it produces are the most deadly forces at work in this part of Euro pe today. But this has not always been so. Misunderstanding of Balkan ethnicity exacerbates the tragedy and prevents us from playing a truly positive role in that melancholy land. Dr. Meyer addresses our inability to cope with the fact that the forces dri ving the post-Cold War world are fundamentally different from those that drove the Cold War. Dr. Meyer is with the Central Intelligence Agency. As part of that role he is a professor at National Defense University, Industrial College of the Armed Forces i n Washington, D.C. 180 Faith and Science Plantinga, Alvin 1/18/2000 While modern empirical science arose within the bosom of the Christian faith, the relationship between Christianity and science has been marked by as much conflict as concor d. At times, what is proposed as serious science seems to be flatly inconsistent with the Christian faith. This lecture looks into this type of conflict and Dr. Plantinga argues that typically these conflicts ought not to occasion fear and trepidation on the part of Christians. Dr. Plantinga is a founding member of the Society of Christian Philosophers. He taught philosophy at Calvin College for 19 years. In 1982, he was appointed to the John O'Brien Professor of Philosophy and Director for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame. Heritage Hall : Available for sale. He maintains that too much real estate and emotion have been invested in athletics at American academic institutions. By ignoring the serious cultural effect of athletics, particularly in schools, he believes we jeopardize our academic future. Heritage Hall : Available for sale. Heritage Hall : Available for sale. 178 Music of God and the God of Music, The Begbie, Jeremy 1/14/2000 What has music to do with God? Why do so many people turn to music for "spiritual" refreshment, using music from New Age to trip-hop to medieval chant? This presen tation explores some of the ways in which music works in our lives and offers reasons why music so often brings people closer to God. Slides, recorded music and demonstrations at the piano assist in answering the question of what music has to do with God. Jeremy Begbie is a widely published author, a noted performer of Mozart and is Vice Principal of Ridley Hall, Cambridge, England, and Lecturer of the Faculty of Divinity, Cambridge University. Her reporting and analysis are especially enlightening during political campaigns. Each election year, Ms. Liasson gives perceptive analysis of candidates' positions, listening to both what a candidate has said and reading between the lines about what has not been said. In 1997, L iasson joined Fox News Channel's public affairs program, Fox News Sunday, as a regular panelist. 10182 Valentina Lisitsa & Alexei Kuznetsoff Lisitsa, Valentina; Kuznetsoff, Alexei 1/26/2000 Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff make beautifully nuanced music with two pianos, raising the phenomenon of multiple pianos above gimmickry to artistry. When they met at the Kiev Conse rvatory, they each had already won both national and international recognition in solo piano and chamber music competitions. When this Ukrainian piano duo exploded onto the American musical scene in their formal debut in Miami in 1991, their flawless ense mble and unified musicianship captured the enthusiasm of audience and critics alike. Last year's appearance on The January Series was part of a 29-city tour. They are back this year by popular demand. Technical Services : Not Available for sale. None : Not Available for sale. 10792 Dietrich Bonhoeffer On Lying - Reflections on America Hauerwas, Stanley 1/15/2003 Described as "contemporary theology’s foremost intellectual provocateur," Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at the Divinity S chool of Duke University, has been named America’s Best Theologian by Time Magazine. The intent of his work is to show in what way theological convictions make no sense unless they are actually embodied in our lives. Referring to the work of Dietric h Bonhoeffer, who wrote that “it is worse for a liar to tell the truth than for a lover of truth to lie, Hauerwas will reflect on Bonhoeffer’s view of America and truth. This presentation is an attempt to prove that what Christians owe any pol itics in which they find themselves is first and foremost to be a people who want not only to hear the truth but to speak it. 10801 Axis of History, The: The Middle East After September 11 Krauthammer, Charles 1/27/2003 For the last 500 years the cockpit of world history has been Europe. Not anymore; today it is the Near East. War in Afghanistan, rumors of war in Iraq, conflict between Isra el and the Palestinians will determine the course of the great issues of our time: terrorism, energy supplies, the spread of democracy, prospects for peace. Charles Krauthammer, a Pulitzer Prize winning syndicated columnist and a regular weekly panelist o n Inside Washington, contends that September 11 woke us from a decade-long holiday from history, during which time we conducted a bubble diplomacy to parallel our bubble economy. The bubble burst on September 11, 2001. There is now a new world to build. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale. Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research January Series, 2003

10799 What St. Paul Really Said Wright, N.T. (Tom) 1/23/2003 Paul was a zealous Jew whose explosive meeting with Jesus led him to believe that Israel’s God had declared Jesus to be the Messiah, and hence the true Lord of the who le world. N.T. Wright, Canon Theologian of Westminster Abbey and author of What St. Paul Really Said, determines the best way to understand Paul 20 centuries later. He will explain that Paul’s commission to be the “apostle to the Gentiles̶ 1; led him to hammer out a theology that was essentially a Jewish message for the pagan world, reshaped around Jesus, energized by the Spirit, and taking shape as a deeply personal and political message. Rediscovering his complex but breathtaking vision o f God, the world and the gospel is a central element in the urgent tasks facing today’s church. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale. The average American is exposed to more than 3,000 ads a day all of which encourage us to develop a relations hip with things. Whether it’s the ice cream that comforts us, the nail polish that makes us feel wild or the car that carries us away from it all, products promise that they can be trusted when people let us down. But the assurance of advertising le aves us hungry and unsatisfied because the products we love can’t love us back. Jean Kilbourne, internationally recognized for her pioneering work on advertising and author of Can’t Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Fee l, paints a gripping portrait of how this barrage of advertising corrupts relationships and feeds an addictive mentality.

10796 In Celebration of Martin Luther King Day, Creative Justice Skillen, James 1/20/2003 Where is justice to be found? Must we resign ourselves to the all-too-human patterns of oppression and murderous destruction? James Skillen, president of the Center for Publ ic Justice in Washington D.C., answers that with a resounding, “No.” Skillen will emphasize that we have all been created in the image of God. The deepest import of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s movement extends beyond opposition to racism t o the achievement of human dignity for every person. Likewise, Skillen contends, it is only in the Creator and Redeemer of humanity that we can find the hope that dissolves despair, the power to overcome hatred, the love to bind ourselves to one another a nd the confidence that justice will be established. Indeed, the U.S.A. is the only country o f consequence in which it is possible to go from kindergarten through graduate school without ever having taking a course in geography. As a result, political leaders have embarrassed themselves and their country in foreign settings; members of the govern ment have misled the country in disastrous foreign-policy campaigns. Additionally, an inadequately educated public is in no position to make its views count. 10787 Habits of the High-Tech Heart:
Living Virtuously in the Information Age
Schultze, Quentin 1/8/2003 "Technological progress invariably produces moral quandaries," says Dr. Quentin Schultze in his highly acclaimed new book, Habits of the High-Tech Heart: Living Vi rtuously in the Information Age. Hardly at Luddite, the Calvin College professor of communication entered cyberspace nearly 20 years ago, and helped launch in the 1995 the most popular religious website in the world: www.gospelcom.net. He now fears that t he unmitigated explosion in "instant communication" is unraveling the moral fabric of society. People are losing their capacity to listen respectfully and to speak clearly and honestly. He argues that we don’t need more streaming text on T V talk shows and news broadcasts, more blaring television monitors in airports or more unsolicited emails. Instead we should seek virtues, such as wisdom, moderation, authenticity and discernment. Otherwise we will become a nation of high-tech fools. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale. 11743 Music, Emotion, and Worship: Is There Anything to Fear? Begbie, Jeremy 1/9/2004 In today’s culture, more than ever before, music is used to move us emotionally - on TV and in movies, shopping malls and restaurants. From the ancient Greeks to the r ecent Taliban regime, many have feared this profound power of music. In the Christian Church the anxiety has often been intense, especially in worship where music plays such a prominent role, and where some suspect they are being manipulated. Using perfor mance, slides and recorded music, Jeremy Begbie, noted author, professor and associate director of the Institute for Theology, Imagination and the Arts at St. Mary’s College of St. Andrews University in Scotland, asks, “In worship, what, if an ything, have we to fear from music’s emotional power?” Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research January Series, 2004
11741 Moral Crisis of the Telecosm, The Gilder, George 1/7/2004 The many telecom bankruptcies of the last two years are often ascribed to greed and graft. Yet many of the leaders of the industry, such as Bernie Ebbers of WorldCom, are ac tive and devout Christians. Are they hypocrites? Or is the story of the recent crash far more complex and intriguing than the press and courts have revealed? George Gilder, chairman of Gilder Publishing, LLC, editor of the Gilder Technology Report and aut hor of several books including the bestseller Wealth and Poverty, addresses the moral sources of the telecom crash and the new telecosmic revival now under way. 11742 Spiritual Pilgrimage in an Age of World Religions Woodward, Kenneth 1/8/2004 Christians have traditionally looked on this life as a pilgrimage to the next. Indeed, the idea that we all are embarked on a journey of faith has become a cliche in contemp orary homiletics, church hymns and even liturgies. But what does going on a pilgrimage mean in the context of the convergence of world religions so evident in our time? Are all religions basically the same thing in different packages? Have other religions something to teach Christians? Kenneth Woodward, longtime religion editor and senior writer for Newsweek, will explore these questions based on his professional experience of writing about world religions and his personal experience with religious leader s as diverse as Billy Graham and the Dalai Lama. In a number of countries, economics ruined by misgovernment are now growing again. Christianity, in many vibrant new expressions, is flou rishing in sub-Saharan Africa. 11746 After Billy Graham: The Future of American Protestantism Balmer, Randall 1/14/2004 As Protestants embark on the 21st century, they no longer enjoy the dominance they once held in North America. Changes to immigration laws have gradually altered the religio us landscape of the United States, but Protestantism in America faces internal crises as well, notably an appalling lack of leadership such as was provided for more than half a century by Billy Graham. Randall Balmer, the Ann Whitney Olin Professor of Ame rican Religion at Columbia University and senior writer for Christianity Today, has published widely and speaks frequently on religion in America. His lecture speculates on what lies ahead in a religious world without Billy Graham, a world where Baptists no longer behave like Baptists. 11750 Throw Away your Computer and Get an Education Stoll, Clifford 1/20/2004 Does knowledge of computers equal a good education and a good job? Think again! Despite pressures for campus internet feeds in every venue, a quality education has little to do with computer and everything to do with the human interplay between student, professor and the body of knowledge. Yes, computers make it easy to look up facts and impress us with flashy graphics but they also discourage creativity. They encourage us t o copy what we see or read rather than come up with our own ideas and conclusions. Clifford Stoll, a leading authority on computer security and noted author, questions the dependency of the digital age. Are we better informed? Is our electorate more activ e? Are our citizens more involved in our communities? Has this revolution spawned more problems or solutions? Genetic determinism is shaping socio-ethnic policies and legislation around the world. But is that determining power omnipotent? Or are there other fa ctors and influences that need to be considered? 11753 How the Middle Class Remade Music Plantinga, Leon 1/23/2004 The fabled growth of the middle class in Europe in the later 18th century produced profound changes. Among them was a striking transformation in musical style. Radically dif ferent was the early 18th century career of J.S. Bach from his son’s in the latter part of the decade. The father was entirely dependent upon employment with the patronage system at court or church, while Johann Christian Bach addressed his effort, through opera, concerts and music publication, to an urban public, largely comprised of the new middle class. Leon Plantinga, Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music at Yale University, will demonstrate this complete metamorphosis in musical style t hrough recorded examples and live performance that should not be missed. Missing from the debate is awareness of a thick but silent trend toward genuine Islamic reformation that is growing across the Muslim world. In fact, ho mileticians see much that is admirable and attractive in black preaching. If studied for more than its cosmetic effects of style and delivery, or its more widely known feature of celebration, black preaching has something of note to contribute to traditio nal homiletics in the 21st century. Cleophus J. LaRue, Princeton Seminary’s Francis Landey Patton Associate Professor of Homiletics, specializes in the theory and method of African American preaching. Ironically, this era g ave birth to new visions of moral and political possibilities: total war, totalitarianism and the Holocaust. This madness presented a historic opportunity to advance an alternative vision of human rationality. We missed this opportunity. On September 11, 2001, unbelievable human tragedy gave way to an exceptional historic opportunity to bear witness to this age.
