12602 I Know, It's Only Rock and Roll, But God Likes It, Likes It, Yes He Does, Doesn't He? Pedulla, Albert 4/1/2005 Not only is there a theological rationale for Christians to engage in the arts and music, but there is a Biblical mandate. In this session Pedulla invites participants to co nsider the innate human need for symbols, stories and the arts by exploring a basic theology of the arts and how the scriptures show us that we need art not only to be whole, but to understand the fullness of God's character. Participants will also listen to a couple great rock and roll tunes that might have something to say to us (and that Pedulla thinks God might like). Bookstore (college) : Available for sale.

So how does the writer for middle-grade and young-adult readers adapt his or her past to a narrative set in a different time period and to readers who are unfamiliar with both the author and the historical past? And what ethical implications do such uses carry, particularly when they involve issues of faith an d meaning? Bookstore (college) : Available for sale.

14333 I Was Glad...A Call to Worship

The Christian Reformed Church has been on it's pilgrimage for 150 years. So much has changed during this time: the ways we dress, the languages we speak, the places we live .

But one constant of our pilgrimage is our worship together. Each week, since 1857, we Christian Reformed believers have gathered on Sunday for worship in the Reformed tradition.

This year we celebrate God's grace through every generat ion. We remember how far our pilgrimage has come, how God has guided our steps, offered grace for our mis-steps, and how God's guidance leads the way for the steps that lie ahead.

#106 IMAGES OF CHRIST What image forms in your mind when you picture Jesus Christ? Can you think of where this scene came from? Chances are, an artist named Warner Sallman may have influenced what you're picturing. There are over 1 billion reproductions of his drawings of Christ. Half of those have been of one particular portrait of a serene blonde man. Our conversation with David Morgan of the Valparaiso University art dep artment covers the evolution of religious popular art in America, and how culture and marketing influence our perceptions of God.

14492 Imaginative Reading for Creative Preaching Gloer, W. Hulitt; Plantinga, Jr., Cornelius J. 1/25/2008 People often assume that preachers who read widely are on the prowl for illustrations. These people are right. Preachers are hunter-gatherers, searching not only the world&# 8217;s literary masterworks but also contemporary fiction, journalism, and biography. But preachers are not merely in search of useful stories. Reading deepens the preacher’s knowledge of human cries of the heart. In fact, the preacher’s readi ng deepens preaching because it deepens the preacher. In this workshop, Neal Plantinga and Hulitt Gloer will discuss their highly successful "Imaginative Reading for Creative Preaching" seminar, which the two have co-led the last five years as a multi-week summer program. This workshop will help participants begin to explore the possibilities and homiletical impact of engaging in an ongoing, vigorous program of reading for preaching. 14504 Imagine . . . What has Christ Done for Us? Ryan, Paul 1/25/2008 How do Christ’s life, death, and resurrection save us? What poetic imagination do we use to grasp his saving work? Scattered throughout our hymns, prayers, and liturgi es are metaphors used to comprehend and express Christ’s atonement. But so often we limit our experience to just one or two images. In this workshop we will survey five images of the atonement and explore how we might more fully celebrate how salvat ion comes through Jesus Christ. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

10796 In Celebration of Martin Luther King Day, Creative Justice Skillen, James 1/20/2003 Where is justice to be found? Must we resign ourselves to the all-too-human patterns of oppression and murderous destruction? James Skillen, president of the Center for Publ ic Justice in Washington D.C., answers that with a resounding, “No.” Skillen will emphasize that we have all been created in the image of God. The deepest import of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s movement extends beyond opposition to racism t o the achievement of human dignity for every person. Likewise, Skillen contends, it is only in the Creator and Redeemer of humanity that we can find the hope that dissolves despair, the power to overcome hatred, the love to bind ourselves to one another a nd the confidence that justice will be established. This will be a true celebration of the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale. Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research January Series, 2003

10714 In Search of the Cross-Cultural Church Matias, John
#122 IN SEARCH OF THE CROSS-CULTURAL CHURCH
The idea of a neighborhood church is becoming a charming relic. Nowadays, worshippers drive all around until they find a chur ch where they feel the most comfortable. But this has lead to homogeneous churches where anyone different feels out of place. Should church be like home, or a place where we stretch to build new friendships? Should we be dissatisfied with a congregation t hat is only made of one ethnic group? Guest host June Hamersma discusses these questions with John Matias, pastor of City Hope CRC/RCA, and Reggie Smith, pastor of Roosevelt Park Community CRC.

15199 Interactions between Science and Philosophy: Newton on Space and Body Majeski, Carey James; Wykstra, Steve 10/17/2008 This talk presents some results of Carey James (C.J.) Majeski’s summer research project under Professor S. Wykstra, funded by a McGregor fellowship. C.J. describes so me aspects of the collaborative research experience, with some reflections on how Christian faith and academic research interact. He introduces a key selection from "On Gravity and the Equilibrium of Fluids" by Isaac Newton . It shows a strong p hilosophical side of Newton’s thought, in which his theological commitments seem to actively inform--in some surprising ways--the conceptual foundations of his physics, both in his treatment of the concept of space and of material body. 14521 Intergenerational Worship: Is It Reasonable? Is It Possible? Vanderwell, Howard 1/25/2008 Many churches are asking whether they can really keep all generations working together, or whether it would be better to separate the generations according to their preferen ces in worship. Some voices suggest separation. Other churches with limited resources wonder if they are inferior because they have no choice in the matter. Several contributors to the recent book The Church of All Ages: Generations Worshiping Together wi ll explore the issues involved, highlight some of the findings, and stimulate your further reflection on the matter. 13555 Interview and Q & A with Rev. Davis Davis, David 10/13/2005 This day-long conference explored the
corporate nature of the preaching event. While
in most cases just one person stands to preach,
preaching still belongs to the whole church.
Preaching is to be understood as an ongoing
conversation. Preachers never have the first
word nor the last word. Though one person
speaks, the voice of the listener shares in the
construction of meaning.
As the preaching ev ent is placed within a more
complex understanding of communication,
conference participants will be invited to
ponder why preaching every week can make
preaching easier, the nature of the relationship
of preaching to the liturgy and sacrame nts, and
also the multiple dialogues that contribute to
the experience of any one sermon.
This conference explored some well-known topics
in preaching such as sermon form, the use of
illustration, the importance of language, and
narrativ e preaching. All these are considered
in the light of the voice of the listener.

14038 Is There Purpose in the Living World? Some Thoughts about Creation and Emergent Evolution Klapwijk, Jaap 9/15/2006 Jaap Klapwijk is from the Free University in Amsterdam.
"I feel it is objectionable to say that God created through evolution, but we can say that God created a world that is characterized by evolution. In such an evolutionary world, full of chance variations and natural selection, is there place for a purpose? Evolution implies an element of continuity and of discontinuity. To understand this, the notion of e mergent evolution is helpful. In an evolutionary development there is not just a continuous line. Phenomena with an element of discontinuity and irreducible newness can emerge. Life, for instance, is a phenomenon that emerges at a new organizational lev el: a biotic level. But in the living world we can also speak of a vegetative, a sensitive and a mental level. These levels are idionomous, i.e. each is governed by special laws that, in some way, represent God's creation ordinances. Evolution is not w ithout chance and randomness. But in so far as it is embedded in a hierarchy of organizational levels and oriented to divine laws it is directional, and we might speak of purpose in the living world."

11754 Islamic Reformation: An Overdue Quest Ibrahim, Saad Eddin 1/26/2004 Much of the debate on Islam and the West has concentrated on militant hard-line Islamists. This small minority of political actors has “hijacked” perceptions of one of the great monotheistic religions. Missing from the debate is awareness of a thick but silent trend toward genuine Islamic reformation that is growing across the Muslim world. Saad Eddin Ibrahim will present the features of this important trend in I slamic reformation and attempt to draw attention to other aspects of a rich and varied religious mosaic. Ibrahim, a world-renowned sociologist and advocate of democracy and human rights, is the director of the Ibn Khaldun Center for Development Studies in Egypt. He was jailed and later acquitted - after garnering tremendous international attention - of charges denounced as politically motivated.
