10867 Habits of the High-Tech Heart: Living Virtuously in the Information Age Schultze, Quentin 1/10/2003 In his book by the same title (Baker, 2002), Schultze wrote, "Technological progress invariably produces moral quandaries." He fears that the unmitigated explosion in "instant communication" is unraveling the moral fabric of society. People are losing their capacity to listen respectfully and to speak clearly and honestly. We should seek virtues--wisdom, moderation, authenticity, and discernment; otherwis e we will become a nation of high-tech fools. None : Not Available for sale.

10787 Habits of the High-Tech Heart:
Living Virtuously in the Information Age
Schultze, Quentin 1/8/2003 "Technological progress invariably produces moral quandaries," says Dr. Quentin Schultze in his highly acclaimed new book, Habits of the High-Tech Heart: Living Vi rtuously in the Information Age. Hardly at Luddite, the Calvin College professor of communication entered cyberspace nearly 20 years ago, and helped launch in the 1995 the most popular religious website in the world: www.gospelcom.net. He now fears that t he unmitigated explosion in "instant communication" is unraveling the moral fabric of society. People are losing their capacity to listen respectfully and to speak clearly and honestly. He argues that we don’t need more streaming text on T V talk shows and news broadcasts, more blaring television monitors in airports or more unsolicited emails. Instead we should seek virtues, such as wisdom, moderation, authenticity and discernment. Otherwise we will become a nation of high-tech fools. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale. 14139 Healthy Tensions in Corporate Worship Kauflin, Bob 1/26/2007 What should preachers keep in mind in composing sermons? Toward what sermonic goals should they aspire? What evaluative categories can church members become aware of to dial ogue more meaningfully with their pastors (and with one another) about the preaching life of the church? This session will hold up the rubrics "Biblical, Authentic, Contextual, and Life-Changing" as goals for preachers and as helpful categories for congregations to use in discussing sermons. When pastors and church members come to a common understanding of what preaching should be, possibilities for helpful conversations begin across the life of the congregation, to the mutual benefit of all!

11755 Heart of Black Preaching, The La Rue, Cleophus 1/27/2004 Though far from perfect, black preaching is regarded in many circles as the most vibrant, imaginative and communicatively effective preaching on the scene today. In fact, ho mileticians see much that is admirable and attractive in black preaching. If studied for more than its cosmetic effects of style and delivery, or its more widely known feature of celebration, black preaching has something of note to contribute to traditio nal homiletics in the 21st century. Cleophus J. LaRue, Princeton Seminary’s Francis Landey Patton Associate Professor of Homiletics, specializes in the theory and method of African American preaching. He will address the need for appreciation of and understanding between all homiletic traditions to make for stronger preachers, irrespective of ethnicity, gender, regional differences and denominational ties. 10722 Hebrew Bible or Old Testament? Kugel, James; Van Liere, Frans
#208 HEBREW BIBLE OR OLD TESTAMENT? If Hebrew and Old Testament biblical scholars share so many of the same ancient texts, why is there so little collaboration? Especially since the scriptures that Christians inherited from the Jews were already so full of interpretation and commentary! James Kugel of Harvard and Bar Ilan Universities and Frans van Liere of Calvin's history department discuss little-known collaborations of the past and ponder why they are so rare today.

New technological inventions offer exciting options for churches looking to update and streamline their worship services. If there’s enough mo ney in the budget, is that all we need to know? CAS professor Quentin Schultze, author of High-Tech Worship: Using Presentational Technologies Wisely, describes to host Shirley Hoogstra how a church can examine the fittingness of such changes for its wors hip service.

14506 Holy Spirit and Worship, The Avila, Mariano 1/25/2008 We will explore the biblical teaching on the central role that the Holy Spirit plays in worship. Dependence and freedom, order and spontaneity, reverent silence and joyful n oise will be some of the paradoxes we will explore in the framework of Scripture. Our purpose is to inform some of our present-day worship practices and enrich, challenge, and transform them for the glory of the Lord we worship. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

15035 Holy Spirit in Worship: Learning from the Reformed-Pentecostal Dialogue, The Chan, Simon; Daniels III, David D.; McDonald, Suzanne; Nyomi, Setri; Witvliet, John 1/29/2009 Many Christian traditions insist that the Holy Spirit is the main agent who makes worship possible. Yet this basic assertion is practiced in different ways in different trad itions and cultures, involving radically different emotional responses, modes of prayer, and approaches to planning and spontaneity. This session will feature a panel of speakers from both Reformed and Pentecostal traditions who will reflect on several y ears of dialogue and recent ecumenical statements about the Holy Spirit in worship. This tradition of dialogue and these recently published statements (which will be available to all participants prior to the session) offer a rich learning environment to more deeply understand and value the vital, life-giving work of the Holy Spirit in our worship.

11745 Hope for Africa Carpenter, Joel 1/13/2004 Famine, wars, AIDS, extreme poverty…this is the news we usually hear of Africa. But there is another side of the story. Even in some of the continent’s most vola tile regions there are reasons to be hopeful. Stability is now gaining in some nations that were once ravaged by war. In a number of countries, economics ruined by misgovernment are now growing again. Christianity, in many vibrant new expressions, is flou rishing in sub-Saharan Africa. Calvin College provost and history professor Joel Carpenter has traveled extensively in Africa and has worked with many African leaders in churches, government, education, healthcare and business. He presents the ideas, opin ions and vision of contemporary African leaders who have reasons to hope for their beloved continent. June Hamersma interviews Ira Byock, author of Dying Well: The Prospect for Growth at the End of L ife, and Dottie Deremo, President of Hospice of Michigan.

173 Hour with Terry Gross, An Gross, Terry 1/7/2000 For a breath of Fresh Air, tune in daily to National Public Radio for Terry Gross's popular interview program of that name. In this January Series presentation, hear how Ms. Gross brings her guests to reveal what makes them tick through her insightful questioning. She has even been known to push guests in unlikely directions resulting, from time to time, in "walk-offs" offended by her direct questioning. Terry Gros s talks about her techniques for good interviews and tells a bit about who she is and why she does what she does. She also presents her views on why the media is the way it is and where the media and our national dialogue are headed. Heritage Hall : Not Available for sale. Heritage Hall : Not Available for sale. 10696 How About Harry Potter? Ehlers, Marla; Liebenthal, Ed; Weaver, Karen
#104 HOW ABOUT HARRY POTTER? Most children need help choosing a diet that will make their bodies grow strong; do they need similar guidance in choosing food for their minds ? Although the commotion about the Harry Potter books has died down, the ethical questions remain about the responsibilities adults have regarding what children read. How can they guide children to make wise decisions? This week's episode of Inner Compass features Karen Weaver of Jenison Junior High, children's librarian Marla Ehlers, and parent/school board member Ed Liebenthal.

14135 How Prison Ministry is Transforming the Church and it's Worship Schuringa, David 1/26/2007 The church is engaging in ministry to prisoners as never before. Due to skyrocketing recidivism rates (75% of released inmates will return to crime within five years), it is blatantly obvious that our correctional centers do not correct and our reformatories do not reform. This societal crisis of enormous proportions has led to the emergence of the Restorative Justice movement as a way to repair the criminal justice system a nd to facilitate restoration and healing in collapsing communities. Along the way, however, it has become evident that prison ministry is having a profound impact upon the life of the church and that the principles of Restorative Justice are not only for offenders and victims, but for anyone to live all of life as worship.

11753 How the Middle Class Remade Music Plantinga, Leon 1/23/2004 The fabled growth of the middle class in Europe in the later 18th century produced profound changes. Among them was a striking transformation in musical style. Radically dif ferent was the early 18th century career of J.S. Bach from his son’s in the latter part of the decade. The father was entirely dependent upon employment with the patronage system at court or church, while Johann Christian Bach addressed his effort, through opera, concerts and music publication, to an urban public, largely comprised of the new middle class. Leon Plantinga, Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music at Yale University, will demonstrate this complete metamorphosis in musical style t hrough recorded examples and live performance that should not be missed. 14040 Human Origins: Scientific Theories and Christian Theologies Cooper, John 10/27/2006 John Cooper, Professor of Philosophical Theology, Calvin Theological Seminary.
"This presentation attempts a general mapping of the various positions on creation and evolution held by Christians. It identifies three main readings of Genesis 1-3 (literal-historical-theological, literary-historical-theological, and literary-theological), three main theological paradigms of redemptive-history (Augustinian, Neo-plat onic, and Modernist), and four theories of human origins (recent creation, progressive creation, biological evolution, anthropological evolution). The presentation then explores the implications, convergences, and tensions among these positions. This is the overview I present to students at Calvin Seminary before locating the position taken by the Synod of the Christian Reformed Church. Dialogue and criticism are welcome."

10790 Human Stem-Cell Research: Where Do We Go From Here? Hughes, Mark 1/13/2003 A worldwide argument is brewing that pits the benefits of genetics research against its potential misuse. For Dr. Mark Hughes, the benefits clearly come out on top. Known fo r his pioneering work in embryo diagnosis, Hughes has found himself in the middle of a heated battle between science and ethics. “Technology often drives science, science drives medicine, and medicine is always pushing society into ethical corners,& #8221; says Hughes. Stem cell research is another aspect of science that is at the center of the debate. Diseases that might be treated by transplanting cells generated from human embryonic stem cells include Parkinson's disease, diabetes, traumatic spina l cord injury and heart disease. Hughes will discuss the promising yet troubling technology and where it might lead in the future. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale. 14633 Hymnwriting as Devotional Poetry Bringle, Mary Louise 4/17/2008 While hymn poems are primarily written to be sung, they are also written to be read, studied, and prayed. Good hymn texts deepen our understanding of God, touching both our hearts and our imaginations in ways that encourage, indict, inspire, and heal. Bringle looks at ways to use the reading and writing of hymn texts as forms of spiritual discipline and devotional practice. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.
