15021 Creation, Design, Evolution, and Human Origins Haarsma, Deborah; Haarsma, Loren 1/13/2009 Professors of Physics and Astronomy at Calvin College. Deborah, with a Ph.D from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, researches galaxies and cosmology; and Loren, with a Ph.D. from Harvard, studies electrical activity of nerve cells. Together, they have explored the science and theology of origins, speaking at numerous conferences, colleges and churches. In their book "Origins" they explore what both God's Word and God's world teach us about creation, the age of the earth, evolution, and intelligent design. Some views on origins reject modern science while others reject Christian theology, but there is a range of views that take both seriously. The Haarsmas summ arize areas where Christians agree, while sympathetically presenting the strengths and weaknesses of positions where Christians disagree. 16720 Science, Preaching, and the Church Haarsma, Deborah; Hoezee, Scott 1/28/2011 We believe God is sovereign over the natural world, including the amazing things discovered by modern science. Christians have readily accepted the technological and medical benefits of modern science but have often ignored or rejected other scientific developments. In this workshop Deborah Haarsma will give a case study of Christian responses to the science of origins, including young earth creationism, intelligent design, and theistic evolution. Scott Hoezee will discuss how the church can have a broader and more positive engagement with the scientific disciplines in sermons, worship, and the life of the church.

16865 Scientific and Theological Issues on Human Origins Haarsma, Loren 10/8/2010 This is the first of what we hope will be a series of seminars this year by various speakers on the topic of human origins. We will first summarize discoveries made in the l ast few decades in genetics and paleontology, and discuss what we can learn from these discoveries about how God created humans. Then we'll survey main points of Christian tradition on a number of important theological topics: humans as God's image-bearer s, the human soul, original sin, and natural evil. We'll describe several proposed scenarios for human origins which seek to bring together what we learn both from scripture and from nature, and we'll analyze some of the pros and cons of those scenarios. The goal of this seminar is to map out the important issues, the areas of agreement, and the range of disagreements. Audience questions and suggestions will influence which particular issues we explore in greater depth in later seminars. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

14169 Search for Extra-terrestrial Life, The Haarsma, Loren; Molnar, Larry 12/1/2006 As of now, there is no evidence of life beyond earth. But within the last decade, astronomers have discovered over a hundred planets in other solar systems, and they a re on the verge of being technically capable of detecting earth-like planets (if any exist) in nearby star systems. In this talk, we will review the current status of the search for extra-solar planets, as well as the search for life beyond earth in our own solar system. We'll also review current hypotheses, both scientific and theological, for how life first arose on earth. Then we'll turn to the question: If extraterrestrial life - even single-celled life – was discovered, what would be some o f the scientific and theological consequences? 13603 People, Pipes and Players Hamersma, John E. 1/4/2006 Do emotions have sound? How does a pipe organ work? How can it sound both like a rock concert and a flute? Why are some pipes the size of pencils while others are as tall as telephone poles?
John Hamersma speaks about the past and future of the organ, the "King of Instruments". This multi-sensory presentation is dynamic and, John assures us, not just "an old man talking about pipe organs"! This mu lti-media presentation is a collaboration of many talents including Daniel Garcia (from Calvin's Communications, Arts & Sciences Department) who is serving as executive director of the presentation and Carl Hordyk (from Calvin's Office of Conferences & Campus Events) who is serving as the technical director.
John retired in the spring of 2004 from his position at Calvin College as Professor of Music and College Organist after 50 years of teaching in the classroom and the organ studio, accomp anying worship on campus and performing. He is currently serving his 31st year as Organist/Choirmaster at Grace Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

16039 Horns of a Dilemma, The Hanson, Craig 11/9/2009 In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, discrepancies between the empirical evidence of single-horned rhinoceroses witnessed by Europeans and references from antiquity regarding double-horned rhinos perplexed members of the hollarRoyal Society, particularly the circle of physicians around Drs. Richard Mead and Hans Sloane. Three articles published in the Philosophical Transactions proposing solutions to the two-horned d ilemma and the kinds of evidence on which they depended raise crucial issues for the Royal Society during the period – antiquarian concerns tied to philology, numismatics, textual emendation, and collecting as well as the conceptual overlap between science, medical theory, and knowledge of the ancient world generally.

#201 VENGEANCE, RETRIBUTION, OR JUSTICE?
After the terrorist attacks in September, people were demanding justice, retribution, retaliatory strikes, revenge. Are the diffe rences between these words--tossed around so interchangeably in the news--subtle or important? And how does Just War Theory shed light on these ideas? James Skillen of the Center for Public Justice in Washington, D.C. and John Hare of Calvin's philosophy department consider these questions.

16867 Reading Genesis 2-3 in an Age of Evolutionary Science Harlow, Dan 11/5/2010 This presentation will summarize the main points of an article recently published in the journal Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith (vol. 62, no. 3 [September 2010] : 179–95) and then lead a discussion of it and of issues it raises. The article is framed by recent research in molecular biology, primatology, sociobiology, and phylogenetics––research which indicates that our species,Homo sapiens, did not descend from a single pair of individuals, and that early Homo sapiens did not start in paradisal physical or moral conditions. The body of the article is a study of Genesis 2–3 in its literary and cultural context, examining Adam and Eve as str ictly literary figures, with attention both to the biblical text and ancient Near Eastern parallels. Along the way, it explains why most biblical scholars do not find the doctrines of the Fall and original sin in Genesis 2–3 itself but only in later Christian readings of these chapters. The article also examines briefly Paul’s appeal to Adam as a type of Christ. It concludes that the doctrines of the Fall and original sin may be reaffirmed with Adam and Eve as literary rather than historical f igures, but invite reformulation given the evidence for an evolving creation.

In studying this journal and related materials, Robert Harms, Professor of History at Yale University, deals not only with the Americas as recipient of slaves but also with Africa as the supplier. He further explains justification among Europeans in the buying and selling of people because of the indispensable need for their services in the cultivation of sugar, tobacco, indigo and other crops. Using slides of maps, drawings and documents, Dr. Harms explores the ideas, practices and pers onalities that animated the slave trade and shaped the emerging Atlantic world in the 18th century. #108 PROBLEMS IN ASSISTING DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
Why do I hear developing countries need money, but also that rulers are getting rich from foreign donations? Ever wanted to support overseas development efforts, but don't know how to find organizations you can trust? What kinds of efforts are being made and how do people decide what is most needed? Hope to provide you with a better understanding as we talk with four peop le from the frontlines. They discuss their work in several countries, how to define true needs while honoring citizens' dignity, and what kinds of aid are the most beneficial and worthy of support. Ever wonder how to support overseas development efforts without streaming money directly into corrupt officials' bank accounts? What are NGOs and how do they decide where to direct their efforts? In this episode we talk with four NGO workers from various countries about what kinds of aid are the most benefici al.

10748 Is the Church Lying? Hauerwas, Stanley
#312 IS THE CHURCH LYING?
January Series guest Stanley Hauerwas of Duke University Divinity School claims that the American church is full of liars. He says whenever we ignore the truth in order to preserve harmony, we are allowing lies to prevail. What happened to the church's role as a signpost of God's truth, no matter what the cost? Using Dietrich Bonhoeffer's example, he challenges Christians to be much more though tful about what they are--and aren't--saying.

10792 Dietrich Bonhoeffer On Lying - Reflections on America Hauerwas, Stanley 1/15/2003 Described as "contemporary theology’s foremost intellectual provocateur," Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at the Divinity S chool of Duke University, has been named America’s Best Theologian by Time Magazine. The intent of his work is to show in what way theological convictions make no sense unless they are actually embodied in our lives. Referring to the work of Dietric h Bonhoeffer, who wrote that “it is worse for a liar to tell the truth than for a lover of truth to lie, Hauerwas will reflect on Bonhoeffer’s view of America and truth. This presentation is an attempt to prove that what Christians owe any pol itics in which they find themselves is first and foremost to be a people who want not only to hear the truth but to speak it. #102 WHAT IS CHRISTIAN MUSIC?
What if a Christian writes a song that doesn't mention God? Is it a Christian song? It's not always easy to identify the spiritual or lack o f it in music. And is the purpose of Christian music to honor God, to encourage Christians, or to entice non-Christians? Christian radio DJ Jake Ryan of WAY-FM in Grand Rapids, and Ken Heffner, Student Activities Director for Calvin College (who books vis iting concert tours), explain what each of them looks for in the Christian music they offer to thousands of listeners.

14438 Death is Different: Investigating Legal Defense in Death Penalty Sentencing Henderson, Stephen 11/15/2007 Detroit Free Press columnist Stephen Henderson spoke about his investigation of death penalty sentences. The Supreme Court has ruled that under the Sixth Amendment, even con victed murderers have a right to a vigorous defense when a jury is deciding whether or not to execute them. In a four-year investigation, Henderson--former Supreme Court correspondent for McClatchy News Service, now columnist and deputy editorial page edi tor for the Detroit Free Press--found that in some states defense lawyers regularly fail their clients, leading to unjust death sentences. 12517 Freeing God's Children: The Unlikely Alliance for Global Human Rights Hertzke, Allen 11/11/2004 Dr. Allen Hertzke, internationally recognized expert on religion and politics, as well as author, frequent news commentator and international lecturer, presented the 9th annual Paul B. Henry Lecture.
His recently published book by the same name provides a window into the changing religious landscape (in the United States and globally) as religious leaders focus attention on human rights concerns and form unlikely a lliances between religious organizations and other interest groups. Dr. Hertzke challenges the assumption that modernization in our world automatically leads to the secularization of society, asserting instead that in the face of global Christianity and r enewed activism, the role of faith in individuals' lives is leading in the opposite direction.

16713 Worship and Human Emotion Hielema, Syd 1/28/2011 Human emotion plays a profound role in Christian worship, but this role is very complex and easily misunderstood. What is the role of human emotion in our walk with God, and how do we as worship leaders obediently honour that role? What temptations to abuse emotion do we experience? How might we guide congregations to both emotional freedom and emotional maturity?

8718 Youth and Worship: The Place of the "Spiritual High" (B7) Hielema, Syd 1/12/2002 Part of adolescant spirituality is the craving for a spiritual high that enables one to feel close to God. How are we to understand such cravings? Is it part of a developmen t phase, or a culturally driven perversion of worship, or a biblical worship requirement for everyone, not just adolescents? This workshop will suggest that there are elements of truth in each of these three views, and will explore ways to strengthen espe cially the third of these views. 13414 Aaron Copland Celebration High School Choral Festival 11/10/1990 Copland, Aaron
For musicians throughout the world, Aaron Copland represents all that characterizes the United States. In his music he reflects the activity of urban life on the one hand and the vastness of open spaces on the other. His occasional use of folk songs with modal harmony, the melodic and rhythmic elements of jazz and populat music, the aggressive dissonance of a maching age are all the natural expressions of a lad from Brooklyn who has absorbed the life and music around him. -- Neil Butterworth

15070 Science on Sunday Hoezee, Scott 1/30/2009 In most churches, preachers and worship leaders generally avoid science in their sermons and liturgies. At most, preachers may spar with science, challenging its alleged re futations of the Bible and the faith and so leaving the impression that science is the enemy of the church. In this workshop Scott Hoezee will suggest that science can be an excellent partner for preachers in celebrating the gifts and wonders of God that come to us in the handiwork of God's good creation. The workshop will explore reasons science is a partner in ministry, not a threat to it, and how preachers and worship leaders can use science more positively in their teaching and preaching. 14502 Long Prayer, The: Offering Prayers in Public Worship Hoezee, Scott 1/25/2008 Some traditions call it "The Pastoral Prayer" while others label it "The Congregational Prayer" or "Morning Prayers" or "Prayers of the Pe ople." But as any eight-year-old could tell you, the most descriptive moniker may well be the child’s label for it: "The Long Prayer!" Whether pre-written, extemporaneous, or a combination, the prayer offered in worship on Sunday morn ing is probably the longest single prayer most people hear all week. As pastors and worship leaders, our public prayers reveal much about our habits of mind even as those prayers have a shaping influence on how the congregation prays all week. This worksh op will look at the place of prayer in public worship and will offer practical suggestions for offering prayers that are theologically imaginative and pastorally sensitive. 14138 What is Excellence in Preaching Hoezee, Scott 1/26/2007 What should preachers keep in mind in composing sermons? Toward what sermonic goals should they aspire? What evaluative categories can church members become aware of to dial ogue more meaningfully with their pastors (and with one another) about the preaching life of the church? This session will hold up the rubrics "Biblical, Authentic, Contextual, and Life-Changing" as goals for preachers and as helpful categories for congregations to use in discussing sermons. When pastors and church members come to a common understanding of what preaching should be, possibilities for helpful conversations begin across the life of the congregation, to the mutual benefit of all!
