16281 Gender, Culture, and Physicality: Paradoxes and Taboos Sterk,Helen; Knoppers, Annelies
On their new book. Grappling with gender-based paradoxes and questioning gendered taboos, two goals animate Gender, Culture, and Physicality: to reveal how gender continues to be enacted in ways that dehumanize women and men, and to stimulate thinking and action toward a fuller realization of human potential and partnership. Operating from an ethic of care, in which all people are understood as being created equal, Helen M. Sterk and Annelies Knoppers argue that as long as women and all that is associated with them are devalued, cultural practices will remain implicitly gendered and humanity itself, reduced.

11751 'Genetic' Predestination? Knoppers, Bartha 1/21/2004 Intimately linked, as it is to market forces and investment, the hype and hope surrounding genetic research focuses on the determining power of the gene. This spills over in to the information provided to patients and recipients and influences ethical frameworks and evaluation. Genetic determinism is shaping socio-ethnic policies and legislation around the world. But is that determining power omnipotent? Or are there other fa ctors and influences that need to be considered? Named Scientist of the Year in 1996 by Radio-Canada, Bartha Knoppers, a law professor and bioethicist at the University of Montreal, will discuss the trends, the models for policymaking and whether any mode l can be as epigenetic and dynamic as the human person. 14471 German Calvinism in Crisis: The Heidelberg Conflict Over Church Discipline 1568-1571 Gunnoe, Charles 11/15/2007 The "Second Reformation" of Reformed Protestantism in the Holy Roman Empire took a bold step forward with the Electoral Palatinate's publication of the Heidelberg Catechism in 1563. The productive collaboration among Calvinists, Zwinglians, and Melanchthonian Lutherans that the catechism represented proved short lived, however, as the Heidelberg intellectual community exploded in conflict over the question of churc h discipline and the church's relationship with a Christian sovereign. Ultimately a modified Calvinist conception of church discipline prevailed in the Palatinate, due both the persuasive abilities of the Heidelberg Calvinists and the fact that the " Anti-disciplinist" faction had become discredited when some of its leading members were revealed to be Antitrinitarians. 14410 Gestures, Movements, and the Preacher's Theatre (Session 2) Farley, Todd 10/11/2007 Gestures, Movements, and the Preacher's Theatre.
Have you ever heard a preacher who just cannot seem to tell a story right? Have you yourself ever tried to embellish a Bible story or speak in the voice of a biblical figure only to feel like it fell flat? This second session goes a step or two further than the first session as we focus on how the preacher might use more theatrical forms to enhance the sermon. The session will begin by looking at techniques used by preachers for creating significant space, portraying characters in scripture, re-telling scriptural narratives, and relating "stories" or "life narratives" in an engaging way.

16762 Gift of All: A Community of Givers, The DeVos, Richard; Fox, Thomas; Meijer, Frederik; Olson, Gordon; Walker, Margaret 1/1/2009 "The Gift of All: A Community of Givers" was undertaken to explore the reasons why, in 2004, the Chronicle of Philanthropy recognized Grand Rapids-Holland-Muskegon , Michigan as the nation's second-most generous region per capita in the U.S.
In this documentary, the history of giving and volunteerism in West Michigan is preserved in the words of those who helped to create its unique culture of philanthropy, so future generations can learn from those who have gone before them, and be inspited to become givers themselves.

16872 God, Chance, and Purpose Clark, Kelly
Before God and creation via evolution get too cozy, we need to remember that evolution is a chancy process. While natural selection itself is not a method of chance, what it selects from is a matter of chance—random mutations. Random mutations supply the fuel that operates the evolutionary machinery. Without mutations, individuals within a species would have exactly the same characteristics; none would be any better th an another in terms of avoiding predators or coaxing mates. It’s only when mutations occur—making some individuals slightly faster or able to smell better or more attractive—that natural selection kicks in, lending its endorsement to the favorable trait. Without mutations, natural selection is empty. But, and here’s the God and creation problem, mutations are random. How can a random process be compatible with God’s intentions to create plants and animals, and then humans (in His image)? If the process was random, how could God have known what he was going to get? How could God have guided a process that is fueled by random events? I'll consider five models for how God might use random processes to accomplish God's purposes.< /FONT>

14724 God, Israel, and the Future of the Nations in Biblical Perspective Wright, Chris 4/23/2008 The Bible challenges us with a robust affirmation that God is
sovereign over the stories of all nations in history. But it also
focuses on God's purpose for biblical Israel in particular. How are we to connect these two great themes? What do they tell us about God's mission and our part in it?

12696 God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It Wallis, Jim 5/5/2005 In the lecture, which followed the concepts of his most recent book, he asserted that moral values encompass actions and attitudes toward a host of issues, including povert y, the environment, criminal justice and war. Evangelical Christians are called to define "moral values" much more broadly than the current trend to look exclusively at wedge issues like abortion and gay marriage, and that religion will be, and should be a factor in American public and political life. Van Dyke Mission Lectures
16685 Gospel According to You: Using Your Story to Tell God’s Story, The Charles, Mark; Kang, Moses; Hoezee, Scott 1/27/2011 In a world that is Biblically illiterate and thinks it is far too “busy” to go to church, how can we open up for people the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and Jo hn? How can we show them the beauty of the Psalms of David, or expose them to the wisdom of the exhortations of Paul? How can we capture their attention long enough to wonder at the greatness of God? The answer is through our stories. Our own stories of G od’s faithfulness in our daily lives shared, against a backdrop of scripture, over a cup of coffee or from a pulpit or lectern provide some of the most vivid testimonies to God’s character that this ‘busy’ world will ever see. This seminar will examine the use of stories from different cultural contexts and expose the participants to a varied use of narrative in different teaching and preaching styles.

15196 Government Inspector, The Kelly, Kirsten 2/18/2009 Calvin College student and alumni performed an adaptation of Gogol's: The Government Inspector, a witty, imaginative and wildly satirical play which exposes societal corrupt ion with biting hilarity. Gogol's masterpiece created such a furor when it was first performed in 1836 that the playwright was driven into exile. Gogol's comic fantasy is a celebration of the grotesque and absurd elements in human nature and remains one of the great comedies of all time.
