11101 Faith & the Public Arena Goeglien, Tim 4/28/2003 While faith-based efforts have seemingly stalled in both Congress and the Senate, the White House remains committed to the basic idea that many of society's problems coul d benefit from the assistance of religious groups. And it vows to keep government assistance to faith-based organizations on the legislative table.
Tim Goeglein has worked in the public arena for nearly 15 years. For a decade, he was first the Deput y Press Secretary and then Communications Director for U.S. Senator Dan Coats of Indiana. An Indiana native, he began his career at WKJG-NBC in Fort Wayne, producing their evening newscasts. During the Bush-Cheney campaign, Goeglein served as the Coalitio ns Media Director. He graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington with honors from the Ernie Pyle School of Journalism.

180 Faith and Science Plantinga, Alvin 1/18/2000 While modern empirical science arose within the bosom of the Christian faith, the relationship between Christianity and science has been marked by as much conflict as concor d. At times, what is proposed as serious science seems to be flatly inconsistent with the Christian faith. This lecture looks into this type of conflict and Dr. Plantinga argues that typically these conflicts ought not to occasion fear and trepidation on the part of Christians. Dr. Plantinga is a founding member of the Society of Christian Philosophers. He taught philosophy at Calvin College for 19 years. In 1982, he was appointed to the John O'Brien Professor of Philosophy and Director for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame. Heritage Hall : Available for sale. 13557 Fall Preaching Conference 2005 Davis, David A. 10/13/2005 This day-long conference explored the
corporate nature of the preaching event. While
in most cases just one person stands to preach,
preaching still belongs to the whole church.
Preaching is to be understood as an ongoing
conversation. Preachers never have the first
word nor the last word. Though one person
speaks, the voice of the listener shares in the
construction of meaning.
As the preaching ev ent is placed within a more
complex understanding of communication,
conference participants will be invited to
ponder why preaching every week can make
preaching easier, the nature of the relationship
of preaching to the liturgy and sacrame nts, and
also the multiple dialogues that contribute to
the experience of any one sermon.
This conference explored some well-known topics
in preaching such as sermon form, the use of
illustration, the importance of language, and
narrativ e preaching. All these are considered
in the light of the voice of the listener.

#406 FAMILY-BASED YOUTH MINISTRY
What does every good church youth group need? Cool music? Zany games? Trendy young leaders? Could it be that the very things we use to dr aw young people to church youth groups keep them from joining a church when they get older? They haven’t learned a thing about how to be a part of the adult Christian community! Host Quentin Schultze explores this possibility with Mark DeVries, auth or of the book Family-Based Youth Ministry.

15107 Firm Foundation, A: Biblical Principles of Worship Man, Ron 1/30/2009 It is critical that churches base their worship practices upon unchanging, foundational principles from God's Word. We need a common understanding of what we dare not chan ge from church to church, culture to culture, century to century—even while we celebrate the rich diversity of expression which God delights in and which the New Testament allows for. Twelve principles were presented as a scriptural framework for th inking about, preaching and teaching on, and planning and leading corporate worship. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

13658 Forgotten Ones: Worship and Pastor Care Boers, Arthur Paul; DeVries, Robert; Newmann, Barbara; Smith, Kathy; Zonnebelt-Smeenge, Susan 1/27/2006 F4 Many people have a vision for pastoral care that takes place in homes, hospitals, and institutions, often in times of crisis. But the prime place for pastoral care is in the community gathered for worship, when all who are able gather under the care of the Good Shepherd, and those who cannot attend are still remembered and named. This session will explore ways worship leaders can encourage the whole community to model the kind of love and care that includes everyone, especially the least among us. 10744 Foster Care: Reunification or Adoption McFadden, Emily Jean; Diepstra, Stephene 10/15/2002 #308 FOSTER CARE: REUNIFICATION OR ADOPTION?
Some say children should be removed from a family only as a last resort, if their lives are in danger. And then every effort should be made to return them, even if it means spending a long time in foster care. Others say putting the child's needs first means getting them quickly into a new permanent home. Let's hear the arguments from two experts in the field of foster care: Em ily Jean McFadden, professor at the Grand Valley State University School of Social Work, and Stephene Diepstra of the Calvin College social work department.

14110 Four Pages of the Sermon, The Beelen, David; Choi, Peter; Hoezee, Scott; Truax, Laura; Voskuil, Karsten; Wilson, Paul Scott 1/25/2007 As preachers, do we preach the text or the gospel? The answer is both, but what is the difference? In the last fifty years preaching has become less informational and more c onversational, sensitive to language, metaphor, and art; it is more attentive to historical critical dimensions of biblical texts and to listener needs. For all of these strengths it is debatable whether preaching has become more faithful in proclaiming t he gospel. Biblical texts often do not contain the gospel and preachers typically assume that in preaching the text the gospel has been proclaimed. Together we will explore creative approaches that may be needed to ensure that the gospel is proclaimed, in cluding: honoring the form and movement of the gospel as a biblical genre in structuring sermons; locating the gospel in and with biblical texts; and treating proclamation as a particular form of preaching.

14096 Free of Charge: Giving and Forgiving in a Culture Stripped of Grace Volf, Miroslav 1/18/2007 Director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture and Henry B. Wright Professor of Theology at Yale Divinity School , Volf is one of the most respected living theologians. H e is author of dozens of scholarly articles and ten books including his most recent, " Free of Charge: Giving and Forgiving in a Culture Stripped of Grace" which was commissioned by Arch Bishop of Canterbury as the Official 2006 Lent Book. As a native of war-ravaged Croatia and son of a father who endured unspeakable torture at the hands of concentration camp guards, Dr. Volf understands more than many about the horrors of indiscriminate brutality. He also understands the unforgiving heart that can often result from living through such trauma. Despite his experiences, Dr. Volf has spent decades building a theological legacy of forgiveness, generosity, reconciliation and nonviolence. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale. 12517 Freeing God's Children: The Unlikely Alliance for Global Human Rights Hertzke, Allen 11/11/2004 Dr. Allen Hertzke, internationally recognized expert on religion and politics, as well as author, frequent news commentator and international lecturer, presented the 9th annual Paul B. Henry Lecture.
His recently published book by the same name provides a window into the changing religious landscape (in the United States and globally) as religious leaders focus attention on human rights concerns and form unlikely a lliances between religious organizations and other interest groups. Dr. Hertzke challenges the assumption that modernization in our world automatically leads to the secularization of society, asserting instead that in the face of global Christianity and r enewed activism, the role of faith in individuals' lives is leading in the opposite direction.

14264 Fundamentalist History, Secular Myth, and the Media’s God Problem Sharlet, Jeff 4/11/2007 Sharlet is a contributing editor for Harper's and Rolling Stone and an associate research scholar at New York University's Center for Religion and Media, where he teaches journalism and edits TheRevealer.org, a review of religion and the press.
His latest work is Jesus Plus Nothing: How American Fundamentalism's Power Elite Shaped the Faith of a Nation. He is also the co-author with Peter Manseau of Killing the Buddha : A Heretic's Bible, published in 2004 and named by Publishers Weekly as one of the top 10 religion titles of that year.
Sharlet’s talk at Calvin will make the case for "American fundamentalism" as a term that encompasses the politica l and cultural work of a broad evangelical movement that's both conservative and utopian, gentle in spirit and angry in expression, rooted as much in its reading of American history as in scripture.

11744 Future of Freedom, The Zakaria, Fareed 1/12/2004 To the popular mind - and most politicians - more democracy means more freedom. Not so, according to Fareed Zakaria, author of The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad, which is described as “one of the most important books on global political trends to appear in the past decade.” Widely respected for his ability to spot economic and political trends around the world, Zakaria will shed light on the complex interaction between economics and politics, on America’s role in the world - particularly pertinent with allied forces attempting to bring freedom to Iraq by imposing democratic standards, and on the way in which democracy is changing every aspect of our lives - from economics and technology to politics and culture.
