14553 Plenary #3: Ernso Jean Louis Louis, Ernso Jean 2/1/2008 My country Haiti has been, and still is, for as long as I can remember the poorest country in the western world. 65% of the population is born again Christian, yet nothing has changed in the day-to-day lives of the people. What can be done?
The answers lie in the hands of a new breed of missionaries, young men and women who are willing to go in those developing countries in order to show these people how to fish and n ot to give them a fish everyday like it has been in the past.
I want to encourage others to get involve in what several sociologists have called the 'Quiet Revolution', helping others to become sustainable.

14552 Plenary #2: Edward Cardoza Cardoza, Edward 2/1/2008 Building a movement for global health equity means tackling not just disease, but all the barriers to health. Skeptics warn this approach is too complicated, too expensive and unsustainable-but time and time again experience has shown that a comprehensive approach is the only way to fundamentally improve the health of patients and improve the quality of life in communities. Drawing from the experience of Partners In Health in Haiti and Rwanda, Ed Cardoza will present some elements which might prove essential ingredients in a long-term strategy for reversing generations of privation.

14551 Welcome and Opening Plenary Session: Ida Mutoigo Mutoigo, Ida 1/31/2008 What's all the buzz about sustainability in community development? This plenary session will explore Christian faith perspectives, essential principles and practices that n urture the fruit of sustainability. Stories from international field experience will show how community ownership, asset-based approach, worldview dialogue, leadership and community capacity-building can foster desired sustainable development.

Faith and International Development Conf. 2008
14555 Plenary #4: Luis Noda Noda, Luis 2/2/2008 The sustainability of development actions is a high desired goal from the beginning of any project or program. However, this is an element that does not come spontaneously u nless it is planned for and foreseen. But, what do we mean by sustainability? In my professional experience working in development projects and programs, sustainability has to do with the local context, institutional settings, ownership and participation of beneficiaries. Moreover, under a Christian perspective, sustainability has to do with personal beliefs, attitudes and actions (behavior change) that shape the final result of development efforts.

13555 Interview and Q & A with Rev. Davis Davis, David 10/13/2005 This day-long conference explored the
corporate nature of the preaching event. While
in most cases just one person stands to preach,
preaching still belongs to the whole church.
Preaching is to be understood as an ongoing
conversation. Preachers never have the first
word nor the last word. Though one person
speaks, the voice of the listener shares in the
construction of meaning.
As the preaching ev ent is placed within a more
complex understanding of communication,
conference participants will be invited to
ponder why preaching every week can make
preaching easier, the nature of the relationship
of preaching to the liturgy and sacrame nts, and
also the multiple dialogues that contribute to
the experience of any one sermon.
This conference explored some well-known topics
in preaching such as sermon form, the use of
illustration, the importance of language, and
narrativ e preaching. All these are considered
in the light of the voice of the listener.

14410 Gestures, Movements, and the Preacher's Theatre (Session 2) Farley, Todd 10/11/2007 Gestures, Movements, and the Preacher's Theatre.
Have you ever heard a preacher who just cannot seem to tell a story right? Have you yourself ever tried to embellish a Bible story or speak in the voice of a biblical figure only to feel like it fell flat? This second session goes a step or two further than the first session as we focus on how the preacher might use more theatrical forms to enhance the sermon. The session will begin by looking at techniques used by preachers for creating significant space, portraying characters in scripture, re-telling scriptural narratives, and relating "stories" or "life narratives" in an engaging way.

14409 Non-Verbal Toolbox of the Preacher, The (Session 1) Farley, Todd 10/11/2007 The Non-Verbal Toolbox of the Preacher
How does the look on your face affect how people hear what you are saying? Does your posture sometimes convey the opposite of what you are trying to say? This first session will focus on the preacher and his/her natural ability to communicate non-verbally. The lecture will increase each person's awareness of and potential for using authentic gestures, basic body posture, and ministry -appropriate communication techniques to enhance the presentation of the Word.

Pedulla, Albert 4/1/2005 Not only is there a theological rationale for Christians to engage in the arts and music, but there is a Biblical mandate. In this session Pedulla invites participants to co nsider the innate human need for symbols, stories and the arts by exploring a basic theology of the arts and how the scriptures show us that we need art not only to be whole, but to understand the fullness of God's character. 12614 Dancing About Architecture: Exploring the Connection Between Music and Words Whitman, Andy 4/2/2005 The musician Elvis Costello once stated, "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture: it’s a really stupid thing to want to do." Costello points out the inevitable conundrum faced by any music critic: how to communicate the ineffable, sublime qualities of music that cannot be fully articulated. The problem is only compounded when music deals with matters of the soul, our deepest longings, our most sacred and personal experiences and intimations of God. In this workshop, Paste Magazine music critic Andy Whitman explores the connection between music and words, and how to bridge the gap between the inexpressible and the printed page.
