17059 Science, Atheism, and People of Faith Ecklund, Elaine 12/5/2011 On Mon., Dec. 5, at 3:30 p.m., Dr. Elaine Howard Ecklund presented a lecture on "Science, Atheism and People of Faith: The Need for Dialogue" in the Commons Lectur e Hall. Dr. Ecklund is Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of Graduate Studies at Rice University in Houston, TX.This event was sponsored by the Christian Perspectives in Science Seminar Series and the department of sociology and social work.

Dr. Ecklund joined the Rice University sociology faculty in fall 2008, where she is also director of the Program on Religion and Public Life in the Social Sciences Research Institute and a Rice scholar at the Baker Institute for Public Policy. Explor ing mechanisms of institutional change draws together Ecklund's research. Specifically, she is interested in how individuals develop cognitive schema "ways of interpreting the world" that are at odds with institutions that constrain them. She th en examines how individuals use such frameworks to bring changes to these larger institutions. Her research addresses this theoretical topic in the areas of religion, immigration, science, and civic life.

Ecklund received a 2004 PhD in sociology fr om Cornell University. In the past seven years she has authored twenty-five academic articles, including those in the Annual Review of Sociology, American Behavioral Scientist, and Social Forces, and two books --Korean American Evangelicals New Models for Civic Life as well as Science Vs Religion: What Scientists Really Think, both with Oxford University Press. In addition she has authored op-eds and essays for USA Today, the Washington Post, and The Scientist, among other popular outlets. Ecklund's resea rch has received coverage in national and international media outlets including: USA Today, CNN.com, MSNBC.com, Times Higher Education, Chronicle of Higher Education, The Scientist, Nature and Xinhua News. Over the past five years Ecklund has completed th e largest study to date about what scientists at top research universities think about religion. In the course of her work she surveyed nearly 1700 scientists and sat in their offices and labs to interview 275 of them.
Ronald Numbers, Hilldale Profess or of the History of Science and Medicine at University of Wisconsin has this to say: “Since surveys of scientists' religious beliefs began nearly a century ago, no one has produced a study as deep and broad as Ecklund's. Surely Science vs. Religion will be the gold standard of such surveys for decades to come.

16647 Thrill of the Chaste, The: Finding Fulfilment While Keeping Your Clothes On Eden, Dawn 10/19/2010 Dawn Eden, author of The Thrill of the Chaste: Finding Fulfillment While Keeping Your Clothes On, believes that today's true rebels are those young adults who are striving f or a love that goes beyond sex. She discusses the difference between abstinence, which is purely physical, and a lifelong journey of learning to love every individual in the fullest possible way, whether a friend, a relative, a spouse, or a stranger.
D awn writes: "Before I discovered chastity, I believed I was supposed to make the most of my freedom to 'have sex like a man.' That meant divorcing my emotions from my sexual activity, so that I would feel a bond with my partner only if and when I wis hed. If I wasn’t enjoying this game, then, according to feminist wisdom, I was doing it wrong. Today I see that I was doing it right, and that’s precisely why I was unhappy."

16924 Real Solutions for Haiti's Future Edmund, Ralph 1/20/2012 Ralph Edmond grew up in the midst of three drugstores as the son of a Haitian pharmacist. After studying at the State School of Medicine and Pharmacy in Port-au-Prince, he a ccomplished a second degree in Business and Marketing Management at the Bernard Baruch College in New York City. Upon returning to Haiti in 1989, Ralph took a different step in the field of pharmaceuticals—a step toward the Haitian production toward the Haitian market. He and his business partner soon founded Laboratoires Farmatrix, which today employs over 65 people. After a decade of experience as an entrepreneur, Ralph attended a conference in Michigan on “Business as a Calling”, wher e he discovered his goal to bring mentoring and job creation to Haiti. Through the tool of mentoring, Ralph believes that business people and entrepreneurs can break the barriers of social and economic class. He will explain how “free” aid can hurt their economy and keep it from growing, how poverty and violence can be fought through investments and how common humanity can be shared through mentoring. He will also discuss how the Haitian Government, the NGO and the private sector can better in teract to move Haiti forward.

10696 How About Harry Potter? Ehlers, Marla; Liebenthal, Ed; Weaver, Karen
#104 HOW ABOUT HARRY POTTER? Most children need help choosing a diet that will make their bodies grow strong; do they need similar guidance in choosing food for their minds ? Although the commotion about the Harry Potter books has died down, the ethical questions remain about the responsibilities adults have regarding what children read. How can they guide children to make wise decisions? This week's episode of Inner Compass features Karen Weaver of Jenison Junior High, children's librarian Marla Ehlers, and parent/school board member Ed Liebenthal.

14654 Where Falsehoods Dissolve: Memory as Witness Eire, Carlos 4/18/2008 Memory may be an imperfect record of the past, but it is nonetheless the most immediate and reliable connection that every individual has to his or her own history. When it comes to great historical events—especially in cases where great injustices have taken place—personal memory can provide valuable testimony against all attempts to deny or distort the truth. Eire explores the advantages and perils of relying o n memory as eyewitness testimony against injustice. Festival Faith & Writing Ofc. : Available with permission.

13936 Making Choices: The Dutch Resistance During World War II Eman, Diet; Muller, John; Timmer, John; Witte, John 4/1/2005 The producer of this widescreen DVD explores the dramatic lives of four Dutch Americans of west Michigan who resisted the seemingly overwhelming power of the Nazis during th e occupation of the Netherlands (1940-1945). The documentary tells their stories of fear and courage, danger and faith, despair and trust in their Lord as they hid Jews and other fellow citizens on the run, and outwitted the Nazis. They candidly reveal wh at motivated them to risk everything to protect total strangers and the heavy price they paid for resisting Hitler and his henchmen. The story of one of the participants, Diet Eman, earlier was the subject of the book, 'Things We Couldn’t Say.' The others are John Muller, John Timmer and John Witte. Producer/Director Robert Prince, a Western Michigan native of Dutch origin, teaches journalism at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Running time 57 minutes.

A 38-year veteran of law enforcement, Rod Engle rt has consulted in more than 275 homicides in the U.S. and is a qualified court expert in homicide in 20 states. During this lecture, Englert, whose expertise is in crime scene reconstruction and blood spatter interpretation, will demonstrate a comprehen sive compilation of skills, techniques and technology which have been applied in actual cases he has been involved with. 14284 Developing an Incarnational Model of Scripture Enns, Peter 4/23/2007 Peter E. Enns, Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Hermeneutics at Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside, PA will lecture on "Developing An Incarnational Mod el For Scripture." Christianity is an historical faith, and its Scriptures beg to be understood in their historical contexts. The historical study of the Bible, however, can pose challenges for evangelicals since such study accents Scripture's " humanity." An incarnational approach to Scripture (one that affirms the necessity of Scripture's divine and human dimensions, as one affirms the human and divine dimensions of Christ) is a very helpful theological model for addressing the challenges posed by "Scripture in context." It is also a model that has ample precedent in Reformed thought, even if it has not been applied as rigorously as it could have been. This lecture will be held on Monday, April 23 at 3:30 pm in the Chapel Undercr oft. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.
