12614 Dancing About Architecture: Exploring the Connection Between Music and Words Whitman, Andy 4/2/2005 The musician Elvis Costello once stated, "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture: it’s a really stupid thing to want to do." Costello points out the inevitable conundrum faced by any music critic: how to communicate the ineffable, sublime qualities of music that cannot be fully articulated. The problem is only compounded when music deals with matters of the soul, our deepest longings, our most sacred and personal experiences and intimations of God. In this workshop, Paste Magazine music critic Andy Whitman explores the connection between music and words, and how to bridge the gap between the inexpressible and the printed page. 17825 De Generación en Generación Davis, Josh 1/26/2013 -This event was not recorded-

Translation: From one generation to another: The Bible teaches that the praise of God should be passed from one generation to another, but Latinos in the U.S. are encountering language and cultural barriers that are separating families. In this workshop, we will begin a conversation that confronts these barriers and looks for new, biblical, and creative ideas that, for God's glory, will break them among bilingual and bicultural families and congregations.

14205 De Ordine Creationis: A Theological Approach to the Nature of Mathematical Reasoning Turner, James 2/9/2007 In the history of ideas, our view of the world as structured mathematically can be traced back to the 17th century rationalists, particularly to Descartes and his reloca tion of certainty as grounded in the divine mind to certainty as grounded in the personal cogito. In this talk, we will speculate on what the nature of mathematical reasoning would be once the ground of certainty is returned to the divine mind. Here we will follow the thought of the two contemporary 13th century giants of theology: Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

14438 Death is Different: Investigating Legal Defense in Death Penalty Sentencing Henderson, Stephen 11/15/2007 Detroit Free Press columnist Stephen Henderson spoke about his investigation of death penalty sentences. The Supreme Court has ruled that under the Sixth Amendment, even con victed murderers have a right to a vigorous defense when a jury is deciding whether or not to execute them. In a four-year investigation, Henderson--former Supreme Court correspondent for McClatchy News Service, now columnist and deputy editorial page edi tor for the Detroit Free Press--found that in some states defense lawyers regularly fail their clients, leading to unjust death sentences. 182 Death: Enemy or Friend? Meilaender, Gilbert 1/20/2000 Since for humans to have life means to know that death is inevitable, learning how to die is a lesson we all must learn. In this endeavor our culture gives us conflicting si gnals about our dying. On the one hand, death is understood to be an enemy of our control over our fate, and is, therefore, an indignity; and on the other hand, death is understood as a natural part of life, a friend whose coming we should embrace. This p resentation deals with the tension between death as friend and death as foe from the perspectives of the narratives of dying patients, providing insights on learning to "die well." 14284 Developing an Incarnational Model of Scripture Enns, Peter 4/23/2007 Peter E. Enns, Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Hermeneutics at Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside, PA will lecture on "Developing An Incarnational Mod el For Scripture." Christianity is an historical faith, and its Scriptures beg to be understood in their historical contexts. The historical study of the Bible, however, can pose challenges for evangelicals since such study accents Scripture's " humanity." An incarnational approach to Scripture (one that affirms the necessity of Scripture's divine and human dimensions, as one affirms the human and divine dimensions of Christ) is a very helpful theological model for addressing the challenges posed by "Scripture in context." It is also a model that has ample precedent in Reformed thought, even if it has not been applied as rigorously as it could have been. This lecture will be held on Monday, April 23 at 3:30 pm in the Chapel Undercr oft. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

15036 Developing Pastoral Excellence Smith, Kathy; Wood, David J. 1/29/2009 How can excellence become a matter of habit, not just applied to particular practices and actions? Given the context of the pastoral life and ministry, what does the “ ;habit of excellence” look like and how is it cultivated? All too often when excellence in pastoral ministry is discussed, the emphasis is upon a range of individual, even isolated, spiritual practices and the quality of ministerial performance s uch practices make possible. In this seminar, by way of contrast, the practice of friendship will be a focal point for exploring the habit of excellence in pastoral ministry. We’ll also explore how pastoral excellence can be reflected in worship l eadership. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

10792 Dietrich Bonhoeffer On Lying - Reflections on America Hauerwas, Stanley 1/15/2003 Described as "contemporary theology’s foremost intellectual provocateur," Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at the Divinity S chool of Duke University, has been named America’s Best Theologian by Time Magazine. The intent of his work is to show in what way theological convictions make no sense unless they are actually embodied in our lives. Referring to the work of Dietric h Bonhoeffer, who wrote that “it is worse for a liar to tell the truth than for a lover of truth to lie, Hauerwas will reflect on Bonhoeffer’s view of America and truth. This presentation is an attempt to prove that what Christians owe any pol itics in which they find themselves is first and foremost to be a people who want not only to hear the truth but to speak it. 17401 Digital Humanities: What It Is and Why It Matters, The Gloege, Tim 4/4/2012 The nexus of humanities scholarship and digital technology, the "Digital Humanities," has been alternately hailed as a scholarly revolution and denigrated a s a passing fad. But what is the Digital Humanities, really? And why should anyone care about it?
This presentation will sketch a brief history and suggest some ways that its practitioners are quietly changing the humanities. The Digital Humanities i s not a traditional academic field. It is a community of scholars and technologists who share three overlapping interests: to understand the digital (in itself, and how it affects humanity), to better use the digital (in research and teaching), and to ext end the digital (by creating better tools, new resources, and new modes of inquiry).

13554 Discovering the Voice of the Listener Davis, David 10/13/2005 This day-long conference explored the
corporate nature of the preaching event. While
in most cases just one person stands to preach,
preaching still belongs to the whole church.
Preaching is to be understood as an ongoing
conversation. Preachers never have the first
word nor the last word. Though one person
speaks, the voice of the listener shares in the
construction of meaning.
As the preaching ev ent is placed within a more
complex understanding of communication,
conference participants will be invited to
ponder why preaching every week can make
preaching easier, the nature of the relationship
of preaching to the liturgy and sacrame nts, and
also the multiple dialogues that contribute to
the experience of any one sermon.
This conference explored some well-known topics
in preaching such as sermon form, the use of
illustration, the importance of language, and
narrativ e preaching. All these are considered
in the light of the voice of the listener.

16875 Discussion of: 'Assessing Evidences for the Evolution of a Human Cognitive Platform for 'Soulish Behaviors' Stearley, Ralph 3/17/2010 Discussion of article by Ralph Stearley.
During the past one hundred fifty years, a great number of fossil hominid specimens have been unearthed, providing an outline of hominid history extending back five million years. Associated with these hominid fossils are artifacts. Christians and others who have attempted to assess the humanity of these long-dead individuals have focused on evidences of cognition such as cave art , evidences of care given to injured or ill individuals, or burial. However, many more types of evidences as to cognitive abilities in these creatures are available. Warren Brown has proposed that a cluster of interlinked cognitive capacities were elabora ted over the past few million years of hominid history during an "evolutionary trajectory" which, in turn, undergird human "soulish behaviors." These include language, a theory of mind, episodic memory, top-down agency, future orientat ion, and emotional modulation. This article is an attempt to put traction on Brown's proposal, through detailed examination of the paleoanthropological record. The ability to teach, and thus symbolically and rapidly transmit culture, is suggested as an ad ditional capacity which is part of this cognitive platform. Primary data (anatomy, artifacts) and reliable inferences (based on comparative studies) support a notion of a stage-wise erection of a cognitive platform for soulish behaviors. A few significant , less-understood gaps remain in the cognitive trajectory.

Calvin College January Series guest William Garvelink, until recently the overseer of USAID's worldwide humanitarian assistance programs, tells host Shirley Hoogstra what happens. He also describes his current work as U.S. ambassador to Democratic Republic of the Congo.

IC1205
The practice of labeling people by sexual orientation—homosexual, heterosexual, etc.—started only a century ago. At times labels can help make sense of our world, but at other times labeling individuals can be dehumanizing and can even be a form of injustice. Our sexuality need not define us, argues Jenell Williams Paris, anthropology professor at Messiah College and author of The End of Sexual Identity : Why Sex is Too Important to Define Who We Are. Shirley Hoogstra hosts.

16007 Don't Believe Everything That You Breathe: The Importance of Being Skeptical Dark, David 9/21/2009 Within a culture enthralled by "the con," those myriad forms of
confidence-selling, calls to worship that cry "INSERT SOUL HERE" at every turn, David Dark commends the sacred practice of redemptive skepticism. Exploring the ways fake urgency often trumps real urgency and promises of pseudo-intimacy often crowd out the possibility of real relationships, Dark considers the ways religious traditions and popular culture offer resources for questioning the status quo and reorienting ourselves.

17163 Double Faces of Ambition, The Shaw, Luci; Walker, Jeanne Murray 4/19/2012 Donald Hall once claimed, "If I have any ambition, it is for my work, not for myself." A noble sentiment--and yet without ambition, it is difficult to persist at a ny task in life through the inevitable hurdles and discouragement into a place of real excellence. But ambition can also easily turn into wanting and needing external praise and attention. Two friends and writers discuss these two faces of ambition. None : Not Recorded.

14114 Drama in Worship: Telling the Story Barker, Jeff; Boogaart, Thomas A; Polman, Bert; and Northwestern College's national touring theatre company 1/25/2007 This interactive seminar will focus on the use of biblically-based drama in worship. The morning sessions will address the dramatic structure and performance of Psalms and o ffer ideas for performing Old Testament stories verbatim. "Sioux Center Sudan" will be presented after lunch; this one-hour play is an exemplary interweaving of music and true story, which will spark our discussion of how theatre can be an integ ral part of worship. Seminar participants may choose from two breakout topics in the later afternoon: (a) dramatic use of Psalms in Old and New Testament narratives, or (b) dramatic use of story within worship and as guide to shaping an entire service. Drawing on three streams of recent work: the writings of N. T. Wright, the Faith Fo rmation Committee of the Christian Reformed Church, and recent work in Reformed-Roman Catholic dialogue. This seminar will focus on three key themes: How can we most faithfully and fruitfully picture what the sacraments are about? How can we more faithful ly understand the role (and potential role) of the sacraments in faith formation for people of all ages?
