Healthy Congregations is a seminar designed by Peter Steinke, author of the books How Your Church Family Works: Understan ding Congregations as Emotional Systems and Healthy Congregations: A Systems Approach. A key concept at the heart of Healthy Congregations is “self-differentiation,” people's capacity to calmly articulate what they think and value, and to act on that basis, while staying in active relationship with those who disagree. This seminar is beneficial for both clergy and lay leaders.

13555 Interview and Q & A with Rev. Davis Davis, David 10/13/2005 This day-long conference explored the
corporate nature of the preaching event. While
in most cases just one person stands to preach,
preaching still belongs to the whole church.
Preaching is to be understood as an ongoing
conversation. Preachers never have the first
word nor the last word. Though one person
speaks, the voice of the listener shares in the
construction of meaning.
As the preaching ev ent is placed within a more
complex understanding of communication,
conference participants will be invited to
ponder why preaching every week can make
preaching easier, the nature of the relationship
of preaching to the liturgy and sacrame nts, and
also the multiple dialogues that contribute to
the experience of any one sermon.
This conference explored some well-known topics
in preaching such as sermon form, the use of
illustration, the importance of language, and
narrativ e preaching. All these are considered
in the light of the voice of the listener.

14131 Poetry of Astonishmen, The: Preaching the Psalms Davis, Ellen 1/26/2007 We will use the Psalms as a case study for considering what it means for the preacher, first, and then the congregation, to be astonished by the biblical text. Is astonishme nt a faithful response to the text, and to God? How might this ancient poetry be surprising, and therefore revelatory, to those who hear it in our contemporary contexts? What sort of preparation is necessary for the preacher who wishes to engage the Psalm s as poetry?

10725 Worship Styles: A Matter of Taste? Dawn, Marva; Witvliet, John
#211 WORSHIP STYLES: A MATTER OF TASTE? When churches are torn about whether to update their worship services or stick to tradition, too many decide to literally tear into two services. But does this create more problems than it solves? Theologian and author Marva Dawn and John Witvliet of the Calvin Institute for Christian Worship recommend ways around this harmful solution.

14490 Christ's Priesthood and Our Praises Dawson, Gerrit Scott 1/25/2008 Hebrews tells us that even now Jesus is our leitourgos, the true worship leader in every service. Christ continues in his office of High Priest. By the Holy Spirit, he stand s in our midst and reveals his Father to us. Christ also offers us in worship to his Father. While Jesus is our High Priest, we too are given a crucial role. We have been made "priests to his God and Father" (Rev. 1:6). The church gathers the wo rld into its worship. We give voice to the hearts of men and women everywhere. But more: we exercise the unique human gift of speech on behalf of all creation. We give words of praise to the inarticulate worship of sea and rock, tree and bird, molecules a nd stars. This workshop will explore the implications for liturgy and preaching which arrive from recognizing afresh 1) the reality of Christ’s priesthood and 2) that we are, in George Herbert’s phrase, "Secretaries of thy praise." 10794 Whatever Happened to Geographic Literacy? de Blij, H.J. 1/16/2003 International competitions, tests and polls prove that Americans are among the most geographically illiterate citizens in the world. Indeed, the U.S.A. is the only country o f consequence in which it is possible to go from kindergarten through graduate school without ever having taking a course in geography. As a result, political leaders have embarrassed themselves and their country in foreign settings; members of the govern ment have misled the country in disastrous foreign-policy campaigns. Additionally, an inadequately educated public is in no position to make its views count. H.J. deBlij, a world-renown geography scholar and former geography editor for Good Morning Americ a, will address why geographic illiteracy can have catastrophic consequences and what could and should be done about it. 11538 Cold War with China? de Blij, Harm
#415 Geographer and author Harm de Blij compares the Soviet Union Cold War with our relationship with China today. Americans seem unaware of the potential consequences of th e growing number of misunderstandings we keep having with this country. The key, he tells host Karen Saupe, is for Americans to learn more about China.

#315 GEOGRAPHIC ILLITERACY
Is geography anything more than an elementary school topic you had to endure? What harm is there if you don't know exactly where Korea or Afgha nistan is? Geographer, author, professor, and TV personality Harm de Blij explains the implications of living in a country whose government leaders, news reporters, and average citizens cannot find Iraq on a map.

11748 China in the World Ahead: Avoiding Cold War II De Blij, Harm 1/16/2004 Among the great events that will mark the 21st century - climate change, civilization conflict, medical miracles, technological triumphs - the rise of China as a global forc e is likely to figure prominently. This will happen at a time when the United States is the world’s sole superpower; conflicts of interest will be inevitable. In fact, they already exist. Harm de Blij, a world-renowned geography scholar, television personality and Distinguished Professor of Geography at Michigan State University, returns to the January Series to discuss the possibility of a Second Cold War, which may vex this new century as the First Cold War bedeviled the last, and what can be done to avert this threat. 14534 Whose Art? Which Church? De Boer, Lisa 1/25/2008 Those of us who work at the intersection of the visual arts and congregational life know from experience how rich, complex, rewarding, and often messy this area can be. Theo logical, historical and philosophical factors all come into play. This session, however, will look at some of the sociological factors that shape how the visual arts and our churches intersect. The aim of the session is twofold: 1) greater clarity for tho se of us working “on the ground” about some of the sociological factors that shape our work, and 2) a deepened appreciation for the freedom and opportunity (as opposed to the obstacles) we enjoy in working in this area.
