17772 Sermon on the Mount, The Bailey, Kenneth E.; Pohl, Christine 1/24/2013 Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount contains some of the most famous verses in Scripture. Even people without a Bible have heard of the golden rule, the Lord’s Prayer, an d, possibly, the Beatitudes. Even libertines quote one verse from the Sermon: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” But the Sermon on the Mount yields its greatest riches when good scholars and teachers dig them up for us and help us esti mate their value. Kenneth E. Bailey and Christine Pohl are excellent diggers and their seminar will help participants to understand themes from the Sermon and to consider their power and beauty for preaching, teaching, and life in Christian community. 17080 Putting Rare Books Within Everyone's Reach: Historical Theology and the Post-Reformation Digital Library Ballor, Jordan; Rester, Todd 2/17/2011 Over just the past few years digital research tools have made significant changes to the discipline of historical theology, making many more primary sources easily accessibl e to scholars. Texts that used to be held only by a few libraries are now available in electronic form, but are widely scattered and not easily located on the web. The Post-Reformation Digital Library (PRDL) is a project intended to address the challenges of digital research in the humanities and early modern theology by providing a single-portal access to thousands of digitized rare books. This vast online resource gives scholars immediate access to works by major and minor reformers and theologians from the medieval period through the eighteenth century. The presentation, led by Jordan Ballor and Todd Rester representing Professor Richard Muller's team at Calvin Theological Seminary, explores the origins of PRDL, its present status, and its possible fut ures in the rapidly-changing world of humanities and theology research in the digital age.

11746 After Billy Graham: The Future of American Protestantism Balmer, Randall 1/14/2004 As Protestants embark on the 21st century, they no longer enjoy the dominance they once held in North America. Changes to immigration laws have gradually altered the religio us landscape of the United States, but Protestantism in America faces internal crises as well, notably an appalling lack of leadership such as was provided for more than half a century by Billy Graham. Randall Balmer, the Ann Whitney Olin Professor of Ame rican Religion at Columbia University and senior writer for Christianity Today, has published widely and speaks frequently on religion in America. His lecture speculates on what lies ahead in a religious world without Billy Graham, a world where Baptists no longer behave like Baptists. 175 Exploring the Fourth Dimension on the Internet: It's Not Just Time Anymore Banchoff, Thomas 1/11/2000 For more than a century, the Fourth Dimension has fascinated mathematicians and scientists, as well as writers, artists and philosophers, ranging from Edwin Abbott's Flatlan d to the surrealism of Salvador Dali. Dr. Banchoff is a pioneer in the geometry of the Fourth and higher dimensions. If you don't know what the Fourth Dimension is, come to this lecture to find out. You will "see" phenomena in the Fourth Dimensi on through computer graphics and animation and how, through internet technology, people can interact with these images. This presentation is enhanced with slides, videotape and the internet. Dr. Banchoff is Professor of Mathematics at Brown University and President of the American Mathematical Association. The morning sessions will address the dramatic structure and performance of Psalms and o ffer ideas for performing Old Testament stories verbatim. "Sioux Center Sudan" will be presented after lunch; this one-hour play is an exemplary interweaving of music and true story, which will spark our discussion of how theatre can be an integ ral part of worship. Seminar participants may choose from two breakout topics in the later afternoon: (a) dramatic use of Psalms in Old and New Testament narratives, or (b) dramatic use of story within worship and as guide to shaping an entire service. 11899 Preacher as Minor Poet, The Barnes, Craig 1/30/2004 T.S. Eliot once claimed that every culture needs its minor as well as major poets. The major poets write the eternal sonnets that echo through the centuries. The minor poet inculcates those words to particular people in specific contexts. The preacher's calling is thus to serve as a minor poet who speaks the inherited Word into the despair and heartache, or the beauty and miracle, that lie just beneath the thin veneer of the ordinary. 17171 Writing for the Elder Brother Barnes, M. Craig 4/20/2012 Reaching out to the prodigals with the forgiving grace of the Father is deeply ingrained in the American understanding of the Gospel. But many of the people who worship and who read Christian literature have not made a mess of their lives. Like the elder brother, they are careful and good at following the rules. Their sins are boring and tedious. So how do we address the Gospel to these elder brothers? Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

17200 Pastor as Minor Poet Barnes, M. Craig 4/20/2012 In the human experience, mystery and miracle, as well as despair and heartache, are found beneath the thin veneer of what only appears to be ordinary. So the subtext of huma n lives is usually where the Holy Spirit prefers to work. This makes it critical for pastors and people of faith to develop the poet's skill of exploring the truth behind reality. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

What's the difference between a book for children and a book for adults? Why do celebrities write terrible children's books? Why do children love the books they do? What do history and memory have to do with writing books for children? What's the one prerequisite if you want to write a children's book? And why do writers for children have so much fun? 14478 Abundant Life Around the Table Bass, Dorothy; Briehl, Susan; Haugan, Marty 1/24/2008 A meal stands at the center of Christian worship, a meal that remembers the past, nourishes us for living in the present, and draws us into God’s future, a banquet of justice and joy. How might breaking bread at the Lord’s Table form among us daily "table practices" that nourish the body and soul, seek the well-being of all people, honor and heal creation, and reveal God’s presence in the world? I n this workshop we will open the rich treasury of symbol, gesture, word and song present in three particular movements in the Sunday liturgy of Word and Sacrament-gathering gifts, giving thanks, and sending forth. Together we will sing songs and tell stor ies of God’s gift of abundant life around the Table. Come prepared to "taste and see" the goodness of God. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

14110 Four Pages of the Sermon, The Beelen, David; Choi, Peter; Hoezee, Scott; Truax, Laura; Voskuil, Karsten; Wilson, Paul Scott 1/25/2007 As preachers, do we preach the text or the gospel? The answer is both, but what is the difference? In the last fifty years preaching has become less informational and more c onversational, sensitive to language, metaphor, and art; it is more attentive to historical critical dimensions of biblical texts and to listener needs. For all of these strengths it is debatable whether preaching has become more faithful in proclaiming t he gospel. Biblical texts often do not contain the gospel and preachers typically assume that in preaching the text the gospel has been proclaimed. Together we will explore creative approaches that may be needed to ensure that the gospel is proclaimed, in cluding: honoring the form and movement of the gospel as a biblical genre in structuring sermons; locating the gospel in and with biblical texts; and treating proclamation as a particular form of preaching. 11743 Music, Emotion, and Worship: Is There Anything to Fear? Begbie, Jeremy 1/9/2004 In today’s culture, more than ever before, music is used to move us emotionally - on TV and in movies, shopping malls and restaurants. From the ancient Greeks to the r ecent Taliban regime, many have feared this profound power of music. In the Christian Church the anxiety has often been intense, especially in worship where music plays such a prominent role, and where some suspect they are being manipulated. Using perfor mance, slides and recorded music, Jeremy Begbie, noted author, professor and associate director of the Institute for Theology, Imagination and the Arts at St. Mary’s College of St. Andrews University in Scotland, asks, “In worship, what, if an ything, have we to fear from music’s emotional power?” Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research January Series, 2004

Why do so many people turn to music for "spiritual" refreshment, using music from New Age to trip-hop to medieval chant? This presen tation explores some of the ways in which music works in our lives and offers reasons why music so often brings people closer to God. Slides, recorded music and demonstrations at the piano assist in answering the question of what music has to do with God. 17027 Strange Silence of Songs of Justice in Contemporary Biblical Worship, The Bell, John L. 1/27/2012 The word justice is never far hidden in the vocabulary of the psalmists. Over half the psalms specifically use the word. But in worship today, particularly in the Western ch urch, the word is suspect and politicised. In this workshop we look at how the global church does not share the reservations of the West, and also use examples of psalm settings which celebrate this necessary theme in our praise. 17004 Pastoral Resources of the Psalms, The Bell, John; Brink, Emily 1/26/2012 For many traditions, the Psalms are primarily one of the sine qua nons of Sunday worship, whether sung metrically like hymns in the Reformed tradition, or slotted between th e Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament reading as in Roman Catholic and Episcopal traditions. But to harness their use solely or primarily for liturgical purposes is almost to deny their origin as songs which spoke to God from particular experiences of del ight, triumph, loss, depression or a hundred other emotions. Drawing on the breadth of expression in the Psalms, we will identify how in private pastoral encounters as in public worship arenas the psalms spoken or sung can minister to our deepest needs an d potentials Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

And who knew that in Europe a similar approach would rejuvenate singing the Psalms? We will examine worship as a resource for pastoral care in the congregation, and ask how we can be deliberate in our undersanding of and use of worship as a healing, shaping power.

14392 Christians in the Courtroom Bloom, Stephen
#820 CHRISTIANS IN THE COURTOOM Originally broadcast May 18, 2008
Witnesses place their hand on the Bible before they testify: how would principles from that Bible play out if it were actually opened up and applied? Would prosecutors be arguing for forgiveness? Stephen Bloom, attorney with Irwin & McKnight law firm in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and author of The Believer's Guide to Legal Issues, wonders with host Karen Saupe how empty courtrooms might become.

It is illegal to steal from your workplace; yet across the nation, employers are stealing from their employees every day. 13658 Forgotten Ones: Worship and Pastor Care Boers, Arthur Paul; DeVries, Robert; Newmann, Barbara; Smith, Kathy; Zonnebelt-Smeenge, Susan 1/27/2006 F4 Many people have a vision for pastoral care that takes place in homes, hospitals, and institutions, often in times of crisis. But the prime place for pastoral care is in the community gathered for worship, when all who are able gather under the care of the Good Shepherd, and those who cannot attend are still remembered and named. This session will explore ways worship leaders can encourage the whole community to model the kind of love and care that includes everyone, especially the least among us. 13657 Preaching in a Postmodern Culture Bolsinger, Tod; Hoezee, Scott; Hulst, Mary; Long, Thomas; Quicke, Michael 1/27/2006 F3 Christ is the same “yesterday, today, and tomorrow." The biblical Word likewise remains the fixed foundation on which to preach Christ and his gospel. But alth ough the content of Scripture changes not, the context in which that Word is preached shifts dramatically era to era. In today's postmodern context, the acoustics are different—familiar doctrines reverberate differently in the postmodern ear. So ho w can sermons speak into this cultural moment? How can pastors speak into this context without compromising the Bible's content? This panel will reflect on such questions so as to provide practical suggestions aimed at encouraging preachers in their vital task. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale.

He served as pastor, theologian, founder of the Free University in Amsterdam, chief organizer o f a Calvinist political party, prime minister of the Netherlands. He is, however, less well-known for another major contribution—his writings on worship and liturgy which are still relevant for the church today and will appear in an English translat ion as Our Worship (Eerdmans, forthcoming). The psalms give voice to both the praise and lament of all God’s children. In this session we will look at ways to assist people with intellectual disabilities to enter into the psalms and make them their own, using a multisensory method of music, drama, and visual ideas. This study of Psalms has a broad use within the Christian community. None : Not Recorded.

#121 URBAN DESIGN, SUBURBAN SPRAWL
Ever heard people talking negatively about "suburban sprawl"? What's wrong with the American dream of a large yard, large hou se, large garage? City planners around the country believe it's time to turn back to neighborhood life of the past. The New Urbanism movement is described by Robert Goodill of the Urban Design Studio of Torti-Gallas CHK and Jonathan Bradford of Inner City Christian Federation.

15076 Worship that Renews the Me and Transforms the Us Bradford, Jonathan; Dekker, James and Rose 1/30/2009 Christians are to be hearers and doers of the word. We pursue meaningful worship, meanwhile the business of worship is often measured by the number of coffee bars and size o f parking lots. But what about urban schools graduating illiterate teenagers? Or prisons bursting at their seams? Or untold millions dying from war, hunger, or disease? Worship must heal these wounds. Drawing from their diverse ministry experience Jim an d Rose Dekker (Latin American ecumenical and spiritual direction) and Jonathan Bradford (US urban) will explore the biblical concepts of knowing Christ the servant and serving Christ the Sovereign Lord. All of life must really be worship. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

How would you like your job to be a continual popularity contest? 14041 What is a Number? Augustine’s Philosophy of Mathematics Bradley, James 11/3/2006 In De Libero Arbitrio, Augustine of Hippo presents an argument for the existence of God. Because the argument depends in an essential way on mathematics, Augustine expa nds at some length on its nature. This talk will examine the implications of his views for the four classical questions of the philosophy of mathematics: In what sense are mathematical assertions true? What is the nature of mathematical objects, for exam ple, numbers? Since such objects seem immaterial but we are material beings, how do we acquire knowledge of them? How do we account for the astonishing effectiveness of mathematics in describing the physical world? Also, Augustine’s views on math ematics have implications for many other questions. If there is time, this talk will address two in particular: How are we to understand God’s freedom? And how are we to understand the nature of logic? 17197 Telling the Truth? Braestrup, Kate 4/20/2012 Memoirs purport to be reasonable representations of real life as it has been lived by real people. But storytellers who attempt to capture even a fragment of reality will fi nd themselves hampered by the essential discontinuity between life and words. Out of facts, inventions, and silence, storytellers--including memoirists--must create a new reality. So is there really any such thing as a true story? Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

"Between Nature and Nationality: The Hague Sc hool in the Nineteenth Century," presented in the Center Art Gallery at Calvin College from October 5 - November 17.
In the 1870's, a group of Dutch artists began to gather and work alongside each other in and around The Hague. The earliest memb ers of the group included Jozef Israëls, Jacob Maris, Anton Mauve and H. W. Mesdag, and collectively they and their colleagues came to be identified with the city. The 'Hague School' label was appropriate since the surrounding landscape and shoreline , together with the rural population who worked the fields and sea, provided the subjects for most of the pictures produced by these artists over the final few decades of the nineteenth century.

However, there is a growing interest in initiatives, where the citizens vote directly for various laws. But if we can't even choose politicians we like, is the average citizen really equipped to decide on laws with far-reaching consequences ? What does scripture mean wh en it speaks of beauty? How does this affect our engagement with the arts in worship? Part of our challenge in congregations is that everyone comes to worship with such a different understanding of what is beautiful and how much it really matters. The hearing as well as the preaching of God's Word should comfort, challenge , correct, inspire, and deepen the faith and life of God's people. Much time is spent in preparing to preach well, but too often the proclamation of Scripture is among the least prepared and least engaging parts of public worship. This day will explore wa ys of presenting Scripture with excellence and imagination, including reading (and coaching of readers) and reciting, in dramatic forms, and in combining song and speech

16586 U.S. Slavery in the North Browne, Katrina
Brown, Juanita

When Katrina Browne was 28 years old and in seminary, she learned that her ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. And, they were not from the South ; they had lived in Rhode Island. Katrina wrote to 200 family members, inviting them to explore their family's past. The result: an award-winning documentary, Traces of the Trade, made with co-producer Juanita Brown, who helped plan a journey to Africa fo r the group and facilitate painful conversations about their discoveries. How can the preacher stay true to the original language and setting of these psalms while also making them feel fresh in the twenty-first century? In this seminar Walter Brueg gemann will set the tone in helping preachers ponder the nature of the psalms and in understanding the ways in which these psalms are the vocabulary of human need, articulating the full range of human experience before God as we live in this world. The se minar will feature extended conversations conducted by Marc Nelesen and Kevin Adams as they dialogue with renowned biblical scholar Walter Brueggemann. 14283 Night with Sietze Buning, A Buning, Sietze 4/13/2007 The regular Wiersma lecture at Calvin College will take on a slightly different format for 2007 as several of Wiersma's former friends and collegues present an evening of re adings from his best work.

Wiersma was a former Calvin College English professor and prolific author who penned often autobiographical writings under the nom de plume Sietze Buning.

Thus on April 13, at 7:30 pm in the Chapel at Calvin Theolo gical Seminary there will be "An Evening with Sietze Buning," what is being billed as a free evening of entertainment and enlightenment.

A colorful cast of dramatic readers will present the best of Buning's "Purpaleanie" and &qu ot;Style and Class." The event will be followed by a social hour with refreshments and it is sponsored by the Wiersma Literary Endowment.
Read a well-known Buning poem »

Wiersma, who was known for his poetry, and for his encouragement of young Christian authors, died suddenly in 1986 while on sabbatical in the Netherlands. The Wiersma Literary Endowment was established by Wiersma family and friends in 1988 to encourage Christians in the reading, writing and publication of excellent lit erature.

Friends of Wiersma say the endowment was set up not only to honor him, but also to perpetuate the kind of conversations he would have enjoyed.

14147 Worship with the Least of These Burger, Steve; Cornelison, Joan; Schuringa, David; Smith, Kathy 1/26/2007 Jesus described our actions toward 'the least of those brothers and sisters of mine' (Matt. 25:40) as ministering to Jesus himself. He even said when he returns in his glor y, the way we have dealt with those in need will have eternal significance. Many churches have developed important ministries, but how are those ministries connected to communal worship? This panel discussion offers ideas and resources so that the whole c ommunity in worship can better minister to our children, those who are disabled, and those brothers and sisters who are not present with us because they are in prison. Some people seem to think the initials "LD" stand for "lazy & dumb." Others say there is no such thing as a lazy c hild when it comes to learning. But there are plenty of students who try to hide their disabilities. Phil Stegink of the Christian Learning Center and Debra Buursma of the Calvin education dept. tell host Shirley Hoogstra how children are mislabeled and m isunderstood, the calling of educators, and what the federal role should be.

15040 They Weren't People of the Book: Finding Jesus' Oral Culture in a Post-literate World Buursma, Randy; Dewey, Dennis 1/29/2009 In this age that many call post-literate, it's helpful for us to remember that Jesus never wrote a book. The storyteller who is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith learne d what we call "scripture" (writing) as sound and breath. Because digital culture is secondarily oral, we have much to learn from those who thought of themselves more as "people of the story" than as "people of the book." Thi s workshop will challenge fundamental assumptions about the Bible and the biases of the high-literate academy in studying scripture as a document. The seminar will explore techniques for getting the text off the page, into the heart and out of the mouth.< /FONT> None : Not Recorded.
