Resources: Guidance Counselors

Visit Calvin!

By attending our in-depth “Fridays at Calvin” visit program, counselors can experience Calvin from a student perspective.  Options for the day include attending chapel, visiting classes, meeting with faculty, and learning about diversity, athletics, and financial aid.

When are Fridays at Calvin for Guidance Counselor visits offered?

Counselors can choose one of the following dates—February 29, 2008, March 28, 2008 or April 11, 2008.  The program begins at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude at 3:00 p.m., but we welcome the opportunity to share dinner at a local restaurant with counselors the evening prior to the program.

What does a visit entail and what are the expectations of the Guidance Counselor?

The guidance counselor must attend the Fridays at Calvin program at least through the campus tour and coffee time (finishing at 3:00pm) to qualify for reimbursement. The guidance counselor is expected to provide the Admissions Office with his/her local contact information.  If a guidance counselor is flying in for the visit, s/he will be invited to attend dinner at a local restaurant with her/his Admissions Counselor the Thursday evening prior to the Fridays at Calvin program.

What Guidance Counselor costs qualify for reimbursement?

Lodging: Arrangements will be made for Guidance Counselors to stay in the Prince Conference Center or the Comfort Inn. Up to two nights of lodging will be provided, depending on travel needs.  Double occupancy will be used when appropriate.

Meals: Lunch will be provided at the Fridays at Calvin program. Meal tickets will be given for the remaining meals that you will be on campus. We invite you to share dinner at a local restaurant the Thursday evening prior to the program.

Travel Expenses:

  • Airfare: Guidance Counselors will be reimbursed by the College for the cost of their plane ticket.  To receive this reimbursement, the Guidance Counselor must turn in a copy of all travelers’ flight receipts in one packet immediately after the trip. Reimbursement must be requested prior to the purchase of airline tickets. (Contact Sarah Plantinga.)
  • Gas mileage: If a Guidance Counselor is within driving distance of the campus, Calvin will reimburse you for gas mileage based on the current Calvin mileage rate. Reimbursement will take place in situations where this arrangement was settled with Sarah Plantinga prior to the visit.
