Choosing A College: College Visit Checklist

Dorm Room ScenePlan your college visits in advance to make sure that you get a good overview of the college and have all your questions answered. Before you visit the campus, consider some of the options below. It is also important to develop a list of questions and request specific activities in order to accomplish your goals.

  • Meet with an admissions counselor
  • Take a campus tour
  • Investigate your academic program(s)
  • Stay overnight in a residence hall
  • Eat in the student dining facilities
  • Find out how to apply
  • Verify admission requirements
  • Determine actual college costs
  • Ask about financial aid opportunities
  • Obtain a school catalog and calendar
  • Meet with faculty in the department of your intended major
  • Discuss your chances for success in certain programs
  • Ask about the placement record for graduates in the field you might study
  • Attend a class to get an idea of the typical size, teaching style, and academic atmosphere
  • Talk with students about the general academic environment and the amount and kind of study necessary for success
  • Identify career services for undergraduates
  • Find out what student activities (clubs, organizations, intramurals, etc.) are available and about social atmosphere and activities
  • Investigate transportation options
