The purpose of this course is to prepare elementary pre-service educators to teach and integrate art and music in the elementary classroom. Each area will be studied in relation to how expressive elements convey meaning to people of various time periods and cultures. Students will also develop an understanding of the arts as unique disciplines and powerful tools for learning in other subject areas through the creation of interdisciplinary and integrated units of instruction. Classroom activities and assignments will include creating, performing, and responding through art and music; readings, discussion, lesson planning, peer teaching, reflective writing, and research.
