Law is one of the oldest and most honorable of the professions. Twenty-four of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence were lawyers. Thirty-eight of the fifty-five delegates to the Constitutional Convention were lawyers. Lawyers have done much to shape the institutions of our free society. As our society changes and becomes more complex, demands upon the legal profession increase. The profession needs people who understand not only the workings of our present society, but also the historical and philosophical development of the Western civilization and its institutions. It needs people with high ethical standards, people capable of empathy for other people, and people who, without being naive, can sustain their ideals of justice and equality for all.
