One of the greatest freedoms which the United States and other democracies guarantee their citizens is the freedom of the press. By protecting the citizens’ “right to know,” a state guards their other freedoms as well. The press can even be seen as a fourth branch of government, investigating and interpreting the actions of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The changes in our political and cultural life which journalists have charted have given rise to a whole new complex of journalistic media. We have had an “information explosion” in which the internet vies with newspapers and other media for our attention. Communications has become a massive industry, but at its center should be the ideal of truth—highly principled people who seek the truth and aim to protect it.
