Interdisciplinary Studies
Weaving your talents and goals into a program that works for you

Students on campus

Writer and theologian Frederick Buechner calls vocation "the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." At Calvin we take seriously the exploration of vocation—a calling that does not always fall within the bounds of a certain major. Interdisciplinary Studies allows students to choose their own courses and pursue a field of study that will enable them to better serve in God's kingdom.

Forming Your Major: The Process

1. Choose your courses

Sometime after your first year, work with your advisor to choose a minimum of 12 courses from 3 different departments or disciplines. In addition to these "major" courses, you will also take classes from Calvin's Core Curriculum.

2. Write a proposal

In a written proposal indicate how your chosen disciplines and courses work together to form a coherent field of study. Explain how this major will enhance your learning or prepare you for a specific vocation.

3. Get it approved

In consultation with the Registrar, you will need to get approval from the department chairpersons from each of the larger disciplines represented in your major. Official proposal forms are available at the Office of Academic Services.
