“Next to God’s Word, history is…the richest foundation of wisdom, and the surest guide.” These words by the noted historian Philip Schaff capture the sensibility that the Calvin College History Department tries to cultivate in the classroom. They mean that, at Calvin, history is not a dry recital of names and dates but an investigation of how things in human society work, and how they tend to work out. They mean that we take delight in exploring times and peoples very different from ourselves — yet quite familiar when we get to know them...

  • Calvin graduates can be found around the world, from elementary schools to research universities. Recent graduates are currently doing doctoral work at universities across the country, from Yale and Vanderbilt to Chicago and Iowa to Southern California and UC Davis.
