German
Crossing the Language Barrier Into a Fascinating Culture

Calvin student

Twentieth-century Germany is an enormously interesting country. It has been devastated by two world wars and has lived under five different forms of government. Although no longer divided by the infamous Wall separating East from West, Germany remains a country of fast-paced change, diversity, and contradiction. On the one hand, German history has been enriched by gifted writers and musicians; however, it also has produced the Holocaust and a repressive East German communist state. Because of this contradiction, study of the German language, literature, and culture is particularly fascinating and rewarding. We invite you to explore with us both Germany’s past and the changes taking place in the country in our own time.
