Alan and Genevieve Gebben Family Scholarship

Alan and Genevieve Gebben are Calvin graduates who have invested their professional careers in teaching. After graduating in 1954, Al earned a master of arts in teaching degree from Vanderbilt University in 1955 and his PhD degree in botany from University of Michigan in 1965. Motivated by love for his discipline and his appreciation for Calvin, he taught in the Calvin Biology Department for 35 years, where he specialized in "skin out" biology, the relationship of plants to other plants and the environment. He also chose to teach field botany at AuSable Institute of Environmental Studies for several summers. Recognizing the many stewardship applications that run through his discipline, Al has worked with local conservancy organizations to promote preservation and natural biological communities. In retirement, he spent several winters volunteering at E.C.H.O. (Education Concerns for Hunger Organization) in North Fort Myers, FL. Genevieve, also a Calvin graduate (1970), taught in the upper elementary grades for over 20 years in Grand Rapids Christian schools. The Gebbens have four children, all Calvin Alumni: Laurie, David, Paul and Lisa. The family's appreciation for Calvin runs deep, and they are eager to make that education available for others. This scholarship promotes the study of environmental biology and the development of a knowledge base for the wise stewardship of creation resources.

William John Heule Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established to remember and honor the life of William John "Billy" Heule, beloved son, brother, grandson, and friend of many, whose life was cut short by a tragic car accident when he was only twenty. Billy was an avid bass fisherman. He loved to take his small aluminum boat--barely big enough for one person, three poles and four large tackle boxes--to the lake to catch this elusive fish. In 2001, upon graduating from high school, Billy joined a mission trip to Haiti. There, in a small overcrowded church in the most destitute part of Port-Au-Prince, Billy experienced the presence of God in a powerful way and understood his calling in life. He focused his studies on international business. While in Haiti, he also met the love of his life, Alysha McFadden, a Canadian native who had been working in an orphanage there for nine months. Despite full-time college, work, and making plans to get married, Billy continued to be drawn to the water and he would sneak out whenever possible to try a new lure or a new reel. Despite so many changes in his life, his passion for bass fishing never left him. His family would like this scholarship to support a Calvin student who shares Billy's love for bass fishing and the protection of in-land waters.

John and Louise Wagner/Vander Wagen Memorial Scholarship

John Vander Wagen was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI. He graduated from high school during the Great Depression and with no employment opportunities in Grand Rapids, he moved to Zuni, NM to join the Andrew and Effa Vander Wagen family. John had two cousins, Bernie and Richard, who opened the Vander Wagen Trading Post in Zuni and he worked with them in operations and bookkeeping. He became attached to the southwest and to the Zuni and Navajo tribes. However, he realized he was called to a different occupation, so he enrolled in college in the late 30's and earned his Doctor of Optometry degree in the early 40's. John opened his first practice in Loveland, CO and later bought an optometry practice in Canon City, CO. The seller convinced him it would be a "good business move" to shorten his name to Wagner, so he did. The business flourished. Once established in Canon City, John met and married Louise, and for over three decades they worked together in the practice of optometry. In the late 80's, John and Louise retired and moved to West Pueblo, CO, where they died in the 1990's. John valued education. The Wagner/Vander Wagen scholarship is intended to help Calvin students who have interest in the professions of optometry and ophthalmology.

Steven M. Zifferblatt Memorial Scholarship

Mr. Steven Michael Zifferblatt was a man who accomplished much in his lifetime. He climbed mountains, traveled to many foreign lands, received the accolades of many, and was considered by his peers as a scientist at the top of his profession. Yet throughout his life, he remained a humble man who always tried to help people live long and well, no matter what their station in life. He wanted to be remembered as a man who cared about people and one who helped people. Steven's spiritual struggles the last five years of his life made him a new and better person. He taught people how to live well and how to die at peace and with dignity. Christianity was truly a gift of faith that sustained him to the end. This scholarship combines health and spirituality, the two key elements of life, since the body should be viewed as the temple of the Holy Spirit. We must live in and with the Spirit.
