Exploring the Building Blocks of Creation

Student in the lab

The simple things in life often get taken for granted. Fresh, clean water, medicines, plastics... all made possible in part by chemistry. Chemists explore the old—learning about compounds and elements that have existed since the dawn of time. They also explore the new—putting their knowledge of the basics to practical uses, like the development of a new drug, a new method of pollution control, or an environmentally friendly pesticide.

The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department of Calvin College teaches students how to apply the principles of Christian stewardship to chemistry. It helps prepare students to become chemists or biochemists dedicated to making the world a better place to live—whether the student works inside or outside the lab.
