Explore urban studies at Calvin

An interdisciplinary minor, urban studies focuses on urban issues and locates them within a Christian worldview.

Program requirementes

The minor includes six courses:

Choose one of the following tracks, according to your interests:

Track 1: Urban Social Development

  • Philosophy 207
  • History 356
Track 2: The Built Environment
  • Architecture 202
  • Environmental Studies 210
  • Geography 310
Track 3: Urban Policy
  • Political Science 208
  • Political Science 202
  • Economics 330 or Social Work 360

Choose two of the following electives to complete the minor:

  • Communications Arts and Sciences 303
  • Economics 330
  • Environmental Studies 210
  • Geography 310, 351
  • History 356, 357
  • Philosophy 207

Additional information

The following courses may apply to the urban studies minor if approved by the urban studies minor committee:

  • One interim course
  • Special topics courses
  • Independent studies
  • Up to six credits for internships and off-campus programs (e.g. the Chicago Semester)
