The Elsa Cortina Scholarship Program

To celebrate twenty-five years of SIS and to honor Dr. Cortina, we are establishing the Elsa Cortina Scholarship to enable future students to study in Spain. In fact, since all Spanish majors are now required to spend at least a semester studying abroad, this scholarship is more relevant than ever.

From the first classes she taught in 1966, Dr. Cortina dedicated herself wholeheartedly to Calvin. In her more than thirty years in the Spanish Department, Dr. Cortina taught nearly 200 classes and had an impact on the lives of over 3,000 students.

Our goal is to raise at least $70,000 over a three-year period. Each year, this would enable two students to receive scholarships of $2,000 each, offsetting some of the extra cost involved in studying in Spain.
  • Four alumni giving $1000 a year for three years would add $12,000 to this goal.
  • Ten alumni giving $500 a year for three years would add $15,000 toward this goal.
  • 60 alumni giving as little as $100 per year for three years would give us $18,000!
Close your eyes and transport yourself to sunny Spain. Now envision today’s students experiencing the excitement and adventure of studying there. Then please join us in honoring Dr. Elsa Cortina with this scholarship in her name.
