El Camino de Santiago “El Camino de Santiago” is a unit for first-year Spanish students based on the famous pilgrimage route across northern Spain leading to Santiago de Compostela.  Activities encourage students to read and research information about the route, to plan a trip and discuss what they will bring along, to write about what happens on their imaginary trip, and to make a travel brochure.  The students end by talking about reasons why people make the pilgrimage and about connections between culture and religion.  Included are listening and communicative activities.  This unit was created by Michele De Young and Kara Kuipers for Prof. David Smith’s foreign language methodology class at Calvin College (Grand Rapids, MI).
