Teaching Units: Lupita "Lupita" is a first-year Spanish unit on the story of an Ecuadorian woman who now lives in New York City. Through photos, Power Point presentations, music, and audio clips, students learn about and interact with the story of this amazing woman. The vocabulary emphasis is on family relationships. Students reflect on the immigration stories of their ancestors and on the strength of the family, and they are encouraged to write a letter to Lupita in response.

As a follow-up to the unit, you can tell the students that Lupita is still living in New York, where she works to support and give money to her family. The twins are growing up in their grandparents' home in Ecuador.

This unit was created by Ashley Wallace and Kate Landau for Prof. David Smith's foreign language methodology class at Calvin College (Grand Rapids, MI).
