This unit on immigration is intended for second-year Spanish students. Students are asked to write a journal each day to reflect on the material that has been presented and to examine their attitudes toward immigrants. The unit uses a poem by Gina Valdés, the movie El Norte, and various activities including a Family Immigration Activity to lead the students to discussion and reflection. Meredith Riemersma created this unit for Prof. David Smith’s foreign language methodology class at Calvin College (Grand Rapids, MI).
