This unit for second-year Spanish students looks at the complex issue of human rights, with special emphasis on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, who asserted her right to study as a woman. Students are encouraged to converse about human rights, to design a poster, and, following Sor Juana's example, to write a letter insisting on a right. The unit ends with another lesson from Sor Juana and an activity showing that things may not be as they seem. This unit was written by David Bolt and Katie Kempker for Prof. David Smith's foreign language pedagogy class at Calvin College ( Grand Rapids , MI ).
