Activities
On-Campus
Spanish House
Living in the Spanish House is a great opportunity for students to use
Spanish outside the classroom.
Spanish Table
The Spanish table meets regularly for dinner in the Commons Dining Hall.
The Spanish House members form the core of this activity, but all other
students interested in practicing their Spanish conversational skills
and meeting new Spanish-speaking friends are encouraged to attend. Look
for the sign "LA MESA."
Spanish Chapel
Spanish students and professors come together to praise the Lord in Spanish
each Thursday from 10:00 to 10:20 am in the Meeter Center Lecture Hall.
Enlace
Enlace, the departmental newsletter for students, is e-mailed to
students every week during the semester. Be sure to read this newsletter
for information on up-coming events and opportunities.
Off-Campus
Service learning
The Service-Learning Center is the hub for student and faculty service
in the community. Many opportunities for serving in Grand Rapid's Hispanic
community are available, such as tutoring for Homework House or the Hispanic
Institute. Call ext. 6-6456 for more information.
Community events and resources
The census of 2000 indicated that since 1990 the Hispanic population of
Kent County (Michigan) has tripled, to 40, 583, including 25, 818 within
Grand Rapids and another 8,400 in Wyoming and Kentwood. These figures
translate into large numbers of stores and restaurants that serve Hispanics,
Spanish-speaking churches, local Spanish language periodicals and radio
programs, downtown festivals to celebrate el dieciséis de septiembre and el cinco de mayo, and much more. |
