Curriculum Vitae

Originally from Texas, Professor Tatum joined the Calvin College faculty in fall, 2003. Tatum earned a B.A. in sociology and a J.D. from Texas Tech University. He practiced law for eight years in Roswell, N.M. and became a partner in the firm of Atwood & Malone, P.A. He is completing his doctoral studies at the University of Virginia, where he was a fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture.

Prof. Tatum is interested in the problems of law and social change. He has presented or published a number of studies on the ethical, legal, economic and political dimensions of the "right to die" and assisted suicide debates in the United States. His dissertation research explores the ways in which biomedical ethics ideas are transformed in trials, appellate cases, and efforts to pass legislation on the federal and state levels.

Prof. Tatum teaches Sociological Principles and Perspectives; Sociology of Deviance; and Criminal Justice System. He has also taught a special topics course on Law and Society, and interim courses on Sociology of the Body ("The Body and Being Human").
